Seven began suffering disturbing memory flashbacks and nightmares featuring a raven [#74 The Raven]. She experienced these and recorded them in a personal log even before the moment when a Borg resonance signal (homing signal) reached her; the moment occurred while Seven was tasting her first meal (see Food). The resonance signal emanated from her parents' ship SS Raven: it triggered the regeneration of certain of Seven's Borg implants, and its pull was so strong that it caused Seven to leave Voyager, despite attempts to stop her, and return to SS Raven [The Raven].

Janeway traced her location from interpreting Seven's personal log notes on a recurring raven nightmare.

Tuvok beamed onto Seven's shuttlecraft and momentarily was Seven's prisoner. But she decided that she would not take him onto the moon (the source of the homing signal). She told him he must return to Voyager, unassimilated, report and thank Janeway for trying to help her - very human sentiments.

Out of friendship Tuvok insisted on accompanying Seven to the source of the resonance signal. They discovered the wreck of SS Raven. On board many of Seven's memories resurfaced: she remembered her birthday party on board, her parents being dragged away by Borg drones, and herself trying to hide.

Seven and Tuvok were forced to abandon the Raven when the B'omar attacked and destroyed the remains of the ship.

They took back to Voyager information downloaded from SS Raven's computers. This was data on the Borg collected by her parents which Seven ignored until forced to read it months later in [#109 and #110 Dark Frontier].

When Voyager was deceived by the alien, Arturis, into believing the Federation had sent them a state-of-the-art ship, USS Dauntless, to bring them to Earth within months, at first Seven reacted vehemently against the thought of returning quickly to Earth. But when Arturis' deception was uncovered, together with his plan to deliver Voyager's crew to the Borg, Seven realised at last that she did not want to be re-assimilated. In that story [#94 Hope and Fear] Janeway helped Seven confront of fear of the unknown that Earth represented.

Janeway: "This crew needs your expertise. ... We've given you alot, Seven. It's time you gave something in return."
Seven: "I have, on many occasions. Now I refuse."
Janeway: "This isn't about your independence or your superiority. This is about your fear. You're not making this choice because you've outgrown humanity. I think you're afraid to go back to Earth."

In [#94 Hope and Fear], Seven plays Velocity with Janeway on the holodeck and learns that the aim is not just to win but being sportsmanlike, and that instinct can help win the game. While trying to escape Arturis' fiendish plan to deliver them to the Borg, Janeway encourages Seven by telling her: "We have a game of Velocity scheduled for tomorrow, Holodeck 1. I expect you to keep the appointment."
Velocity.[Hope and Fear]

After they escape Arturis, Seven and Janeway play their scheduled game of Velocity. After a game, Seven prefers not to have one more round of Velocity with Janeway because she has work to do - she is trying to make the slipstream drive stable so that it can be used. Janeway notes the change towards hopefulness in her - now Seven wants to get to Earth. Seven admits, "The prospect of becoming a drone was unappealing."
Janeway replies, "Sometimes you've got to look back in order to look forward." They start one more game of Velocity.
