Kim and Paris have developed a close friendship, which began with Paris rescuing him from being scammed by Quark, the Ferengi owner of the bar on Deep Space 9, over a matter of some Lobi crystals Quark was trying to cajole Kim into buying. Despite being told by other crewmembers about Paris' involvement in the deaths of three Starfleet officers, Kim ignored their hints and chose to be friends with Paris. Kim told him: "I don't need anyone to choose my friends for me."

Paris and Kim can often be seen dining together in the messhall.

Paris will even enter Kim's room while he is sleeping. On this occasion he wanted to introduce Kim to his new holoprogram Sandrine's bar. "Dark enough for you?" asks Paris, swiping away Kim's sleeping mask. Kim explained that his room-mate at the Academy, James Mooney McAllister, never slept because he studied algorithims till dawn. Kim did not move out because he got Kim through 4th year quantum chemistry.

Paris visits Kim. Kim explains that he ate Neelix's food for a while to save enough replicator rations to replicate a clarinet. Paris encourages him to carry on with his clarinet practice and play for him. He also confides to Kim that he is in love with Kes, which is a big problem as she is going out with Neelix.

When Paris left Voyager for good, and under a cloud, in [#36 Investigations], Kim was one of only three people who turned up to say farewell and watch him leave. (The other two were Neelix and Kes.) It turned out that Paris was part of an elaborate plan known only to Janeway and Tuvok, and later to Chakotay and Neelix, for uncovering the traitor aboard Voyager who was giving secrets to Seska and the Kazon-Nistrim.

In [#45 The Chute], Kim defended a severely injured Paris when they were both incarcerated in an Akritirian prison: "This man is my friend. Nobody touches him!" Later, back on board Voyager, as they left Sickbay Paris suggested he and Kim blow a week's replicator rations on the slap-up meal they were imagining in prison. Kim reminded Paris that he tried to kill him. Paris replied: "You want to know what I remember? Someone saying, 'This man is my friend. Nobody touches him.' I'll remember that for a long time."

Paris and Kim spend time on the holodeck together in various holoprograms ranging from holodeck simulation of a bar in Marseilles, Paris 3 (Sandrine's), to historical sci-fi.

In [#73 Revulsion], at the dinner given in honour of Tuvok who is to be promoted to Lieutenant Commander, Kim and Paris relates how they rigged the internal sensors to say "Live long and prosper" for a whole day whenever Tuvok accessed them.

In [#111 The Disease], Paris spotted that Kim was having an affair with Derran Tal of the Varro people. Paris and Kim return from the Varro ship and exit from a transporter room and head for Kim's quarters. Paris: "Friendly people." Kim: "They've had a lot of bad experiences with other species." Paris: "Well, I don't know. Seems like your first contact went pretty well." Kim: "What's that supposed to mean?" Paris: "I'm just wondering where you disappeared to today." Kim: "I told you: I was checking the plasma conduits in Segment 22." Paris: "In Segement 22, I know. They must have sonic showers over there. You're much cleaner than when you left. You are such a lousy liar Haven't you learned anything from me over the past five years? She's cute." Kim: "Who?" Paris: "That assistant engineer, Tal." Kim: "Cute enough." Paris: "Oh, here we go again." Kim: "What?" Paris: "You. Going after impossible women: a hologram, an ex-Borg, the wrong twin, and now a girl from a xenophobic species?" Kim: "You're right, you're absolutely right. I'm putting her out of my mind. I promise." Paris: "Good, glad to hear it." Later, when Kim's secret communication to her was detected by Tuvok's security system, Paris got Kim out of a difficult spot by shutting down the signal. Next day Paris told Kim, "You owe me."

In [#138 Ashes to Ashes], Paris observed that Kim and Ballard have been spending a lot of time together lately and he correctly surmised Kim's romantic feelings for her. Paris: "Now let's see. For those of us keeping score, Harry Kim has fallen for a hologram, a Borg, the wrong twin, and now the dearly departed." Kim: "We're friends." Paris: "Just like before." Kim: "Alright, maybe there was a time when I thought of pursuing Lindsay, but I closed the door on that." Paris: "Mmm. Don't look now, but that door is creeping open."
