FAMILY & BACKGROUND

Admiral Janeway [#57 Coda]
Kathryn Janeway was born in the state of Indiana on Earth [Hope and Fear], her hometown is Bloomington [#148 Imperfection].

At the age of 6 Janeway learned a dying swan dance. It was the hit of her beginners ballet class and later, in 2373, was the hit of Talent Night aboard USS Voyager [#57 Coda].

When she was a child, Janeway's grandfather gave her a 600-year-old telescope which she later keeps in the Captain's Ready Room on Voyager [#104 Counterpoint].

Her father was a Starfleet admiral [#57 Coda]. She was close to him and grieved deeply when he accidentally drowned in 2358 under the polar ice cap of the planet Tau Ceti Prime; she was devastated and spent a long time just sleeping away her days until her sister forced her back into the real world; several times after he died she woke up and was convinced he was in the room with her [#57 Coda].

Amelia Earhart [#20 The 37's]
She has a sister, who was the artist of the family [#49 Sacred Ground]. It is not known if she has/had more than one sister, but it could be this same sister to whom she intends to speak in live contact via Project Pathfinder's link, noted in [#166 Author Author]. Janeway's childhood heroes include Amelia Earhart (left picture) who inspired her to join Starfleet, and whom she actually later met [#20 The 37's]. Another childhood inspiration was her ancestor Shannon O'Donnel (the old lady in the right picture) who later became Mrs Henry Janeway [#117 11:59].

Her parents took her camping to take her back to her pioneering roots but she hated it [#41 Resolutions]. At the age of 9 she hiked the north rim of the Grand Canyon; her father called it "Earth's biggest ditch" [#148 Imperfection]. She thought it too dusty and prefers farm country.

[#79 Concerning Flight]
Leonardo da Vinci was one of her childhood heroes, and she built models of some of his designs, [#74 The Raven]. In [#145 The Haunting Of Deck Twelve] it can be seen that she has a drawing of the Maestro - see pictures below.

As a child she enjoyed the children's holotales 'The Adventures of Flotter' [#99 Once Upon A Time].

Janeway's aunt Martha tells stories about ancestor Shannon O'Donnel, who married ancestor Henry Janeway. Shannon apparently worked on the Millennium Gate and Mars projects. In 2375, in [#117 11:59], Janeway learned that in fact Shannon worked on the Millennium Gate project just as a consultant and never worked on any Mars project.

Janeway's birthday is 20th May [#76 and #77 Year of Hell].
