Hikaru Sulu was born in 2237, in San Francisco on Earth [Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home]. (The name "Hikaru" was authorised by Gene Roddenberry in 1979 but not used until [Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country].)
After graduating from Starfleet Academy, in 2265, he was posted to USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as a physicist [TOS: Where No Man Has Gone Before] [TOS: The Deadly Years]. He was transferred to the helm by the time of [TOS: The Corbomite Maneuver]. picture: youthful Sulu picture: USS Enterprise NCC-1701 bridge with Sulu at the helm
Sulu's hobbies were various and he tended to become specially interested in one particular interest for a period of time before something else took his main interest. His wide range of hobbies included botany [TOS: The Mantrap], fencing [TOS: The Naked Time] and old-style handguns [TOS: Shore Leave]. His shipmates included Yeoman Janice Rand. picture: youthful Rand picture: (Charlie X and) youthful Rand Sulu had a daughter, called Demora, who was born in 2271 [Star Trek VII: Generations].
In 2290 Sulu became captain of the USS Excelsior. This was the ship which earlier, while classified as a prototype vessel with an "NX-" prefix (NX-2000), had been equipped with an experimental transwarp drive, and which Sulu helped to sabotage to enable Kirk to disobey orders and take the USS Enterprise to hunt for Spock [Star Trek: The Search for Spock]. When Sulu was assigned as captain, it was to a ship re-classified as NC-2000.
While captain of USS Excelsior, Sulu carried out a 3-year scientific survey cataloguing gaseous planetary anomalies in the Beta Quadrant. In 2293, he temporarily abandoned that mission, against orders, and set course with the aim of freeing his old shipmates, Kirk and McCoy who had been wrongly charged with murdering the Klingon Chancellor. En route he encountered a Klingon bird-of-prey commanded by Captain Kang but evaded capture: an incident Sulu never entered into his log. That incident was later "witnessed" by Captain Janeway of USS Voyager via a Vulcan mind-meld with Tuvok in which she acted as his 'pyllora' [#44 Flashback]. (A pyllora is a guide that helps the subject reconstruct the memory in its entirety and objectify the experience, and they help the subject reintegrate the memory into the conscious mind; the pyllora is an observer and not a participant.) Sulu assisted Kirk in protecting the vital Federation-Klingon conference at Khitomer from an assassin out to wreck the fragile peace process. Around 2350 Sulu was on assignment patrolling the Cardassian border. It is possible that it was at this time that he met the young Chakotay who grew up in the troubled region. Sulu sponsored Chakotay's admission to Starfleet Academy in about 2350 [#25 Tattoo]. Sulu would have been 113 years old at this time. [#25 Tattoo] does not make it clear that it means Hikaru Sulu but such an age is not unusual (Admiral McCoy was aged 137 when he visited USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D in [TNG: Encounter at Farpoint]) and it cannot have been Demora as Chakotay refers to Sulu as "him". Starfleet Command honoured Sulu's contributions to space exploration by displaying his portrait in Starfleet Headquarters [#44 Flashback]. After "seeing" Sulu for herself via the Vulcan mind-meld technique, Janeway noted that Sulu did not look anything like his portrait, to which Tuvok replied that 23rd century holographic imaging resolution was less accurate [#44 Flashback]. |
