NOTES and SOURCES
- I use the terms "co-creators", "co-producers", "co-executive producers", "the producers" and "the writers" to refer to the team of Rick Berman, Jeri Taylor and Michael Piller.
- Sources: Poe, ST DVD, TOSTW, Encyclopaedia, ST Monthly, ST:M, STTNG Tech. Supplementary material by me. Certain opinions are mine; I do not ask anyone to agree with them. I recommend these sources highly. I have used the source Poe a great deal, though substantially edited and précised and supplemented. Poe's illustrated book has very substantially more content, depth and detail than this article. I definitely recommend Poe, in particular if you are interested in behind-the-scenes information about [Star Trek Voyager]'s inception and creation. See SOURCES & STANDARD ABBREVIATIONS which includes purchase information and my personal reviews for all these sources.
- I originally gave the subsection headings the names of [Star Trek Voyager] episodes to avoid calling them 1, 2, 3 etc. too early on. As with most of my articles, subsections were not created in the order they ended up in and, judging from experience, it would be a way of avoiding continually renumbering them. I have kept the subsection headings as I am fond of [Star Trek Voyager]'s episode titles so I suppose I have kept them for sentiment, and one or two I really could not resist e.g. it was happy coincidence that [Thirty Days] was available, not [Thirty-one Days], to describe the concept development work that took place in September 1993.
This use of [Star Trek Voyager] episode names, over the time it took to compile the article (it felt like a long time), obviously got to me as by the end I was, to myself only, crazily ascribing episode names to everything e.g. there are descriptions in Poe (not included here) about the exhausting and punishing hours the [Star Trek Voyager] staff and actors work, which I thought could be headed 'Shattered'.
Each subsection heading is accompanied by a brief description, and the pages themselves generally have a description at the top or else a table of contents.
(In addition, 'Conceiving [Star Trek Voyager]' can be searched using the site search engines - at any time click the link in the top right frame.)
- Information about 'Seinfield' is from Poe; that about 'Friends' is by me from 'Friends' sourcebooks (I am a 'Friends' fan).
Incidentally, Brent Spiner who plays Data in Star Trek, and who is mentioned in [#29 Prototype], guest-stars in a 'Friends' Series 10 episode. Actors who appear in [Star Trek Voyager] and in 'Friends' include Michael Ensign ([#47 False Profits]) and Christopher Liam Moore ([#65 Distant Origin]).
- Services available at Paramount Pictures, and stage layouts - from Paramount Pictures.
- Pictures of Paramount Studios are from the Web. They are on lots of websites - in search engines search "paramount studio".
- Page background, from the set Get Gold, by Eos Development.
- Lined paper which appears as background to production staff memos is from Jay Boersma, who says his webpaper is "approved by trees" (grin).
If you have a browser which does not support Cascading Stylesheets (CSS) i.e. an old browser (upgrade here), but have support for JavaScript, it is unlikely also that you can easily read 'Conceiving [Star Trek Voyager]' or indeed this site, but if you cannot see the text in the memos, invoke your browser's Select All command or use your mouse to select the memo content - that should make it visible. For that and other tips see SITE TIPS.
- To make the 'Conceiving [Star Trek Voyager] title image I used the following: screenshots of Piller, Taylor and Berman from ST DVD; USS Voyager from a Star Trek calendar or magazine; Voyager crew (Kes era) from a Star Trek postcard/publicity shot. Concept and other artwork by me.
