Seven of Nine (later known aboard Voyager as just "Seven") was born Annika Hansen in 2348, on stardate 25479, at the Tendara colony in Federation space, of parents Magnus and Erin Hansen who were noted scientists. more plus discussion, part of STAR DATES article

Magnus and Erin Hansen were last seen (as recorded by Federation records available to Janeway in early 2374) in the Omega Sector: they departed from Deep Space 4 aboard their science vessel SS Raven heading for the Delta Quadrant, and did not lodge a flight plan. We learn what happened to the Hansens as 'Star Trek Voyager' episodes unfold. The Hansens' ship SS Raven went to the Delta Quadrant (and was later found by Seven and Tuvok) and the Hansens studied Borg behaviour for several years, even for some time going on board a Borg cube undetected [#109 and #110 Dark Frontier]. | ![]() Erin Hansen. The Hansens were attacked by a Borg cube in the B'omar region of space and crashed on a class-M moon [#74 The Raven]. The ship ended up as a wreck and was later destroyed, in 2374, by B'omar weapons bombardment. The Borg boarded SS Raven. Erin Hansen was presumed killed or assimilated, Magnus Hansen was assimilated, and Annika was assimilated at the age of six [#74 The Raven]. |

In early 2374, when Janeway made the innovative, bold and dangerous proposal of an alliance with the Borg against their mutual enemy, whom the Borg designated Species 8472, the Borg drone that Annika had become was assigned to liaise with Janeway. | ![]() |

Borg nanoprobes proved the key to winning the war against Species 8472. The Doctor adapted nanoprobes extracted from the dead Borg found on the planet of the Sakari race [#58 Blood Fever]. He created a cure for the bio-virus that was killing Kim, and this provided the basis for a weapon against Species 8472.
Janeway offered to share the nanoprobe knowledge with the Borg in return for Voyager's safe passage through Borg space. An uneasy alliance was formed between Voyager and the Borg. |

After the new bio-weapon was used against Species 8472 forcing Species 8472 to end the war and return to their own realm of fluidic space, the Borg reneged on the Borg's deal with Voyager. When Seven of Nine began to assimilate the bridge, Janeway called on Chakotay to sever Seven of Nine's link with the Borg Collective using the pre-arranged codeword "scorpion". [Scorpion]
Seven of Nine, now severed from the Borg Collective, was taken to sickbay. Her human physiology began to reassert itself. To save her life the Doctor removed as much of the Borg technology as he could i.e. 82%. Seven of Nine was horrified, panic-stricken and furious to discover the trend of the Doctor's treatment: "What have you done to me?!"

Janeway established an uneasy rapport with her and held out the attractions of being human: "It's obvious that you're in pain, that you're frightened, that you feel isolated, alone. ... You were part of a vast consciousness: billions of minds working together a harmony of purpose and thought, no indecision, no doubts, the security and strength of a unified will, and you've lost that. ... I can't give you back to the Borg. But you're not alone. You're part of a human community now, a human collective. We may be individuals but we live and work together. You can have some of the unity you require, right here on Voyager. ... Do you remember her? Her name was Annika Hansen. She was born on stardate 25479 at the Tendara colony. There's still a lot we don't know about her. Did she have any siblings, who were her friends, where did she go to schoool, what was your favourite colour? ... One voice can be stronger than a thousand voices. Your mind is independent now with its own unique identity. ... I'm just giving you back what was stolen from you, the existence you were denied, the child who never had a chance. That life is yours to live now. ... It's what you are, don't resist it."
At first Seven of Nine made vehement demands to be returned to the Borg and resisted becoming human. When the opportunity arose, she tried to contact the Collective but was thwarted by Kes' new-found mental powers [#70 The Gift]. Seven of Nine: "This drone cannot survive outside the Collective. ... This drone is small now, alone. One voice, one mind. The silence is unacceptable. We need the others. ... Your attempts to assimilate this drone will fail. You can alter our physiology but you cannot change our nature. We will betray you. We are Borg." (As far as Chakotay was concerned, the last words proved prophetic in [#109 and #110 Dark Frontier].) |

In the end, to use a well-known phrase, resistance was futile as Seven of Nine gradually accepted her human nature. However the process was a voyage of self-discovery fraught with difficulties, portrayed in various stories from [#70 The Gift] in Season Four onwards. |
