IRINA'S SHIP : exterior

Irina's ship is initially detected by Paris and Kim when they are away from Voyager on a test-flight of the newly-reconstructed Delta Flyer. She challenges the Starfleet vessel to a race. Her ship can scan another ship to ascertain how fast the opponent might be. Her sensors can also emit a modulating pulse, a facility which is used later by Kim to alert Paris about Irina's rigged energy converter, by producing morse code patterns by making changes to the pulse's amplitude. | ![]() Irina's ship races the Delta Flyer during the latter's test-flight. |

The design of Irina's ship, together with the impulse system which she designed and built by her, makes the ship more maneuverable through an asteroid field, although the recently modified impulse thrusters of the Delta Flyer have the advantage. Irina's ship runs on rich deuteriuum fueld and does not require a fuel converter to meet the eligibillity requirements of the Rally, although an overload (which she deliberately induces) in the starboard nacelle's power transformer leads to the interior cabin filling with nyocene gas - an emergency which requires that she be rescued by her Starfleet opponents.
Irina's ship has compatible systems with Starfleet technology, including similar EPS (electroplasma) power relays and impulse manifold systems. This suggests that her race's technology is at the same level of advancement as Starfleet's. The vessel's interior has at least two levels, and it is spacious enough to easily accommodate the two-member crew, the pilot and co-pilot, at the front of the ship's bridge. Paris notes that while the impulse drive is a "real beauty" the warp system seems rudimentary, but this reflects Irina's preference for a ship that is fun to fly.
| The ship is constructed from a series of interlocking smooth copper-coloured metallic panels. Much of the engineering is concentrated on the impulse engines. While the ship can survive direct shield to shield contact with other competitors during the race (an illegal maneuver), constant collisions will ultimately overload the shield generator. Irina tries to use this excuse to explain the damage her ship sustains during the early stages of the Rally. She blames fellow-competitor Assan, a plausible choice due to his aggressive flying, for the injury caused to her co-pilot Joxom, but Tuvok's investigation reveal a phase inverter, later found to have been deliberately interfaced by Irina to the ship's shield generator in order to cause the overload to his console. In hindsight it provides evidence of Irina's sabotage and indicates her willingness not to worry about causing injury as she tries to ruin the Rally and thus undermine the region's peace treaty. | ![]() Antarian ambassador O'Zaal examines a phase inverter, designed to cause a system overload, found by Tuvok interfaced to the shield generator of Irina's ship. |
