Torres began work in Engineering. She had an altercation with the acting Chief Engineer, Joe Carey, and injured him. Torres refused Chakotay's demand that she bond with Joe Carey. Chakotay told her she'll need the support of men like Joe Carey if she is to be Chief Engineer. Chakotay recommended to Janeway that Torres be promoted over Carey as she was a better engineer, and recommended to Janeway that she get to know Torres first before deciding. Torres helped solve the problem of how Voyager could escape an event horizon, and Janeway promoted her to Chief Engineer. Torres and Carey were reconciled. [#3 Parallax]

As Torres knows more about how the Doctor's mobile emitter works (it is 29th century technology), she is responsible for maintaining or repairing it. As a result she accompanied the Doctor on an away mission that nearly cost her her life, depicted in [#73 Revulsion] and described in Part B.
Dilithium extraction is a specialty [#138 Ashes to Ashes]. She was searching for dilithium, accompanied by Harry Kim, when she crashed on a planet inhabited by a pre-warp civilisation [#142 Muse].
