Long Synopsis Part 2

This is the Long Synopsis. Beam here for the Short Synopsis.

This covers Part 2 as aired on television.

Janeway and Seven encounter German soldiers in Voyager's corridors. They exchange fire and they and shoot the soldiers. They go to the Astrometrics Lab where internal scans of the Holodeck show that there are thirteen Hirogen on Holodeck 1. Needing allies of some kind to disable the rest of the neural interfaces, Janeway decides to enlist Chakotay/Captain Miller and the American forces in Sainte Claire.

In 'Le Coeur de Lion', Torres/Brigitte points out to Paris/Davis on a map the location of the Resistance's biggest stockpile of weapons, most of which they stole from the German army. The stockpile is under the last row of seats of the Cinema Mystère. Davis recalls that the movie he and Brigitte saw there was "I'm No Angel". She replies that it was "Death Takes a Holiday" but when he insists she believes he is right. Davis replies that when Mae West was singing "Sister Honky Tonk", he put his arm around her. They both remember their first kiss.

Janeway and Seven return to 'Le Coeur de Lion' via a Jefferies tube crawlway which Torres/Brigitte thinks is a secret tunnel. The other personae of course still believe the holo-scenario and that she is Katrine, leader of the Resistance.

Miller explains that Allied command believes the "bunker" is a secret munitions dump which must be destroyed. Janeway says she saw all kinds of equipment in them and that if Miller calls for an air-strike, "Could be the last call you make." She persuades him that she can blow up the generator inside the Nazi compound and thus save many lives. She says she has a man 'inside' and needs to contact him (she means Neelix).

Chakotay/Miller insists on going with her, leaving Paris/Davis in command of the new military base i.e. 'Le Coeur de Lion'. Before she leaves, Janeway warns Seven that if she (Janeway) does not return, Seven will be the only one on the Holodeck who knows what is really going on. Chakotay/Miller and Janeway enter the Jefferies tube.

Janeway tells Tuvok that Seven (whom he believes is de Neuf) is bona fide.

When the Doctor protests the Hirogen Medic's order to treat Hirogen wounded first, the Hirogen Medic deactivates him. He orders the Hirogen hunters in future to leave wounded prey where they fall and give priority to Hirogen injured.

While Miller and Janeway move through the Jefferies tubes, he remarks that she is "a gung-ho kind of gal". She takes him to meet Neelix in the Klingon simulation. She explains her contacts are an eccentric people who live in "caves". When Chakotay/Miller is challenged to drink Klingon bloodwine, she warns him not to drink it as it is twice as strong as whisky.

Janeway activates the Doctor who reports that all the neural interfaces are controlled through a console in Sickbay. She says she will blow up the console; when the Doctor queries the use of holographic explosives she points to her knapsack and says that with the safety protocols off they are as good as the real thing.

Brigitte, the barman and Davis defend 'Le Coeur de Lion'. The attacking Germans are led by the Nazi Kapitan and Turanj. The latter reports to Alpha Hirogen that he has them holed up in a building and needs reinforcements. Alpha Hirogen says Hirogen hunters are on the way.

Janeway and Miller go to the Jefferies tube below Sickbay, where Miller sets a timer at five minutes. They then go to Sickbay. They tell the Hirogen Medic that there are explosives underneath Sickbay due to go off in three minutes. On Janeway's instructions Miller takes the Hirogen Medic outside and guards him at gunpoint.

There is a level 9 force field around the surgical console in sick bay; Janeway shuts the forcefield down so that charges they are detonating will destroy the console. But Hirogen hunters arrive and Miller is subdued. The Hirogen Medic rushes into Sickbay and shoots Janeway in the leg. She hobbles out of Sickbay as fast as she can. The Hirogen Medic, forgetting that there are explosives set, finds he cannot access the neural interface controls as Janeway has locked him out of those controls.

The explosives go off, destroying the console that controlled the neural interfaces. The rest of the neural interfaces are disabled and the Voyager crew regain their real personalities, shaking off the Hirogen-induced personae.

German troops, led by the Nazi Kapitan, seize 'Le Coeur de Lion'. He thus discovers that Brigitte is a member of the French Resistance and her "flirtations" were a deception.

Alpha Hirogen orders Turanj to seal the hatch, and not to kill the Voyager crewmembers as they are needed as hostages to repair the Holodecks and damage to the ship.

Although the baby that Torres is carrying is just a holographic projection, it feels real enough, it even kicks. Tuvok does not recognise the simulation; Paris explains the Nazis were totalitarian fanatics on Earth during the Second World War - "the Borg of their day."

The Nazi Kapitan says the thought of her carrying his child disgusts him. He hits Torres across the face. Paris leaps to protect her. The Kapitan aims his pistol at Paris but eventually puts it away when Turanj orders him.

The Klingon warriors in the Klingon war simulation insist that Neelix lead them into battle and that the Doctor joins them. Neelix is concerned but the Doctor tells him, "Run along. I'll re-attach any severed limbs. Just don't misplace them." He follows Neelix, remarking: "Tally-ho."

Captain's Ready Room on Voyager, as adorned with Alpha Hirogen's grisly trophies consisting of remains of prey he has hunted and killed.

The captured Janeway is brought to the Captain's Ready Room for an interview with Alpha Hirogen. She remarks he has done some decorating. She refuses to help repair the Holodecks and says she and all her crew would die first. Alpha Hirogen explains his vision to her (as expressed to Turanj earlier): "Your people have faced extinction many times. But you've always managed to avoid it. You seem to recognise the need for change." Janeway says that she would be willing to let them have holographic technology if they release Voyager. Alpha Hirogen agrees and informs his hunters of the cease-fire. The way to end the simulations is to overload the holoemitters; Kim is given orders to do this.

Because of the ceasefire, Turanj releases the Voyager hostages. But the Nazi Kapitan tells him: "The Kommandant is a fool." He persuades (or else Turanj is only too willing to be persuaded) to mutiny, to be true to himself - Turanj is a hunter and leaves 'Le Coeur de Lion' to continue the hunt.

The Germans, commanded by the Nazi Kapitan, open fire on the Voyager crew.

The Doctor has been monitoring events on Holodeck 1 from the screen on Holodeck 2. Loud belching from the drunk and merry Klingons gives him an idea: "Even half-drunk, Klingons are the best warriors in the galaxy." He tells Neelix to persuade the Klingon warriors. Neelix starts by politely asking for their attention. The Doctor tells him: "They're Klingons, not kittens." Neelix grabs food from one of the Klingon's hands and flings it into the fire: "You will listen!"

In Engineering, Janeway and Alpha Hirogen consider the problem of repairing Voyager. Turanj enters and fells him with a shot; he shoots him again and kills him. He does not shoot Janeway because she is prey and he is a hunter. She hobbles out of Engineering as fast as possible.

Janeway flees, with Turanj in pursuit.

Kim initiates an overload of the holoemitters. The computer counts down from ten minutes.

When Seven is unable to hurl a Borg-enhanced grenade at the enemy, the grenade goes off and removes the crew's holographic American troops and holographic armaments. Accordingly, German troops overwhelm the defending Voyager crew. The Nazi Kapitan orders Chakotay: "Surrender!"

Still fleeing from Turanj, Janeway finds the corridor completely blocked and with Turanj hot on her heels. She notices there is a holographic soldier lying dead there, but part of his legs are missing where they intersect either a fault or where the holoemitters stop. She drags the soldier back into the area where the holoemitters are and the rest of his holographic legs materialise.

Janeway lures Turanj to her by pretending to beg for mercy. He approaches to the boundary of the holosimulation. His holographic rifle disappears. At that moment Janeway leaps out from behind some of the blocking debris and clouts him with a length of pipe. He falls and as he does so she picks up the holographic rifle. He scrambles to his feet and heads off. It is now Janeway who is the hunter and he the hunted.

The Nazi Kapitan orders his prisoners shot "for the glory of the Reich", all except Brigitte who says that he life is spared for the moment because she is carrying a German child. Just as he is about to give the firing squad the order to fire, Klingons arrive. The German soldiers turn to fight them.

Turanj reaches the hole in Holodeck 1 caused by the holo-explosion. Looking through it he sees down on the streets of Sainte Claire that a fierce battle is raging. Klingons, holographic American troops and Voyager crewmembers fight hand-to-hand in bloody battle with holographic German soldiers and Hirogen Hunters.

A Klingon fells the Nazi Kapitan. He watches his end come, in the form of a slice from a Klingon bat'leth.

Janeway corners Turanj. She tells him to order his men to stand down. But he starts furiously towards her. She shoots him and he falls over the edge into the Holodeck and is killed.

When the holoemitters overload the simulations end.

Because the conflict between Voyager's crew and the Hirogen is a stalemate, the remaining Hirogen agree a truce. Janeway offers the gift of an optronic data-core to honour a promise she made to the Hirogen leader before he died. With it they can have holographic technology of their own, or at the very least hang it on a bulkhead as a trophy. When she is told that their leader had "unconventional" ideas, she replies he was not the only one - they have made a truce with their prey and are negotiating with them. The Hirogen accept the gift and leave Voyager.

quote  JANEWAY to remaining Hirogen: "An optronic datacore - you can use it to create holodeck technology on your own vessels. I made a promise with your leader, before he died, that I would give this knowledge to the Hirogen. Take it. Was he any more unconventional than you are? Calling a ceasefire with your prey? Only a few days ago the thought of speaking with us on equal terms would've been inconceivable, but here we are. Accept this trophy. You can use it to create a new future for your people. At the very least, you can hang it on your bulkhead."
