| On an away mission to locate nutritional supplements, Tuvok and Neelix find a promising native orchid. But when the crew beams them back to Voyager with samples of the flowers, the pair never arrive. Instead, a single entity appears on the transporter platform. The Doctor confirms that this strange but oddly familiar alien is actually a Tuvok and Neelix, formed by all of Tuvok's and Neelix's biological matter merging on a molecular level. The new crewmember decides to name himself "Tuvix", from both men's names. All Tuvix's vital signs are stable, and he has the memories and abilities of both men, but a single consciousness. Initial microcellular scans show no cause or method of separation. | ![]() Tuvix, after materialising on the transporter dais in Voyager's transporter room |
The senior officers meet and conclude that the symbiogenetic properties of the orchids carried during transport caused the "merger" which created Tuvix. After the meeting, Tuvix attempts to adjust to his new identity, and Kes tries to adjust to Tuvix. Although she is drawn to him, she is unsettled by the amalgam's affection for her.
Crew experiments to reverse the merger process, using more samples of the alien orchid, prove unsuccessful. The Doctor admits he is not optimistic about bringing Tuvok and Neelix back as separate individuals. On hearing this, Kes mourns the loss of two men: her lover Neelix and her mentor and friend Tuvok.
Kes tells Janeway that despite Tuvix's wonderful qualities, she is not ready to let go of Neelix. Meanwhile, Tuvix settles into life aboard the ship. In time, Kes reaches out to him and apologises for being distant, and this scene takes place in the Chez Sandrine holoprogram.
| In the Chez Sandrine holoprogram, Tuvix is soundly beating Chakotay at pool. Tuvix is about to play and nominates: "Eight ball, corner pocket." He hits the white so that it hits the eight ball, making it roll straight into the corner pocket. "That's game again, Commander." | ![]() |
| Paris jokes to Chakotay: "We've created a monster."
Chakotay to Tuvix: "Best out of five?" Tuvix is about to accept when Kes enters and indicates with a head movement that she would like to talk to him. Tuvix goes over to Chakotay. "Would you mind if we finished this later, Commander? Chakotay, understanding that Kes wants to talk to him. "Not at all." | ![]() |
| Tuvix and Kes sit down at a table together.
Kes, a bit nervously: "Hi." Tuvix: "Hi. How have you been?" Kes: "Good days and bad days. You?" Tuvix: "Me too." Kes: "Listen, I'm sorry I've been so distant lately-" He interrupts. "Kes, you don't owe me an explanation." Kes: "I've been doing a lot of thinking, and I'm hoping that we can be friends." Tuvix: "I would like that very much." | ![]() |
| Kes: "And I'd like our friendship to grow." She places her hands on his.
Tuvix, welcoming the significance of the intimate gesture: "You would?" | ![]() |
| Kes: "Yes. But it's going to take time."
Tuvix smiles. "I'm not going anywhere." The com. signal sounds. "Doctor to Lieutenant Tuvix." Tuvix: "Tuvix here." Doctor, via comms: "Please report to Sickbay immediately." | ![]() |
Now, just as it seems everyone has adjusted to Voyager's new crewmember, the Doctor announces that he has devised a way to restore Tuvix to his two original components namely Tuvok and Neelix. But there is a problem: Tuvix does not want to die, even if it means allowing the other two men to live, and argues that he has a right to survive, and that restoring Tuvok and Neelix's lives amounts to his execution. The Doctor is programmed to do no harm and he refuses to perform the separation on an unwilling Tuvix. Janeway takes over and performs the procedure. Tuvok and Neelix are fully restored, but Janeway's relief is tempered by the weight of her decision to end Tuvix's life.
