SHUTTLECRAFT

In 2404, Admiral Kathryn Janeway employs a specially adapted personal shuttlecraft to undertake a dangerous trip into her own past in order to ensure that USS Voyager and crew do not spend an additional 16 years traveling back to the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant. The modifications to the weapons and shield generator system do not impact heavily on the internal configuration of the small but powerful vessel, which takes the form of a compact and well-equipped cockpit and living area that provide a high level of comfort for its occupants during use.

Cockpit The interior is entered through a large hatch built into the stern of the shuttle, and includes a variety of controls and monitoring stations for all of the ship's vital functions. The number of interfaces present within the cockpit is somewhat reduced compared to earlier shuttle designs because of the revolutionary synaptic transceiver control system that works in conjunction with a neural reception device built into the ship's hardware, allowing the majority of commands to be issued through thought alone.

Audible commands are also used extensively to instruct the computer on new course headings or to activate the offensive and defensive systems, with the computer itself also able to relay vital tactical and navigational information; the ship itself only requires one individual to operate it, however. Despite the relatively low profile of the shuttle's sleek exterior, the interior of the ship has been designed to offer a generous amount of space for its occupants.

The highest part of the ship is toward the stern, thus allowing an officer of average height to stand upright all the way to the front of the cockpit. (The device in the foreground of the screenshot is not an original part of the shuttlecraft but which is subsequently installed by the Admiral.) A narrow walkway is created between the forward and rear sections by two flat consoles attached to the port and starboard bulkhead walls curving out toward each other, with the headroom limited somewhat by an angled support beam running along the upper bulkheads and flat ceiling of the interior. Built into the top of this area is the emergency transporter that can also be initiated remotely via use of a tricorder, and there is enough room in the light gray paneled stern to comfortably house two members of staff and their equipment. The rear of this small bay features the large entrance, and also incorporates two small touch-sensitive control interfaces built into the rear bulkhead either side of the doorway at floor level.

In keeping with all of Starfleet's interior designs, materials are carefully selected to maximize the illusion of space in confined areas. The employment of light gray horizontal paneling to the rear and sides works in conjunction with the light brown colored carpeting that covers the deck plates, and the installation of large illuminated panels in the ceiling provides ample lighting inside the cockpit. The lighting changes dramatically within the vessel when its ablative armor is initiated, with red alert indicator bars flashing below the consoles located along the side walls. Additional lighting is provided in this state by glowing blue strips mounted directly below the red indicators, complementing the color of the armor's interior surface as seen through the large external viewing ports. The pilot's position is located on the starboard side of the shuttle, with a large, deeply upholstered chair identical to the one positioned to its left allowing the occupant to easily reach the various controls and monitor screens located across the front of the vessel. It is from this position that the pilot can also operate the shuttle via the synaptic transceiver.

Console location

The consoles located to the port and starboard rear that form a partial barrier between the fore and aft sections consist of similar interfaces, and take the form of wide, flat black screens with green animated computer displays. The starboard control station features a short downwardly angled control panel directly beneath the display screen, with the lower support stanchion incorporating several black colored panels. Access to the vessel's systems can be gained through floor-level panels running along both sides of the ship, designed for ease of use during repairs or modifications. Admiral Janeway's shuttlecraft includes the addition of the Klingon Korath's chrono-deflector, which is controlled from the central forward command console and a smaller monitor at the rear of the interior. Once installed, the chrono-deflector's operation can be initiated by similar verbal commands used to operate the vessel's other systems, including the employment of pre-set defensive patterns during combat scenarios and audiovisual communications. It is also possible to activate a tachyon pulse and direct it at specific spatial and temporal coordinates, illustrating the high flexibility of the shuttlecraft's computer systems in working with non-Federation technologies.
