Janet's Star Trek Voyager Site

FAIR HAVEN
Episode 131
Part G

Turbulence from the neutronic wavefront tosses Voyager about.

Janeway realises that the ship is in grave danger.

Janeway ducks an explosion as an console blows out.

Janeway: "Scrape the residual ions off the sonic showers if you have to!"

clear space shows on the viewscreen

Kim reports: "Neutronic gradient's rising, 30 million terajoules, 40 million.
Janeway: "Shields."
Tuvok: "Holding."
Kim: "60 million...."
The com. signal sounds. audio: comms. signalcomms. signal "Torres to bridge. The inverse warp field's destabilising. We're losing our anchor."
Janeway, via comms: "Acknowledged." Contact ends. "How long before we're clear?"
Paris: "Just another five minutes."
Kim: "That's about four minutes too long. The gradient's rising fast. 90 million."
Paris: "Stabilisers are offline." The turbulence increases and Voyager is pounded.
Chakotay orders: "Thrusters."
Paris activates them. "No effect."
Tuvok: "Shields are failing."
Chakotay: "How close are we to the perimeter?"
Paris: "A 1,000 kilometres, but we're being pulled along with the storm."
Janeway asks Chakotay: "What did you have in mind?"
Chakotay: "A deflector beam. It might be able to cut a path through the wavefront."
Tuvok: "It's possible but we'd have to route all available power to the emitters."
Kim: "That won't be enough. Primary systems are down."
Janeway: "Then transfer all secondary power sources: transporters, replicators, holodecks."
Kim: "Captain, there's not enough time to go through the holodeck shut-down sequence. We'd lose most of Fair Haven."
This would include Michael Sullivan. She hesitates for only a moment. "Do it."
Chakotay: "Hull fractures, Decks 6 and 7."
Kim: "You've got all the secondary power, Tuvok. Is that enough?"
Tuvok: "Negative."
Chakotay: "Transfer energy from the electroplasma network, every last deciwatt!"
Tuvok: "Deflector beam active."
Voyager fires at the wavefront.
Paris: "We're approaching the perimeter. 500 kilometres, 400...."
Tuvok: "Deflector output is dropping."
Janeway: "Give it everything we've got: life support, environmental control. Scrape the residual ions off the sonic showers if you have to!"
They manage to restore the beam's output. At last Voyager is free of the wavefront! Ahead of them it is now just normal space. Janeway sighs with relief.

Voyager, flying through space at impulse speed.

Kim and Paris walk through Fair Haven, using tricorders to record data details on the damage the holoprogram sustained as the result of shutting it down without running through the holodeck shut-down sequence.

Kim, assessing the tricorder readings: "Doesn't look good, Tom. With this much photonic decay, we'll be able to save five, maybe ten per cent."
Paris: "So much for the 'luck of the Irish'."
Maggie O'Halloran and her flower cart continually fritzes.

Kim: "It might be easier to start from scratch."
Paris: "It wouldn't be the same. It'd be like trying to write a novel after the only copy of the datafile's been deleted - all the details, the nuances, they're all gone."

Seamus accosts them. "Morning, lads."
Paris: "Seamus."
Seamus: "Looks like a storm brewing. It's heading from the west." They turn to look. Paris and Kim know they are looking at part of the holodeck showing through "tears" in the holoprogram. "Could be a big one."
Paris: "Oh, right."

Seamus: "I don't suppose you could spare a shilling or two? Yes, my wife and I made up last night-" But the rest of his words cannot be understood as his program fritzes.

.....and vanishing.

Kim: "Grid's destabilising."
Paris: "We'd better get started on those repairs."
Kim: "So what do we try and save? The Ox & Lamb, the church?" and with himself in mind: "Maggie O'Halloran?"
Paris: "There's someone I should talk to before we decide."

Janeway is in her ready room, feeling most unhappy. The door signal sounds. audio: Door signaldoor signal "Come in." audio: standard doorsstandard doors Paris enters.

Paris: "Fair Haven didn't fare too well."

Janeway: "I'll break the news to the crew."
Paris: "With your permission, I'd like to reconstruct the program."
Janeway: "How long will it take?"

Paris: "Six or seven weeks. Harry tells me that we should be able to save about 10% of the existing elements. I thought you might have a suggestion or two."

It is his way of telling her that saving Michael Sullivan can be considered. She looks cheered, for the first time in days.

Janeway revisits the holographic research lab and calls up the Sullivan holographic character.

Janeway: "Hello."
Sullivan: "You disappeared on me, Katie. I woke up and you'd gone."
Janeway: "I had some thinking to do."
Sullivan: "Are you done?"
Janeway: "I'm leaving Fair Haven."
Sullivan: "Why?"
Janeway: "Because."
Sullivan: "That's not a very good reason."
Janeway: "My situation is complicated."
Sullivan: "Another man?"
Janeway: "No."
Sullivan: "Your friends, they don't approve of me?"
Janeway: "They think you're charming."
Sullivan: "Are you not ready to settle down yet?"
Janeway: "I'm as ready as I'll ever be."
Sullivan: "You're not making any sense."
Janeway: "No, I guess I'm not."
Sullivan: "Oh. I have a feeling you won't be forgetting us that easily. Fair Haven has that effect on people. But there's one thing I want you to know. I love you, Katie."
His words are what Janeway has longed to hear - she had told the Doctor that maybe she just wanted to be sure that Sullivan would love her back. "I might actually be passing this way in erm, six or seven weeks. Maybe I'll stop by the pub."
Sullivan: "See that you do."
Janeway cannot continue the conversation as she is unable to trust her feelings. To the computer: "Oh computer, end program." Sullivan disappears.
Janeway suddenly thinks of something and says to the computer: "Wait, I want to make one more modification to the character."
Computer: "Specify."
Janeway: "Deny Kathryn Janeway any future access to his behavioural subroutines."
Computer: "Modification complete."
Janeway: "Save program."
