CREW COMPLEMENT - Page 2

There is a Summary at the end of the page.

Icheb [#154 Nightingale]
Shortly afterwards, in [#139 Child's Play], Voyager takes Icheb home to his people, the Brunali, and restore him to his parents Leucon and Yifay. However, when it is realised that they genetically engineered him as a viral weapon against the Borg, have used him once for that purpose and are trying to do so again, the Voyager crew rescue him and Icheb returns to Voyager. It is possible that at or about this time, or maybe as late as [#148 Imperfection] when he decides to take the entry tests for Starfleet Academy, that Icheb would be entered onto the Crew Manifest, in view of Icheb's work using ship's systems (assigned to the Astrometrics Lab). He would probably be listed as "Crewman" like Neelix.

In early 2377, in [#148 Imperfection], Rebi and Azan are reunited with their people and they leave the ship along with Mezoti who will live with them.

CREW COMPLEMENT SO FAR:

After the departure of three of the Borg children, in [#148 Imperfection], Marika Wilkarah, ref. [#122 Survival Instinct], is definitely dead as she had only a month to live at most at the time. Accordingly, the number of people aboard Voyager is 145. Again, the Doctor is probably not included in that figure. Naomi Wildman and Icheb are minors. Honorary member of the crew Lieutenant Reg Barclay, ref. [#130 Pathfinder], is not included in this figure.

Later in [#148 Imperfection], Seven calls up on the main viewscreen in the Astrometrics Lab a list of crewmembers who have died under Janeway's command of Voyager. Seven lists: Ensign Marie Kaplan (killed in [#59 Unity], Ensign Lyndsay Ballard ref. [#138 Ashes To Ashes], and Technician Timothy Lang. Lang joins Kim and the Doctor on an away mission to a class-M planet in 2375, in [#119 Warhead] and is ordered to remain with the frightened Druoda sentient warhead discovered on the surface. On close inspection of the screen other names can be made out, being certain characters from the U.S. television drama series 'The West Wing', namely Commander J. Bartlett, Lieutenant Commander L. McGarry, Lieutenant Commander T. Ziegler, Lieutenant J. Lyman, Lieutenant S. Seaborn, Ensign Claudia J. Craig and Ensign Charles Young. For more detail see the PERSONAL LOG entry for this episode. No information is given about 'The West Wing' characters in the episode's dialogue, but one can speculate that Commander Bartlett may have been killed before the Maquis joined the crew in early 2371, otherwise he would have been next in line for First Officer, but since Janeway promotes Torres to Chief Engineer ahead of Lieutenant Joe Carey who was next in line for the job it is possible that she did the same thing for Chakotay over Bartlett; indeed, she promotes him over everyone, and likewise promotes Tom Paris to Lieutenant over whoever might have been considered next in line for promotion to Lieutenant.

partial list of casualties [#148 Imperfection]

As regards the above deaths, apart from the deaths of Kaplan, Ballard and Lang, it is tempting to speculate that these deaths occurred in the intervening periods of references to crew numbers so that inconsistencies can be partly accounted for by these deaths.

In [#150 Repression], the story which portrays a Maquis mutiny (a real one, not the holographic creation seen in [#67 Worst Case Scenario]), Chakotay notes that there are twenty-three former Maquis who have not joined the insurrection yet. Added to the seven participating members, that makes a total of thirty former Maquis currently on board Voyager. Named Maquis crewmen not seen or named before now are Crewman Yosa, Doyle (Doyle's name is not mentioned in dialogue, only in the script and in the end credits), and Crewman Jor. Previously named Maquis in this episode are Crewman Chell and Ensign Tabor, seen in [#16 Learning Curve] and [#102 Nothing Human] respectively. A Vulcan woman (unlikely to be Romulan) and a Bolian woman are seen among the Maquis crewmembers. The female Bolian could be Ensign Golwat, mentioned in [#44 Flashback] and seen receiving a letter from home in [#83 Hunters]. The presence of the Vulcan woman seems to be a blooper, see PERSONAL LOG entry for this episode.

As noted on Page 1 near the start of this article during discussion of [#1 and #2 Caretaker], in [#154 Nightingale], Kim says (while comparing hardships with a male of the Kraylor species) that Voyager lost over a dozen crew members when the ship was originally pulled into the Delta Quadrant. This, along with information given elsewhere in the series, e.g. the 2371-era Janeway in [#157 Shattered], which story takes place shortly after [#154 Nightingale], saying she began her mission with a crew of 153, enables the crew complement at that time to be estimated.

As noted above, later in 2377, in [#158 Lineage], Paris notes that the species make-up of the Voyager crew includes Bajorans, Vulcans and Talaxian. Torres, however, reminds him that there are 140 humans. Other species, not mentioned by Paris, are Betazoid and Bolian. When one tallies the crew known to be of other species and adds those that are known to be or are believed to be still alive at this time, an estimate of the crew complement is possible - more information is given on Page 1.

In late 2377, in [#166 Author Author], Neelix uses 146 sequentially numbered isolinear chips, one for each member of the crew (this of course includes the Doctor, who has long been considered part of the crew), put into his hat for people to draw one each so as to determine the order in which the crew members will make live contact with home thanks to a communications breakthrough by the combined efforts of the Voyager crew (particularly Kim) and Project Pathfinder (particularly Barclay). Barclay's status as an honorary member of the Voyager's crew is discussed on Page 1. Although Icheb would not have any relatives on Earth to talk to, as he is a Brunali, presumably he is included in the opportunity to speak to someone on Earth, if only to allow him access to study material for his exam entry for Starfleet Academy.

CREW COMPLEMENT SO FAR:

In [#166 Author Author] Neelix uses 146 isolinear chips, one for each member of the crew, presumably one for each person on board, including the Doctor, and presumably including Naomi Wildman and Icheb. The figure of 146 excludes the honorary member of the crew Lieutenant Reg Barclay, ref. [#130 Pathfinder], who is not in the Delta Quadrant but at Starfleet Headquarters.

Tragedy befalls Voyager one more time when, in late 2377, in [#167 Friendship One], Lieutenant Joe Carey is murdered by the alien named Verin. Carey, first seen in [#1 and #2 Caretaker], features in several episodes especially [#3 Parallax], [#10 Prime Factors], [#11 State Of Flux] and this one. He leaves a widow and two sons, whom he mentions in [#10 Prime Factors].

In late 2377, Neelix leaves Voyager to settle permanently among some fellow-Talaxians on their asteroid-colony, to continue his new romantic relationship with Dexa. His erasure from the Crew Manifest represents a loss for Voyager but a gain for Dexa and her son Brax.

arrival of baby Miral [#171 and #172 Endgame]
Towards the end of 2377, the daughter of Tom Paris and B'Elanna Torres is born and USS Voyager returns safely to the Alpha Quadrant. But in an unrealised timeline, in 2380 Seven was injured on an away mission. She made it back to Voyager only in time to die in the arms of her husband, Chakotay. He never recovers from the loss and dies not long after Voyager reaches home 16 years after 2377. Admiral Janeway, who has travelled from the future timeline, tells Captain Janeway (her younger self) that from the day when Voyager first enters the Borg nebula encased in anti-Borg armour then retreats on seeing a Borg transwarp hub, she lost 22 crewmembers. It is not clear if she includes Seven in that number. However, thanks to the success of the plan devised by both Janeways, Admiral Janeway's future timeline never occurs so there are no more crew deaths noted after the death of Lieutenant Carey.

CREW COMPLEMENT SO FAR:

After Miral's birth in [#171 and #172 Endgame], there are 145 people on board USS Voyager including the Doctor.

SUMMARY

  1. The show's writers paid scant attention in early Seasons to maintaining plausible crew numbers for continuity purposes. They tried to do in later Seasons but deliberately kept the numbers imprecise for reasons of drama flexibility.
  2. ST:M's article "How Big Is The USS Voyager's Crew?" of October 2000 was rendered incorrect and thus unreliable because it could not refer to information provided in episodes aired after the article's publication, these being the episodes [#150 Repression], [#154 Nightingale], [#157 Shattered] and [#166 Author Author], and as regards the departure of Neelix, the loss of Carey and the addition of Miral the episodes [#169 Homestead], [#167 Friendship One] and [#171 and #172 Endgame] respectively.
  3. The series does not say how many Maquis joined the Voyager crew (nor indeed are all the Maquis individually identified - only 22 are identified and there are queries for at least two). It had to be over 35, deduced from information in [#150 Repression] and a tally of Maquis losses.
  4. It is not always clear in certain episodes whether the Doctor is included, or Neelix or Kes although Neelix is designated "crewman" in [#105 Latent Image], or the minors (Naomi Wildman, and the Borg children Icheb, Mezoti, Azan and Rebi).
  5. As at mid-2373, in [#58 Blood Fever], Vorik says there are 73 male crew on board (for mating purposes and he thus presumably excludes the Doctor who is a hologram; and it is only later in [#82 Message In A Bottle] that the tv viewer learns the Doctor is and has been capable of mating, presumably with Danara Pel ref. [#35 Lifesigns].).
  6. Voyager's crew complement is predominantly human, with 140 humans in 2377 in [#158 Lineage]. There are a number of persons from other species including, for a time in Season 6, several alien children (starting ref. [#136 Collective]).
  7. Crew numbers are mentioned in dialogue as follows, with notes deduced or assumed as discussed above:
    1. Janeway says the Badlands mission started with 153. The figure probably excludes Tuvok and the EMH Doctor, source [#157 Shattered]. The figure turns Stadi's figure of 141, given in [#1 and #2 Caretaker], from an indication of the Badlands mission crew complement (excluding probably Tuvok and Tom Paris and the EMH Doctor) into an incomplete note or a general reference to Intrepid-class starships. (Sources SS and Communicator note Intrepid-class starships, as at 2370, a year before Janeway's Badlands mission, as having a standard crew complement of 150.)
    2. Kim says "over a dozen" were lost when Voyager was brought into the Delta Quadrant by the Caretaker, source [#154 Nightingale].
    3. Janeway: "There are 152 men and women on this ship." source [#20 The 37's]
    4. Janeway: "After being in the Collective, it wasn't easy for you to adjust to a ship with only 150 people on it, was it, Seven?" The number may well be a rounding-up or rounding-down. Source [#93 One]
    5. Janeway to Seven: "I can understand your reluctance. It's been hard enough dealing with a crew of 150 humans. The prospect of an entire planet must be overwhelming-" The number may well be a rounding-up or rounding-down. Source [#94 Hope And Fear]
    6. Doctor: "Well, 2 down, 125 to go." He is testing organic beings only and thus would exclude himself. Source [#98 In The Flesh]
    7. The Borg, as a probe scans Voyager: "Vessel identified. Federation Starfleet, Intrepid-class, 143 lifeforms." so this number excludes the Doctor. Source [#109 and #110 Dark Frontier].
    8. Neelix says: "We've only got four functioning lavatories for a ship of a 150 people." He may be rounding up or down. Either way, he would exclude the Doctor since waste extraction is one corporeal body function the hologram does not require. Source [#106 Bride Of Chaotica!]
    9. Neelix says there are 146 crew, source [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me].
    10. Torres says there are "140 humans" on board in addition to those of other species, source [#158 Lineage]. We know of the following of other species who, without report of their death, are alive at that time: three Bajorans, three Vulcans (two males, one female), one female Betazoid (possibly still alive), two Bolians and a Talaxian. There may be others.
    11. In [#166 Author Author] Neelix uses 146 isolinear chips, one for each member of the crew, presumably one for each person on board. From this, the final complement on board Voyager as the starship reaches Earth can be calculated i.e. 145 including the Doctor, since the death of Lieutenant Carey in [#167 Friendship One] and the arrival of baby Miral in the finale [#171 and #172 Endgame] cancel out.
  8. See body of this article for details of deaths or departures seen or referred to in particular stories. Due to the inconsistencies in stated crew numbers, it must logically be assumed (in order to try and attain plausible continuity) that others also die or depart or are on away missions. In [#148 Imperfection], a number of crew are listed as dead on the Astrometrics Lab viewscreen. We know the list displayed is only part of the list so we do not know how many more crew could be listed, which would provide a much-needed continuity between inconsistent statistics.
