Janet meets Leonardo da Vinci 1
- Leonardo gains a patron

Leonardo: "Salue. Scisne Latine? Studeo Latine tecum loqui, si modo tibi est otium et si uis."
Greetings. Do you know Latin? I would like to speak with you in Latin, if you have the time and inclination.

Janet: "Aue, bone uir. Haud multum scio at metuo ne uitiose loquar quod in schola Latine didici neque uero bona usus sum institutione."
Greetings, sir. I know a little but I make mistakes, because I learned Latin at school but the teaching was poor.

Leonardo: "Satis recte loqueris. Age sis Latine colloquamur. Asside quaeso. Licetne apponere uinum, rubrum an candidum?"
You're speaking it fine. Let's talk in Latin. Please find a seat. Would you like some wine, red or white?

Janet: "Equidem utroque iuxta delector, gratias.
I like both equally, thanks.

Leonardo: "Hic est - huius anni."
Here it is - this year's new wine.

Janet: "Bene facis. Illa potio maxima est a me uisa. Uuuuuuuu! Hic!"
Thank you. That's the largest drink I've ever seen. Oooooooo! (Vintage 1506!) Hic!

Leonardo: "Ego te mihi obuium fieri gaudeo, amica Catarinae."
How nice to meet you, Catarina's friend.

Janet: "Catarina tibi salutem iusserat dicere."
Kathryn has asked me to pass on her best wishes.

Leonardo: "Saluae sit! Cedo, quid me uis faciam? Re vera, potas bene."
Bless her! Well, what can I do for you? I say, you sure are drinking a lot.

Janet: "Ego te fortasse occupatum seriis negotiis interpello?"
Perhaps I'm bothering you while you're busy with some serious matter?

Leonardo: "Immo maxime uacuum. Immo opportune te huc attulisti. Iam me ceperat otii taediuim."
No, I've nothing to do. No, you've come at a good time. I was beginning to feel bored.

Janet: "Sed......tu pingis?"
But...you're painting?

Leonardus: "Ego sum pictor, nondum ulli me plane addixi. Ego feminam paulatim pingo."
I'm a painter, though I have not committed myself to one particular subject. I'm in the process of painting the portrait of a woman.

Janet: "Quo nomine?"
What's her name?

Leonardo: "Mona Lisa."

Janet: "Licetne uidere picturam?!"
Can I see the picture?!

Leonardo: "Ea est."
There she is.

Janet: "Omnino mirabile fit!"
Totally awesome!

Leonardo: "Vero? Plurimum eam in rem temporis permultum et operae insumpsi et maritus multam pecuniam mihi debet. haec res mihi constat pecunia. Eheu! uniuersae pecuniae naufragium feci. Dux Mediolanum erat meum patronum sed captus in uincula est. Nisi forte sic erat in fatis meis. Saepe me pudet prodire in publicum cum uideo quam culti sint alii. Esurio, et uacuus mihi uenter crepitat. O me miserum!"
Really? It's already cost me much time and effort and her husband owes me a lot of money. This business costs me an incredible amount. Alas! all my money's gone. The Duke of Milan was my patron but he's a prisoner in chains. Fate has it in for me. I'm often ashamed to do go out in public when I see how well-dressed other people are. I'm starving and my stomach's rumbling. O how wretched I am!"

Leonardo, looking at Janet speculatively: "Aesne habes?"
Do you have any small change on you?

Janet: "Noli te macerare. Ero auxilio tibi. Cape hanc pecuniam, quinque librae Anglicae."
Don't take on so. I'll help you. Here's five quid.
(In British English, "quid" is slang for "pound".)

Leonardo: "Quid?"
What?

Janet: "Probe. Accipe."
That's right. Take it.

Leonardo: "Hui, tanti?! Sunt trecenties centena milia in nummi Italici! Unde habes?!
Wow, that much?! That's 30,000,000 in Italian currency! Where did it come from?!

Janet now realises that she miscalculated how much even just five pounds would have been worth in those days.

Janet: "Er.....Sortium beneficio accepi."
Er.....I won it in the Lottery.

Leonardo, hugging her: "Mea patrona noua!"
My new patron!

Janet: "Iubeo nunc te bene ualere, non te diutius remorabor."
I must say goodbye now, I don't want to keep you.

Leonardo: "Quo credbrius uenies eo mihi uenies gratior, mea patrona."
The more often you come, the more welcome you'll be, my patron.

Janet clicks her combadge: "Peregrinator, me transmitte sursum."
Voyager, beam me up.
