Episode Synopsis : Season 7
|
Somewhere in the Alpha Quadrant a Bajoran male called Teero Anaydis, with the religious rank of vedek, sits in a room whose walls are hung with Bajoran and Maquis items including a schematic of USS Voyager. Calling up pictures of Chakotay, Torres and Tuvok, Teero recites a Bajoran chant: "This is a holy time..."
In the Delta Quadrant, aboard Voyager, Paris surprises Torres with flowers and a trip to his new holoprogram - the re-creation of Chicago’s Palace Theater, built in 1932, a classic 20th century-style movie theatre. In Sickbay the Doctor reports that Tabor is in a coma and was physically attacked. Janeway appoints Tuvok, as chief of security, to investigate the case. Unusually for his normal Vulcan self, Tuvok insists that a member of the crew is responsible - it is a "hunch". As part of his investigation Tuvok visits Tabor's quarters where he meets Crewman Jor, a close friend of Tabor, who is there to take Tabor a book to read aloud to him to try and bring him out of his coma.
Later, in Engineering, Crewman Jor orders Crewman Yosa to check the seals in one of the Jefferies tubes. As Yosa makes his way along the crawlway, the lights go out and then suddenly someone approaches him while shining a bright light into his face. Feeling threatened, Yosa tries to escape but finds that the computer refuses to seal the hatch against the oncoming threat. Soon afterwards, we see Yosa in Sickbay, having been found by Crewman Jor - Yosa suffers identical attack injuries and is in a coma. When sent to interview Crewman Jor, Tuvok and Chakotay find her in the Messhall. She also has been attacked and is in a coma. Back in Sickbay Janeway and Chakotay realise that all the victims are former members of the Maquis.
On the Holodeck, in Paris' movie theatre simulation, Paris and Kim capture a vague negative image that the intruder left behind. They show Tuvok the results of their experiment so far: two humanoid figures - one is Tabor, slumped in his seat; the other is not recognisable so Tuvok orders them to work on increasing the resolution of the images. As he leaves the movie theatre, Tuvok looks oddly preoccupied. As part of his investigation Tuvok interviews everyone who received a letter from home in the latest Starfleet data transmission via the periodic comlink facilitated by the MIDAS Array. Tuvok has read the personal letters received by the 28 members of the crew who received mail. This is because the attacks started soon after the letters from home arrived. One of his interviewees is Kim. Tuvok notes that in the letter from Kim's cousin, Dennis Kim, there is mention of one Maxwell Soroyan, a friend of Kim's who was killed by the Maquis. As Kim protests his innocence, Tuvok becomes strangely perturbed. Chakotay finds that Chell's partner, Torres, insisted on looking after herself. Searching for her, Chakotay finds herself unconscious in Cargo Bay 2. Thus Torres and Chakotay become the latest victims of the mysterious "attacker". Meanwhile the other victims have woken up from their comas with no memory of what happened to them and without knowing the identity of the attacker. Tuvok continues the investigation, with no memory of attacking Chakotay or anyone else. Janeway insists that he return to his quarters to rest and meditate. While meditating Tuvok experiences disturbing flashback images of his victims - he sees them in Sickbay, Yosa in the Jefferies Tube and Chakotay in Cargo Bay 2. Tuvok goes into his bathroom to wash in cold water to try and clear his head, but notices a bruise and has flashback images of himself struggling with Chakotay in the cargo bay. Then suddenly he "sees" Teero's reflection in the mirror, yet there is no one in his quarters!
Filled with foreboding, Tuvok hurries to the Holodeck where Janeway and Kim are experimenting with the negative images. He ascertains from the computer that he, Tuvok, was in the movie theatre when Tabor was attacked, and that the attacker and himself are exactly 182 centimetres tall. This confirms his suspicions, and he informs Janeway that he, Tuvok, is the attacker and that he must be confined to the Brig for the safety of the crew. Suddenly Tuvok "sees" Teero and draws his phaser.
Meanwhile Chakotay calls Tuvok to the Captain's Ready Room. Chakotay tells him that he is not sure he can trust Tuvok, who betrayed the Maquis once before. Tuvok says it will not happen again and expresses willingness to mind-meld with the remaining Maquis in order to convey Teero's instructions. Chakotay has Janeway brought in, hands Tuvok his (Chakotay's) phaser and orders him to kill Janeway to prove his loyalty. Janeway speaks to Tuvok, trying to persuade him not to fire. But Tuvok fires the phaser. Once the rest of the Maquis crewmembers are returned to normal, Tuvok joins Janeway and other members of the crew in Paris' movie theatre for a double feature. Janeway asks him how he knew the phaser he was pointing at her was defective. Tuvok replies that Chakotay doubted his loyalty and so would not have given him a working phaser - it was a "hunch". Everyone puts on the 3D goggles as the movie, "The Attack of the Lobster People", begins.
