"Hi, I'm Harry 'read me like a book' Kim." Kim to Torres: [#56 Alter Ego]

GENERAL

[#62 Favorite Son]
Harry Kim was born in 2349, only son of his parents, John and Mary (they are named in the end credits of [#166 Author, Author]. His parents had been trying to have a baby for years until he came along - they called him their miracle-child [#62 Favorite Son]. He was born in South Carolina but grew up elsewhere [#93 One].

[#23 Parturition]
Although Kim has a talent for music (clarinet), his parents are tone-deaf [#62 Favorite Son]. As a young man he played clarinet in the Juillard Youth Symphony Orchestra [#1 and #2 Caretaker].

Kim later also took up the saxophone, [#158 Lineage]

When Kim was six his parents took him round a haunted house. It gave him bad memories, brought back when he was later (stardate unknown) in [#136 Collective] required to walk through a Borg cube seeking its shield generator.

[#62 Favorite Son]
When he was a child he had a bout of Mendakan pox. In 2373, after unknowingly contracting a gene-altering retrovirus planted by the Taresians, he dreamt about that time.
[#62 Favorite Son]

When he was 9 years old he and his parents visited a colony on a humanitarian mission. The colony had suffered a radiation disaster, and he had a traumatic experience when he accidentally wandered into a hospital operating theatre and saw a small girl on the operating table [#39 The Thaw].

Kim has a cousin, Dennis Kim, and they corresponded together. Kim received a letter from him via a Starfleet datastream in 2377 [#150 Repression] in which Soroyan, a friend of Kim's killed by the Maquis, was mentioned.

At Starfleet Academy Kim was the editor of the Academy newspaper for a year [#36 Investigations]. During that time he said he "monitored subspace transmissions, I got reports on some of the first activity by the Maquis against the Cardassians. I wrote an editorial about it and the students became polarised on the issue - debated the pros and cons and gained an insight into the entire history of the rebellion." Kim did not tell his Professor he was doing this: "It's the job of a journalist to be independent."

Ensign Lindsay Ballard, in 2376.
She did not have red hair before 2376.

[#138 Ashes to Ashes]
While at the Academy he became best friends with Lindsay Ballard, later Ensign. She considers him "obsessive". Kim thinks of himself as "tidy", but he used to request baryon sweeps of his dorm room at Starfleet Academy. He developed romantic feelings for her but she remained unaware of them until 2376 when she returned from the dead and stayed for a short time on Voyager [#138 Ashes to Ashes].

Kim's feelings for Ballard which grew during the Academy years and his engagement for Libby at that time (he was engaged when he first boarded Voyager) seem to contradict each other and no explanation is given in the relevant tv episodes. Suggested excuse: Kim was engaged to Libby and truly thought he was in love with her. But memories of Libby faded during his time in the Delta Quadrant, while Ballard was his best friend and close at hand. Kim's feelings for Libby must have gone by the time of his affair with Derran Tal in 2375, shown in [#111 The Disease]. Kim's finding Ballard again after she died, thanks to the Kobali re-animation process, made him realise it was Ballard he was in love with.

Until stranded in the Delta Quadrant Kim always contacted his parents once a week.

Kim graduated from Starfleet Academy on stardate 47918 and was posted to USS Voyager shortly thereafter as Operations officer [#22 Non Sequitur]. He almost blotted his copybook before even arriving on Voyager while at Quark's Bar on Deep Space 9 when Quark, the Ferengi bar owner, tried to sell him some Lobi Crystals. When Kim declined and replied, "We were warned about Ferengi at the Academy," Quark acted very affronted and threatened to report him. This made Kim try to placate Quark by offering to buy all the Lobi Crystals, but Tom Paris' intervention and implication that the Crystals were worthless, gave Kim a reprieve. Kim ignored Paris' past, which involved lying to cover up an action that had led to three deaths, and he and Paris became close friends.

Libby
[#22 Non Sequitur]
At the time of his posting to USS Voyager, Kim was engaged to Libby.

In an alternative reality experienced sometime in 2372 Kim discovered that he had not been posted to Voyager, was working in Starfleet designing starships and was living with Libby his fiancée in an apartment in San Francisco. He managed to return to his correct reality with the help of the alternate Tom Paris.

Kim drinks Vulcan mocha coffee, extra sweet [#22 Non Sequitur].

Kim assumes command of the entire ship, and sits in the captain's chair, whenever his superiors are absent or unavailable. He first does this in 2373, in [Future's End]. When he decides to beam back Janeway and Chakotay from villain Henry Starling's office, she congratulates Kim on his timing: "Not bad for your first day in the big chair." As a matter of routine, Kim commands the night shift, as seen in, say, [Warhead]. In [Author, Author], during his first live conversation with his parents since Voyager became stranded in the Delta Quadrant, his mother says that in his letters he says the captain puts him "in charge sometimes". Kim replies that what he meant was he is in charge of the night shift twice a week. click for audio clip from the episode

Kim's security level clearance is level 3 or higher, because in [#22 Non Sequitur] the LCARS computer in Kim's office at Starfleet Engineering Corps, San Francisco, Earth, states that access to classified files on USS Voyager requires security clearance level 3 or above, and he says to himself: "No problem. It's my ship, or at least I thought it was." He inputs a clearance code and the computer accepts it. He cannot have a security clearance higher than level 9 because Chakotay, who is senior to him, does not [#120 and #121 Equinox].

Kim's post is on the bridge, at Ops which is an abbreviation for Operations. The operations manager, also referred to as an operations officer, is the Bridge officer responsible for the co-ordination of the various departmental functions aboard the Federation starship or facility. In most Starfleet bridge designs, Ops is one of the major freestanding or partially built-in consoles located close by the captain and directly accessible to the commanding officer. (In Deep Space 9, a space station in the Alpha Quadrant, Ops is the abbreviation for the Operations centre which is the equivalent of the bridge.)

Kim's quarters, which are on Deck 3 [#56 Alter Ego], but on Deck 6 in [Waking Moments] where his room's door number is 105-2. As a bridge officer with the rank of Ensign he does not share his quarters unlike, say, Ensign Vorik. Paris is a frequent visitor to his friend Harry's quarters.
