KATE MULGREW AS ADMIRAL JANEWAY IN [STAR TREK: NEMESIS]

In [Star Trek: Nemesis], set in 2378, after the end of 2377 when USS Voyager arrived back in the Alpha Quadrant, Admiral Kathryn Janeway (notice she is wearing the current Starfleet uniform at last) gives Captain Jean-Luc Picard his orders. Sources ST Monthly and Communicator. Admiral Janeway is actually seen only on Picard's portable computer screen.

Kate Mulgrew got the opportunity to play Janeway yet again when Star Trek executive producer Rick Berman asked her to shoot a cameo for [Star Trek: Nemesis]. The actress spent one day playing Admiral Janeway, as opposed to Captain Janeway.
KATE MULGREW: I was delighted to get that call. I was delighted to be giving Captain Picard [Patrick Stewart] his orders, as I had long wanted to do. Rick phoned me and said, 'I'd love you to come in and do this cameo for us. Can you do it?' I said yes. It was that simple. And it really wasn't a day on set. It was more like one hour, maybe two max. I was on a sound stage and Patrick Stewart was off-camera, and the scene was basically me telling him what to do. It was very fast. It was extremely organised. Rick Berman came down to the set and Patrick was, as always, very gracious. And that was it. I had to get on a plane in a matter of hours, so it was very fast and it was very satisfying. The shot itself was just me. It was just me on one little set. Captain Picard's not in the shot with Captain Janeway.

But did getting a promotion in rank change her approach to Janeway?
KATE MULGREW: It was interesting; the uniform I put on was Admiral Janeway's uniform, not Captain Janeway's. There is a difference. It's not just a uniform to me. You've got to understand, these kinds of specifics are very important to the actor. Certainly, I am no longer the captain on the intrepid [sic.] vessel that had been lost in space for so long. I am now the admiral - well and truly grounded and in a position of high command. So as the actress, even just for that hour or two I was there, I tried to take it to another level.

So what are the odds of Mulgrew putting on her uniform - be it Captain Janeway's or Admiral Janeway's - at some point in the future? It is not out of the realm of possibility that Janeway could turn up in a subsequent feature that includes charactrs from all the Star Trek incarnations. It is also not out of the realm of possibility that Paramount Pictures might one day reunite the [Star Trek: Voyager] cast for a television movie.
KATE MULGREW: I've said this before and I stand by it: it's all speculative that I would put on a uniform again. It was speculative before I put on a uniform for [Star Trek: Nemesis] and it's speculative again now. If, in fact, they would consider doing a [Star Trek Voyager] movie I would be very happy to talk to them about doing that. But as I say, it's all speculative at this point. I am open to it. I am certainly open to it. Source of interview extract: ST Monthly

source ST:IAWActress Kate Mulgrew appears in this Starfleet admiral's costume but is seen only from the shoulders up on Picard's computer screen, but the costume is complete with a uniform jacket, a command red undershirt, black trouser trousers with stirrups for boots, and a leather belt with a metal Starfleet Command buckle.

I have sat in Picard's chair, at 'Star Trek: The Exhibition' in London in January 2003, thanks to the generosity of the Exhibition staff. The desk was minus the screen, and there was just a hole where the screen would have come up. Without stage lighting the desk and chair seemed mundane, and it is obviously the lighting, extra props, special effects and of course the actors which, put all together, made the scene believable.
