![]() click to enlarge | The following actresses and actors have appeared in [Voyager] and the totally unconnected USA series Murder, She Wrote (mid-1980s with pilot in 1984, into mid-1990s, and winner of four Golden Globes), a detective series. It stars London-born actress Angela Lansbury as Jessica Beatrice Fletcher, from the seaside town of Cabot Cove in Maine in the United States of America. She becomes a best-selling detective-story writer following her husband Frank's death, and shows herself to be a talented sleuth in solving real-life murders. As well as some travelling around the country visiting friends and also in connection with her books (book publicity tours etc.), in later series J.B. Fletcher takes up a part-time teaching post in New York, thereby expanding the scope of murder scenarios.

This is a wholly self-indulgent article. The lists are not comprehensive. They are the ones that I immediately spotted when I saw them in the credits of Murder, She Wrote while watching the DVDs and re-runs on television in 2007, as I am attuned to certain Star Trek actresses' and actors' names. There may be others I have missed. I could look them up systematically at imdb.com but that would spoil the fun I have in spotting them while watching the murder stories. Postscript: Some time after composing this article, I did look up at imdb.com in order to learn the title of the voodoo story (it was called Season 12: Big Easy Murder, more on this below), whereupon I discovered that Robert Beltran (plays Chakotay in [Voyager]) appears in two stories, so I have added him as he is a member of the [Voyager] ensemble cast; so far I do not believe I have seen his two stories, though I may have done if they were aired years ago. At the same time my eye caught a few other recognisable actors' names so I have included those too. I am waiting for the relevant Murder, She Wrote season DVDs to be released, which occurs first in the USA and months later in non-USA countries.
| My favourite 'Murder, She Wrote' story is Season 3: The Corpse That Flew First Class because the guest-stars include Kate Mulgrew (in flattering white costume) (I have not yet seen the other two stories in which she guest-stars) and John S. Ragin who played Dr Astin in another of my favourite shows, the USA detective series 'Quincy, M.D.' Actor Robert Ito, who plays John Kim, Harry Kim's father, in [#166 Author Author] played Sam, Quincy's assistant, and that series was one which Jeri Taylor worked on, long before she became a co-creator and co-producer of [Voyager]. Robert Ito, incidentally, also plays Chang, Starfleet officer in charge of Starfleet Academy entrance examinations at the Starfleet facility on planet Relva VII in [TNG: Coming of Age]. Another guest-star in Season 3: The Corpse That Flew First Class is Robert Walker who played Charlie in [TOS: Charlie X]. | ![]() |

Kate Mulgrew guest-stars in Season 3: The Corpse Flew First Class.
These pictures differ from those accessible in the information table above.
| Coincidentally, in Murder, She Wrote Sheriff Amos Tupper of Cabot Cove is played by Tom Bosley who appeared regularly in the USA sit-com 'Happy Days'. Don Most, another regular of that sit-com, also guest-stars in Murder She Wrote (see above) and as Dr Kadan in [#162 and #163 Workforce].
The father of Phil Morris, who plays Lieutenant John Kelly in [#128 One Small Step], is Greg Morris who is well-known as Barney in 'Mission: Impossible', and Greg Morris guest-stars in Season 1: Lovers And Other Killers. 'Mission: Impossible' is mentioned in [#50 and #51 Future's End] and is a show in which a number of Star Trek actresses and actors have also appeared, notably Leonard Nimoy (plays Spock in Star Trek) who was a member of the ensemble cast for a time. In addition, in Season 1: Lovers And Other Killers, both Greg Morris and Peter Graves are guest-stars, and Peter Graves was, commencing Season 2, the lead member of the 'Mission: Impossible' cast. Coincidentally, Griffith Observatory was used as a filming location in a 'Mission: Impossible' story (opening only) and in [#50 and #51 Future's End] - see PERSONAL LOG entry for the latter episode for details and pictures. |

Murder, She Wrote screenshots are from my DVD collection published by Universal Studios. Star Trek screenshots are, as ever, from my ST DVD collection, published by Paramount/Viacom. |
There must be a certain but recognisable quality about Murder, She Wrote because, without a tv guide that week and therefore ignorant of programme schedules, I switched on BBC1 Scotland one Sunday afternoon in September 2007 from idle curiosity. There was a scene in which two women were talking about being frightened of a voodoo scene they were watching and I thought "I wonder if this is a Murder, She Wrote!" It was about voodoo, which gave me doubts, but then someone mentioned "Jessica" and then Angela Lansbury walked in, as Jessica Fletcher. That story, called Season 12: Big Easy Murder, included a street scene shot on the "European street" lot, which was the setting for the holographic villages of Sainte-Claire in [#86 and #87 The Killing Game] and of Fair Haven in [#131 Fair Haven] and [#137 Spirit Folk], with the Murder, She Wrote action taking place near the bottom of the steps which, in the latter two [Voyager] episodes, represents the steps leading up to the entrance of Sullivan's pub. Murder, She Wrote Seasons 10 and 11 were shown, watched by a million viewers, on BBC1 at 2.35 p.m. on weekdays in spring and early summer 2007, though suspended for the fortnight of the Wimbledon tennis tournament. I had not seen those stories before. It was replaced by a medical drama such that there were two medical drama shows, one right after the other. I am writing my own whodunnit story called 'The Murder Of The Stupid TV Programme Controller', which has one million suspects. Postscript: It proved to be a hiatus, as showing resumed with the final season, Season 12, nearly three months later. If you have not already seen Murder, She Wrote it is an enjoyable series - easy-watching and family-rated. There are also four made-for-tv films. In some countries the (translated) title varies e.g. in Germany it is Every Time She Wrote A Crime Novel or Murder Is Her Hobby, in Finland Murder Became True, in Japan Aunt Jessica's Case Files, in Italy The Lady In Yellow and so on. |
My husband who frequently finds me watching a Murder, She Wrote story (when he is not watching one with me), once protested that the crime is always murder. I replied that the series Slightly Wounded, She Wrote was a flop, so the writers thought again.
Postscript: the series is being shown, apparently in complete episode and series order, from early Spring 2008 on BBC2 at 3 p.m. every weekday, although suspended from time to time for live coverage of national and international sports events. Between and since the interruptions for Wimbledon and the Olympics, the precise time of airing varies a little. I do usually try to catch it on television, even though I own the DVDs of most of the seasons, and will update this page as necessary.
