[HOPE AND FEAR] : BEHIND-THE-SCENES
Prelude to shooting the episode |

Additional commentary by production staff is in this colour.
Scans by Janet.
On 27th February 1998 shooting is delayed because [One] is still being filmed, and five of the actors required for [Hope and Fear] are still working. As per Guild regulations, as filming of [One] went on until almost midnight the previous evening, each member of the crew, from grips to actors, is guaranteed 11 hours off following his or her "wrap" time.
The call sheet (see it below) is a daily document and is regarded as "the bible" for the cast and crew.

The call sheet for 27th February.
At the top of the call sheet for today is something that pertains to Rick Kolbe, the Director:
STAGE WALK--DAUNTLESS BRIDGE-- 1/2 hour before crew call--Epi. 194.
This will give him 25 minutes to discuss the new set (still under construction, of course) with his key department heads. At precisely 11.55 a.m., after the walk-through on Stage 16, the Cinematographer, Key Grip and Gaffer, in a quick recess from filming [One], along with the Unit Production Manager, rush back to Stage 8, where filming on [One] will continue. Rick Kolbe and First Assistant Director Adele Simmons return to the production office to consider their schedule. Unit Production Manager Brad Yacobian has made a "guesstimate" of Rick Kolbe's start time of 3.30 p.m.
A production's call sheet lists a day's start times - the time individual cast and crew members are expected to arrive at their first destination of the day, whether the make-up trailer or the stage or the production office. It also lists any required props, film equipment, stunt people, etc., that are not normally present. Importantly, it lists the specific scene numbers that are scheduled for the day's work.
The second half of today's call sheet belongs to [Hope and Fear]. The scenes listed are not in numerical order. This is because, for practical reasons, filming does not not start at the beginning of the script and work through in the story order. Typically, scenes are shot out of continuity, or out of sequence, to take advantage of an actor's availability or the use of a certain stage. There are fourteen scenes from [Hope and Fear] listed, drawn from six distinctly disconnected sections of the script. Beginning with Scenes 50, 12, and 13 allows actresses Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew to be released early, which will make it possible to bring them in early the next morning when they are needed for different scenes. Other regular cast members will be kept later for their scenes tonight, and they will be brought in later tomorrow. The eleven scenes without Kate Mulgrew and Jeri Ryan (Scenes 72, 79, 83, 85, 87, 100, 102 from Act Five; Scene 57 from Act Three; and Scenes 32, 33, and 37 from Act Two) have been grouped together because they all take place on Voyager's bridge. Time dictates such groupings as moving an entire film crew off one set only to move it back to the same set later would be foolishly time-consuming. It is Adele Simmons' job to help the production company avoid such foolishness - generating each day's call sheet is one of the main functions of the assistant directors. Adele Simmons: "Our focus is on maintaining everything going on with the actors, the set, any changes, and where we are with a scene."
The "changes" she refers to are variances from one apparently similar scene to the next, and tracking them is very important when you shoot a number of scenes featuring the same characters on the same set out of sequence. Remember that missing combadge in Scene 96? Adele Simmons does, and will make sure that its absence is noted on the call sheet for that scene. Similarly, she will note whether a character's hair should be mussed, or a graphic altered on a bridge monitor. The call sheet designates Scenes 100 and 102 as the tenth and eleventh scenes in the shoot. If the planned schedule holds, and [Hope and Fear] begins shooting at 3:30 p.m., Scenes 100 and 102 should be in front of the camera by 9:00 p.m.
[One] wraps at 4.30 p.m. The filming equipment is moved from Stage 8 to Voyager's cargo bay set on Stage 9. The film-makers take thirty minutes to devour an Italian dinner delivered to the set, and then they start shooting [Hope and Fear] at 6:30 p.m, three hours behind Brad Yacobian's estimate.
