I'm Richard Sternbach. I've worked on Star Trek for a number of years as senior illustrator. Let me show you some of the designs and sketches that were produced during the seven years of [Star Trek Voyager].
The Voth were an interesting concept. If dinosaurs had gotten off Earth under their own power, what would they have turned into and what sorts of ships would they be flying?

And as it turned out their ships were a much different style than Starfleet, and we tried to do that a lot, to keep the visuals distinct. The Voth had a very interesting curvilinear style. Even if Voyager had some curves in it, the Voth were really curvy. Their exploratory ship was very interesting. Their city ship was another design style altogether and it turned out to be quite a thought-provoking idea to have these evolved dinosaurs flying their own starships.
