BRAXTON'S MOTIVE AND ILLNESS

One individual who suffers from temporal psychosis is Captain Braxton, none other than the captain of the aforementioned Timeships Aeon and Relativity. His mind is unable to cope with the stresses of his job and he roundly blames Kathryn Janeway for his problems, which he cites as: "Thirty years of exile on 20th century Earth, the temporal inversion in the Takara sector - three violations that I had to repair!" He describes the inhabitants of the Earth time period in which he spent three decades as "post-industrial barbarians" and one of its policemen as a "quasi-Cardassian totalitarian", and during his exile he rants that he was institutionalised: "Do you know that once they put me in a mental institution and filled me with primitive pharmaceuticals?!"

That exile was caused when Braxton was despatched by the Temporal Integrity Commission in the small Federation craft, the Timeship Aeon, to contact USS Voyager in the Delta Quadrant: "Your vessel is responsible for a disaster in my century. A temporal explosion that will destroy all Earth's solar system. I've come back in time to prevent that occurrence. My mission is your destruction. You must not resist." He explains that debris from Voyager's hull had been discovered in the aftermath of a cataclysmic explosion which destroys Earth and its solar system in the 29th century. Janeway, however, refuses to co-operate on the basis of such a short conversation, and both Voyager and Captain Braxton are pulled through the temporal rift toward Earth in the past. Braxton arrives first, crashlanding in 1967 in the High Sierra mountain range of North America.

Voyager arrives three decades later and goes into orbit of Earth in 1996. Although Braxton manages an emergency beam-out, his problems worsen when the Aeon is found by someone else first, by one Henry Starling, a native who realises the potential of the Aeon's advanced technology and exploits it to found and head a successful international computer company. Starling locates the headquarters of his company, named Chronowerx as a nod to its origins, in Los Angeles. Braxton, however, is unable to get anywhere near to Starling due to the latter's gathered wealth and influence, and instead Braxton's status deteriorates to that of a tramp on the streets of Los Angeles. When Voyager arrives in 1996, away teams discover Braxton's circumstances. He has not been idle, for from the Aeon's chronometric data taken as his ship travelled to Earth, and taking Starling's theft of Aeon into account, he theorises to Janeway: "Ah, yes, when the explosion first happened, my sensors recorded a whole variety of chronometric data. The pulses were highly chaotic. At first I thought it was a warp core implosion, but then I found debris from Voyager and my theory seemed to be confirmed. It was you. But then someone here stole my timeship and it started to dawn on me. If someone were to fly my timeship into the future without recalibrating the temporal matrix then that could cause the kind of explosion that I witnessed in the 29th century! No, no, I reconstructed all the chronometric data as best I could remember it and it proved I was right. My ship causes the catastrophe."

as a beggar and social outcast, Braxton explains his theory to Janeway and Chakotay, [Future's End]

Voyager away teams manage to prevent Starling's journey to the 29th century by destroying him as he tries to pilot the Aeon there. Accordingly, the timeline is restored, at least mostly. Braxton appears in the Aeon and contacts Voyager, saying: "The Temporal Integrity Commission detected your vessel over 20th century Earth. I was sent to correct that anomaly. Prepare to follow me back into the rift. I'm returning you to your own time, to your previous co-ordinates in the Delta Quadrant."

Voyager co-operates and is therefore returned to the Delta Quadrant accordingly. However, certain aspects of the crew's adventures remain, such as the 29th century mobile emitter which Starling employed to make his prisoner, the Doctor, able to move around without the need for holo-emitters. It seems that Braxton, though correct when he says "I never experienced that timeline", knows that his three decades on Earth took place.

The above events, together with the Voyager-related temporal incursion in the Takara sector, lead Braxton to resent Voyager and in particular Janeway. In the Takara incident, when Voyager crashes on an L-class ice planet in the Beta Quadrant all the crew are killed except Chakotay and Kim who later change history so that the crash does not occur - this is depicted in [#100 Timeless].

Braxton's feelings are expressed when he tells Seven about what he calls "the Janeway Factor": "That woman has been responsible for three major temporal incursions. And who do you think had to repair the damage? Me. She's reckless, she has no regard for the integrity of the timeline. I asked for her help once. She refused and I ended up stranded in the late 20th century. Have you ever been to that time frame? Well, I don't recommend it. After three decades with those post- industrial barbarians I had to go through extensive rehabilitation before I could return to duty. Avoid contact with Janeway."
