Geordi La Forge was born in 2335 ([TNG: Cause And Effect]), born blind because of a birth defect. He comes from a family of Starfleet officers. His mother, Silva La Forge, was captain of the U.S.S. Hera NCC-620006 at the time of her death in 2370 ([TNG: Interface]). His father, Dr Edward M. La Forge, was an exozoologist. Geordi recalled that, even though he moved around a great deal, he considered his childhood a great adventure ([TNG: Imaginary Friend]). He spent time with his father, studying invertebrates in the Modean system. He also lived with his mother on an outpost near the Romulan Neutral Zone.

Geordi was caught in a fire when he was five years old. He was rescued by his parents, and was not injured. Geordi recalled how for a time after the incident it was extremely important for him to know where his parents were at all times ([TNG: Hero Worship]). He had a pet Circassian cat when he was eight ([TNG: Violations]). Possibly because his parents travelled so much when he was a child, Geordi had something of a knack for languages, one of these being Hahliian ([TNG: Aquiel]).

Geordi received the device called a VISOR (acronym for Visual Instrument and Sensory Organ Replacement)Note: VISOR after his fifth birthday [TNG: Hero Worship]. The device permitted him to see with greater clarity than other humans could.

Geordi has a sister, named Ariana ([TNG: Force Of Nature]). Nothing is known about her except that she once carried around a piece of tuna in her blouse for two months in an attempt to train her cat.

Geordi attended Zefram Cochrane High School. Geordi later, in 2063 (having travelled back in time from 2373; see below) gave this information to the famous space pioneer Zefram Cochrane, after whom the school was named. Geordi attended the school from 2349 to 2353.

He entered Starfleet Academy in 2353 ([TNG: Cause And Effect]). He graduated from Starfleet Academy in 2357 ([TNG: Conundrum]). Geordi first met his future starship captain, Jean-Luc Picard, when he piloted Picard's shuttle on an inspection tour. During the tour, Picard made an offhand remark about a minor inefficiency in the shuttlecraft's engines, and La Forge subsequently stayed up all night to repair the problem. Picard was so impressed that he requested Geordi be assigned to his command, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D (hereinafter called "the USS Enterprise-D" or "the Enterprise-D") in 2364 ([TNG: The Next Phase]). Before going to the Enterprise-D, however, Geordi served as an Ensign on the USS Victory under the command of Captain Zimbata ([TNG: Identity Crisis] [TNG: Elementary, Dear Data]).

Geordi was transferred to the USS Enterprise-D as Flight Controller (Conn) in 2364 ([TNG: Encounter at Farpoint]). He was promoted to full Lieutenant and assigned as the ship's Chief Engineer the following year, in 2365, just before stardate 42073.1 ([TNG: The Child]).

In 2364, Geordi participated in a rescue mission to a crippled Talarian freighter, making use of a device called a Visual Acuity Transmitter. This small device permitted the short-range transmission of visual images recorded by Geordi's VISOR. But the unit failed after a short time because the complexity of the signal exceeded the unit's ability to handle it. The image displayed by the Visual Acuity Transmitter contained an enormous amount of information, but was difficult for an untrained human to view ([TNG: Heart of Glory]).

Geordi was promoted to Lieutenant Commander in early 2366 ([TNG: Evolution]).

Although a brilliant starship engineer, Geordi was nervous around women to whom he was romantically attracted, and he found difficulty building relationships with them. He enjoyed a brief relationship with Lieutenant Aquiel Uhnari in 2369, seen in [TNG: Aquiel].

Perhaps as a result of his difficulty with women, Geordi developed an attachment to a holographic representation of Leah Brahms, the designer of the Enterprise-D ([TNG: Booby Trap]). Later the real Dr Brahms learned about this, and was outraged to learn of the simulation. She noted that creating such a replica without her permission was an invasion of privacy. Brahms did eventually become friends with La Forge, although Geordi was disappointed to learn that she was already married ([TNG: Galaxy's Child]).
