MENTAL POWERS : Page 1
![]() Kes consults the Doctor about her vision and is told her brain is not on file. [#4 Time and Again] |
Kes believed her people's ancient legends which said the Ocampa possessed extraordinary mental powers such as limited telepathy and the ability to see visions from the future or contemporaneous events happening elsewhere. Soon after she arrived on Voyager, these powers began to surface in Kes, when she sensed the destruction of a planet [#4 Time and Again]. Neelix and Kes went to sickbay to consult the Doctor about Kes' visions. The Doctor, discovering for the first time that the pair have recently arrived on the ship along with the Maquis crew, suggests that as her people have had a history of mental abilities this may her mind's way of flexing its muscles. |

When Janeway manages to alter time, restoring the planet and also herself and Paris back aboard Voyager, Kes retains the residual sense of some catastrophe related to the planet. She goes to the bridge and asks to see the planet on the viewscreen. She is reassured to see the planet is safe. Voyager does not make contact with the inhabitants, however, as it is a pre-warp society. | ![]() Kes is reassured to see the planet is safe [#4 Time And Again] |
![]() Kes senses a presence [#13 Cathexis] | Kes' mental attributes meant that she was able to sense the presence of individuals or events, although not usually with any precise understanding or knowledge of what she sensed. In late 2371, in [#13 Cathexis], Kes sensed a presence aboard Voyager, which later turned out to be Chakotay's disembodied consciousness, which was the result of his being attacked by a species of trianic energy beings called the Komar. |

Her growing mental powers often contributed to her adventures as either a cause or as an aid. She formed a bond with Tuvok, who as a Vulcan also possessed telepathic abilities. He guided Kes through a series of mind-control techniques to help her develop, understand and control her powers (mentioned in [#24 Persistence Of Vision].
In 2372, in [#24 Persistence Of Vision], a different aspect of Kes' mental powers manifests itself while Voyager's crew is targetted by a mischievously malevolent Bothan. The Bothan is capable of creating a psionic field which causes a strong psycho-active effect, causing a crewmember to hallucinate and the Bothan can thereby also adopt 'disguises' such as 'becoming' someone else on the crew or someone known to them. For instance, he causes Janeway to hallucinate that Mark, her fiancé is with her. Once the crewmember gives in to the hallucination, they end up in a frozen state, locked into the hallucination. But Kes is aware that something is wrong from early on. After Janeway starts seeing holo-items and holocharacters from her gothic holonovel elsewhere on the ship, she is taken to sickbay. When she wakes from the hallucination, she sees Beatrice, one of the holocharacters. Kes enters and also sees her. Unwittingly, Kes acts as a mirror, forcing Beatrice away from her (and apparently into Janeway). Shortly afterwards Kes does the same when Janeway hallucinates that she (Janeway) is attacked in her quarters by a knife-wielding holocharacter. Afterwards Kes tells Janeway: "Captain, I saw your hallucination again. You were struggling with a woman. She had a knife. She was trying to hurt you. As I focussed on you, it was just like with the little girl. The image seemed to reflect off of me and move back into you. .... I think something strange is happening on this ship and it's not just happening to you." Later Kes, with the Doctor's assistance, initiates a resonance burst from the warp core which destroys the psionic field, but while she carries out the work, she is forced to withstand a strong mental attack by the Bothan who has disguised himself as Paris then Neelix. Urged by the Doctor, she manages to stare back at the Bothan and create the mirror effect again, reflecting back onto the Bothan the painful skin eruptions he has caused her to hallucinate. It is a combination of the resonance burst and Kes' resistance which overcome the Bothan. |
