CAREER

briefing room meeting, [#3 Parallax]

airponics bay. [#26 Cold Fire]
When Kes suggested an airponics bay to grow natural food, Janeway assigned Kes to look after the airponics bay which was converted from a cargo bay. This was to supplement Voyager's replicator rations, as it was thought prudent to use these sparingly to save power.

Kes became the Doctor's medical assistant. The conversations in early 2371, in [#5 Phage], that started it all:

Kes: "You seem agitated about something."
Doctor: "Of course I'm agitated. This entire situation is getting out of control."
Kes: "You mean Neelix."
Doctor: "First they tell me there's no doctor, so I have to be on call 24 hours a day. And then they tell me there are no nurses so I have no one to assist me."
Kes: "I thought Tom Paris was assigned to you."
Doctor: "Like I said: no one to assist me. And now I have a patient with severe and possibly long-term emotional problems, and there's no counsellor on board. I am an emergency medical supplement, a supplement, that's all. I wasn't programmed for any of this. It's just," he hesitates as he searches for the right word, "unacceptable."
Kes: "I don't know anything about holographic engineering but if you want my opinion you haven't been 'acceptable', you've been remarkable."
Doctor: "I've only done what the program allows me to."
Kes: "Give yourself some credit. You saved his life. You did, not some program."
Doctor: "It may seem that way to you."
Kes: "That's exactly how it seems."
Doctor: "You're very kind."
Kes: "How does a real doctor learn to deal with a patient's emotional problems anyway?"
Doctor: "They learn from experience."
Kes: "Are you capable of learning?"
Doctor: "I have the capacity to accumulate and process data, yes."
Kes: "Then I guess you'll just have to learn, like the rest of us."
Doctor: "Have you ever considered a career in medicine?"
And later:
Doctor: "I spoke to the Captain about you. She's given me permission to begin training you as a medical assistant. You'll be a backup for Mr Paris or possibly a replacement, that is, assuming you're interested."
Kes: "Of course I'm interested."

[#7 Eye Of The Needle]
The Doctor was Kes' medical tutor, as well as becoming her close friend, helping her towards her goal of becoming a nurse [#5 Phage]. She proved to have an excellent memory and was thirsty for knowledge.
Kes to the Doctor: "I've studied all the material you gave me. I'm ready for more." and later, she tells the Doctor: "Doctor, I think I'd like to do more than study first aid. I'd be interested in knowing more about anatomy and physiology." The Doctor hands her two PADDs (pictured), saying: "These deal with human anatomy and physiology but they weren't written for the layman. They're quite technical."

within a few weeks, Kes is ably assisting the Doctor; here, like a nurse, she places a hypospray of 2 cc's of netinaline into his hand when he calls for it. audio: hypospray injectionhypospray injection

Kes has a profound influence on the development of the Doctor's character and role on Voyager. She also initiates, in [#7 Eye Of The Needle], by talking to Captain Janeway, a crew-wide increase in civility toward the Doctor which eventually develops into crew respect for the Doctor.

in early 2372, in [#25 Tattoo], she persuades him to be more sympathetic to his patients by understanding how they feel, and when he experiments by programming a dose of flu for himself she makes the experience more realistic by adding extra time to it so that, like his patients, he would not have the comfort of knowing when it would end

assisting the Doctor in emergency treatment, though unfortunately in this case the patient (Kurt Bendera) died, [#30 Alliances]

in 2373, in [#46 The Swarm], the Doctor's memory degrades and he forgets how to carry out an operation and Kes has to prompt him, pictured below

Kes is forced to take charge. Under her supervision, the Doctor later reports: "Alright, I've repaired the damaged pre-ganglionic fibres in the spinal column."
Kes: "The final step is to restore the nerve sheath. You'll need the myelin regenerator." She hands it to him.
Suddenly audio alarms sound.
Doctor: "What is it?"
Kes: "He's going into respiratory arrest!"
Doctor: "What do I do?"
Kes: "Er, apply an efferent impulse to stabilise his motor neurons."

Doctor: "Apply a what?"
Kes shows him.
Kes checks the read-outs. "Lifesigns are returning to normal." She sighs with relief. "Regeneration is complete. What's the synaptic potential reading?"
She has to indicate which read-out he should look at. He looks at it. "Synaptic potentials are normal. Autonomic and somatic systems are functioning."
