Gamma shift's crew quarters.

Crew quarters are relatively spacious, designed to be shared by four occupants, shown by the two sets of twin bunks located in one corner of the light-gray walled room. Members of one shift sleep and mess together. The heads of the bunks are connected to the bulkhead walls with a narrow support arm at the foot of the beds, which are supplied with thin blue mattresses and a single pillow.

The lighting inside the shared quarters comes from a series of bright but diffuse ceiling panels and a number of single wall lights. The lighting can be dimmed to allow the crew members to sleep, but all the main lights come on automatically if a red alert status is declared, and the captain's voice is broadcast over the ship's intercom system which does not exclude crew sleeping quarters.

The head and clothing lockers are elsewhere but junior officers' belongings can be stored in the shared room in large black chests that rest on the earth brown-colored deck or within shelving units built into the bulkhead walls.

Tables and chairs are provided within the shared crew quarters, allowing the crew to share meals and relax without having to sit on their beds. In Sulu's time replicator technology had not advanced far enough for personal food hatches to be included in the early Excelsior-class vessels.

A small stove is provided in order to produce hot beverages, and drinks can be kept in thermos flasks. The ship is supplied with a set of fine crockery which bears both the name and the registration number of the ship; Sulu drinks out Tuvok's Vulcan blend of tea from one of the cups.

Picture shows stove, lighting, built-in shelves, shelf for thermos flasks and glasses, and wall decorations.

The Excelsior possesses its own marked chinaware, although it is probably for use by the captain, maybe also by the senior officers, and on any occasions when the staff entertain or give hospitality. Tuvok pours his Vulcan blend tea into a china cup for Captain Sulu's morning tea so presumably the captain drinks tea this way every morning.

Access to the quarters is through a set of sliding double doors, and deck numbering is visible on large blue alpha-numerical displays directly outside the entrance way.

By the doors, on the inside and immediately to the right of them, is an oblong control panel which might control the lights among other things.

The captain's quarters also feature a bunk, although he does not share it with other crew members, as befits his rank. The captain's bunk has space for a row of books at the head end (glimpsed in 'Star Trek: The Search for Spock'). A door gives directly onto his sleeping area from a ship's corridor, and the bunk is positioned so that the captain is facing the door if he sits up.
