Henry Starling, [Future's End]
Chronowerx logo, source Encyclopaedia20th century business tycoon Henry Starling is one of the most successful manufacturers in his era, specialising in computer technology. The secret of his success, however, comes in the form of a crashed 29th century Federation timeship, the Aeon, which he salvaged in 1967 and whose component technology he has managed to reverse-engineer. The resulting computer technology is far in advance of its time, therefore, and has placed and maintained Starling as one of the wealthiest men on Earth and his company, Chronowerx, one of the most powerful. As a private in-joke, Starling named his company with the "chrono" as a nod to the origins of its products ("chrono" is from the Greek meaning "time"), and even adopted the Federation insignia as the Chronowerx company logo, which is displayed on the front of the building both almost near its base on the entrance portico and at the top.

Commensurate with his status and that of his company, Starling has his headquarters building in the centre of Los Angeles, on the Pacific east coast, in southern California, in the United States of America. The sleek and elegant building is one of the few skyscrapers there at the time, and towers above many of the others. Starling's penthouse office therefore has the advantage of an impressive clear panoramic view of the surroundings. The building consists of an Art Deco-style lower section suporting an upper section of 20 floors. A massive metal version of the Chronowerx symbol has been installed as mentioned above, including the distinctively written "X" of Chronowerx.

Another screenshot of the building's exterior is shown right.

Below 2 pictures: Rain and Paris arrive in her camper van at the Chronowerx headquarters on an approach to the car park; and a large lorry, driven by Dunbar, starts to leave the car park.

timeship Aeon at Chronowerx
Starling keeps the stolen timeship Aeon in a large hangar-size workshop/laboratory facility adjacent to his penthouse office. He can look down at the timeship through a window from his office when he wishes, but the window is normally screened by a map of the world. The workshop is labelled "Chronowerks", which is wordplay on the company name "Chronowerx".

articleBehind-the-scenes: Ships of the Delta Quadrant: Timeship Aeon

Below are screenshots and text description of Starling's office interior as at 1996 when Janeway and Chakotay visit it, having, along with ship and crew, been pulled into a temporal rift (the same one that affected the Aeon) and brought back in time to Earth. However, Voyager arrives, not in 1967, but in 1996. For a description of events, beam to Episode Synopsis.

Starling's many-windowed office gives its owner a good view over Los Angeles.

Occupying half of the wall opposite the windows, set within an alcove, is a frosted glass depiction of the world which is backlit.

The other half of the wall extends back into the room, and displays a three-dimensional representation of the Chronowerx company logo located immediately by the office's entrance.

Dave is the secretary or personal assistant to Henry Starling the C.E.O. of Chronowerx. Dave is meant to prevent his boss being disturbed by telephone calls etc. while he (his boss) is in a meeting.

The Security Chief's name is Dunbar, and he reports only and directly to Starling. His official duties include acting as chauffeur to Starling. If so ordered, his unofficial duties involve skulduggery, and he is the only person to whom Starling has, of necessity, confided the existence and true nature of the stolen timeship Aeon.

door security device active
Beside this there is a wall-mounted light-beam security device which, however, Janeway and Chakotay are able to neutralise using 24th century technology so that they can break into the office at night.

Opening the door after deactivating the intruder security devices.

Outside side of the office door (which is green) and view into area outside which includes a wall uplighter; possibly this is Dave's domain (Dave is Starling's secretary)

The side wall into the alcove contains a cocktail "cabinet" table unit with a water jug and cocktail shaker. Starling pours himself some water after his throat goes dry upon receiving news via a telephone call from astronomer Rain Robinson that what he has feared has just happened - visitors from the future have arrived, he believes doubtless to claim the timeship Starling stole.

note the telescope and the topiary on the balcony outside, wall-mounted uplighters, and the geometric pattern on the windows; the same pattern is on the top of the balcony's balustrade seen in a screenshot below

The only other framed artwork in the office is an abstract piece reminiscent of the late 20th century artist Keith Haring.

Starling's high status is indicated by the large size of his office. The distance between his glass-topped conference table and his own desk if a full dozen paces, for instance. The office is bright and airy, and doubtless also air-conditioned, with an emphasis on comfort. Starling dresses casually, in jeans and casual top, in contrast to the business suit worn by Jim from a lesser computer company; Starling wears a not very formal jacket but he takes this off after receiving important news from Rain Robinson. The conference table is surrounded by a leather couch and three leather armchairs, and it is situated beside the windows. The office is carpeted from wall to wall in a uniform shade of grey.
