FAIR HAVEN
Episode 131
Part A

Tom Paris has created a holoprogram which consists of a rural 19th/20th century Irish village called Fair Haven, complete with at least two pubs (Sullivan's and The Ox & Lamb), cobbled streets and village square with water pump.

A steam train departs from the Fair Haven railway station, hooting and the station bell is ringing. The steam given off by the train gradually clears, and we see porters are unloading the luggage. Under the station sign "Fair Haven" (and in Irish or Gaelic, "Cuan Someanta"), it reads "Welcome, weary traveller" with a Gaelic translation. It looks like a friendly, welcoming and homely place.

Fair Haven's cobbled streets are not crowded, but they are busy, in a non-bustling kind of way, as people go about their everyday lives as often as not with a friendly word for their neighbour. The picture shows Grace Declan sweeping the pavement.

Tom Paris strolls along the street.
Grace: "Good morning, Tom."
Paris puts his hand to his cap: "Good morning, Grace."

Seamus Driscol, one of the Irish holocharacters, comes up behind Paris and accosts him. "So, where're you heading?"
Paris: "Er, Sullivan's. Care to join me?"
This gives Seamus the opening he wants. "Ah, wish I could, but there's a bit of a problem."
Paris: "Oh, really?" Paris knows this is not at all unusual for Seamus.
Seamus's words pour out: "You see, Tommy, my boy, the good Lord blessed me with a fine wife. I'll never forget the day I met her. I was on my way to the fair in Doolin, or was it Kilkee?, there's some fine trout-fishing to be had in Kilkee at this time of year-"
Paris: "Who said anything about trout?"
Seamus: "Timothy Ryan, God rest his soul. He was one for the trout. The poor man's been dead a fortnight. Some say he had the croup, but don't you believe it. Widow Moore gave him the Evil Eye."
Paris: "And your point?"
Seamus: "My wife and I, well, we've hit a bit of a rough patch." But he insists: "A better woman never walked the face of the Earth."
Paris surmises: "She threw you out again."
Seamus: "With nothing but the clothes on my back."
Paris, of course, knows Seamus well. "How much?"
Seamus: "A shilling....or two....should suffice."
Paris hands him some money. "Keep the change."

Seamus: "God bless you, Tommy my boy." He leaves, almost scampering with his "prize" money.

Paris sighs contentedly as he looks round at his holographic creation. He spies Harry Kim with the flower-seller and goes over to them, never mind that he is interrupting an increasingly intimate moment between them.

Paris: "Harry! Weren't you supposed to meet me at Sullivan's?"
Kim: "Oh sorry, I got distracted by the er....scenery. This is Maggie."
Paris to Kim: "We've met." To Maggie: "Could you excuse us?" He takes Kim aside.
Maggie: "Charmed to have met you, Harry."
Kim: "Charmed."

To Paris, rather irritated at having been interrupted, and as he is hurried along towards Sullivan's pub: "What's the hurry?"
Paris: "A word to the wise. Stay away from Maggie O'Halloran. She's promised to a pig-farmer with a very large rake."
They have stopped to talk outside Sullivan's.

Kim: "Does she have a sister?"
Paris: "Wooden teeth."
Kim: "Oh, nothing a little adjustment to the holomatrix wouldn't fix."
Paris: "No. No, I'm not changing a thing. Fair Haven is perfect just the way it is."

Kim assumes an Irish accent. "Oh, Tommy boy, you forgot the leprechauns."
Paris laughs. "No. No leprechauns, no aliens, no starships. I want this to be a place where the crew can unwind."

The Doctor cycles up. He rings his bell to attract their attention.

He dismounts. His persona in the holoprogram is that of the village priest, Father Mulligan and he has altered his physical parameters accordingly so that he is wearing, not a Starfleet uniform, but the garb of a priest.
Doctor: "Morning, lads."

Paris: "Ah. Heard any good confessions lately?"
Doctor: "Doctor-patient confidentiality, Mr Paris."

Paris: "Harry hasn't seen Sullivan's yet. Care to join us?"
Doctor: "Don't mind if I do." He start ups the stairs at the entrance to Sullivan's pub. "I'll need to leave no later than 1300 hours."
Paris: "Medical emergency?"

Doctor: "Not exactly. I'm working on my homily for Sunday's Mass," Kim's attention wanders to Maggie and they exchange warm smiles, "and I expect both you sinners," he raps the railing to attract Kim's erring attention, "to be in attendance."

Paris to Kim as they enter Sullivan's: "He's kidding, right?"
Kim teases: "You wanted authenticity."

Inside Sullivan's, Liam flexes his hand muscles as Paris calls out: "Everybody, place your bets!"

Paris accepts a bet from Seamus who puts money, probably what he got from Paris himself, into the hat. "Three bob on Liam."
Paris: "Three bob it is."
Doctor: "Five shillings on Liam."
Paris: "You're going to hurt Harry's feelings."
Doctor, grumpily: "Very well. Two shillings on Mr Kim and I'll pray for a miracle."

Seamus: "Excuse me, Father, but I need a bit of counsel."
Doctor: "I'm busy right now."
Seamus: "But I've broken the Fifth Commandment again."
Doctor, unconsciously mixing the doctoral in with the pastoral: "Say ten Our Fathers and call me in the morning."
Seamus crosses himself and they part.

He goes over to the table where Kim and Liam are ready to begin the arm-wrestling contest. "Gentlemen!" He raps a glass three times on the table as the signal to begin.
The sound of the excited crowd is deafening as they shout support for their man. The Doctor joins in, calling out: "Go on, Mr Kim, show him what for!"

During the arm-wrestling contest, Janeway enters and wanders over to the bar where Michael Sullivan, the bar-keep, has just served some drinks.

Sullivan asks her: "What'll it be?"
Janeway: "I'm looking for some friends of mine."
Sullivan: "We're all friends here."
Janeway: "Well, then, have you seen Tom Paris?"
Sullivan: "He's right over there," he indicates, "with young Harry."

Janeway watches the proceedings with interest.
"Poor sod." Sullivan is referring to Kim. "I'm afraid no one's whipped Liam in three years."
Janeway: "There's a first time for everything."
Sullivan: "An optimist, are you?"
Janeway: "A realist."
He smiles.

Liam forces Kim's arm right over until it touches the table....almost! But then Kim summons up extra strength and, shouting with the effort, forces Liam's arm over.....and wins! He is thrilled!

Seamus to Liam: "Come on, my boy, push, push!"

Doctor: "Try! Try!"  Kim: "I'm trying!"  Doctor: "Come on, try harder!"

Seamus to Liam: "You've got him, you've got him."
Doctor to Kim: "You're losing!"

Kim starts to turn the tide.

Seamus: "What in God's name...? Come on, Liam, push!"

Victorious Kim: "Yes! Yes!"

The Doctor tells Kim as he collects his winnings, belying what he told Paris earlier: "I knew you could do it, Ensign!"

Janeway goes up to Paris. "This is the program I've been hearing so much about."
Paris: "'Welcome, weary traveller'."

Janeway: "You've outdone yourself this time. Everything is authentic, except for one tiny detail."
Paris: "Oh?"
Janeway indicates the crest on the wall. "The harp on the sign - it's backwards."
Paris looks, then jokes: "Oh, everybody's a critic."

Doctor: "As I recall, the Captain is quite an afficionado of Irish history."
Janeway: "I hate to break up the party, but we have some business to attend to. There's a neutronic wavefront approaching, class 9."
Kim notes the severity of the wavefront: "Class 9?"

They start to leave. Kim spins his hat up on to his head.
Paris: "Sorry, boys - duty calls."
Seamus: "Er...'wavefront', now what in the name of God is that?"
Paris: "Er....a wee bit of bad weather."
In the background, Janeway smiles at this.

As she leaves, she looks back at Sullivan, and smiles. He smiles back.
