ENTERING CHEZ SANDRINE

One can enter the holographic Chez Sandrine by several different means. One method is through the holodeck doors, to approach its exterior and enter through the main doors. Or one can enter directly into the interior of the bar upon activation of the holoprogram. The layout of Chez Sandrine is different by 2375, in [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me] as people arrive through a door at the far end from the bar, or alternatively when the program activates they are standing just inside the entrance, at the top of the stairs. That entrance is for the public, as people (whether holocharacters or real visitors cannot be known) leave through it, and Seven arrives in the already active program through it, i.e. it is not, say, a tradesman's entrance or staff access.

the approach to Chez Sandrine can be seen just inside the open holodeck doors, [#6 The Cloud]

the sign at the Chez Sandrine entrance reads "Chez Sandrine" and below that "à Marseilles"

After activating the program, in [#6 The Cloud], Paris takes Kim in through the holodeck doors which lead to the exterior frontage of the bar, complete with welcoming bar sign, and they enter through the main entrance which consists of a set of double doors whose upper halves are glazed with glass. They approach the entrance doors from the right.

an alien exits Chez Sandrine, then Paris and Kim enter, [#6 The Cloud]

As one enters through the main doors, the pool table is immediately and prominently visible, being the first large object that is seen on arrival. Its prominent position also gives those playing at the far end of the pool table (the head end) a clear view of everyone who arrives.

When, in [#19 Twisted], Kes arrives in holo-Sandrine's and is surprised there by the main crew with a party to mark her second birthday, she enters the same way as Paris and Kim in [#6 The Cloud] namely through the holodeck doors. At this time, there is an outdoor bench just inside the holodeck doors. However, on that occasion, she approaches holo-Sandrine's main entrance from the left. (This means that Kes' entrance in [#19 Twisted] is a blooper, being a lack of continuity as regards the direction people approach the bar entrance from as at other times in the episode people enter from the right if looking from the outside toward the entrance.)

By late 2375, in [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me], changes have been made to the holoprogram for the entrance moves 90° so that the place, on entering, looks long front to back rather than side to side as in earlier episodes. Unless someone informed Tom Paris about changes to the real Chez Sandrine in letters received from home in [#83 Hunters], and that is not even distantly borne out in the series, he cannot have known if the real Sandrine's had changed as regards layout or decor or furnishings. It is not indicated in the series whether the changes in [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me] are the result of re-programming by Tom Paris or by the Doctor, except that we know the Doctor replaced the pool table with a piano as Paris asks him: "Who deleted my pool table?" In that story, the Doctor has changed holo-Sandrine's into a piano bar and thereby altered the atmosphere to one condusive to romance, in order that Seven can be guided through the first of the practical exercises exploring dating rituals, 'Lesson 2: Encounter In A Public Place'. One change is the location of the main entrance to the bar. The previous main entrance now has tables placed close to it indicating that that entrance is no longer in use.

while with Seven on Holodeck 2, the Doctor activates the holoprogram, and they appear within the interior of the bar, and come down steps past the piano which the Doctor has programmed as a replacement for the pool table, [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me]

Seven enters the already active holoprogram for her date; a door to another part of Chez Sandrine can be seen in the righthand picture, which could possibly eventually lead to that entrance or at least leads to another part of Chez Sandrine which is not seen on the television screen, [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me]

as two people (holocharacters or real people is not indicated) leave, Neelix rushes into the bar looking for the Kadi ambassador named Tomin, and shortly afterwards takes the increasingly drunk and incoherent Tomin out of the bar by the same way, [#116 Someone To Watch Over Me]
