SUMMARY: The Cataati demand charitable supplies from Voyager. When they seize Voyager's warp core, Torres and Paris face death together.
Torres is having a bad day. She has overslept, had a malfunction in her sonic shower, found two Engineering staff off sick forcing her to cancel the fuel cell overhaul. Paris is sympathetic. He asks if she intends to go through with the Klingon Day of Honour ritual, and she says she has not yet decided. In addition, Chakotay effectively orders her to work with Seven, whose past as a Borg she despises, to create a Borg-style transwarp conduit.
Voyager encounters a ship of eighty-nine Caatati refugees seeking food, medicine and a supply of thorium to power their systems. The Caatati leader Rahmin explains that most of their species were assimilated by the Borg over a year ago. Only a few thousand from the planet of millions escaped on thirty ships. Janeway has Rahmin send a list of their needs and supplies them.
By now Torres feels even less in the mood to go through the rigorous Klingon Day of Honor, an annual ritual of self-examination in which the celebrant examines their behaviour to see if they lived up to Klingon standards over the past year. The ceremony involves a lengthy ordeal including the Ritual of Twenty Painstiks, a bat'leth combat, and traversing the sulphurlagoons of Gorath. She begins the ceremony but gives up part-way through.
Afterwards Torres broods in her room. When Paris visits and tries to help she pushes him away, afraid to accept the comfort of his friendship.
Later, Voyager is accosted by three more Caatati ships carrying over two hundred people. Their leader, Lumas, puts pressure on Janeway to provide more supplies. When Tuvok asks if they have sought a planet to settle on and grow their own food, Lumas replies that they have not been welcome on any planet because they have no resources and are treated like vagrants. Janeway agrees to give them food and medical supplies. Lumas, who lost his wife and children to the Borg, is outraged when he sees that Voyager's crew includes a former Borg drone.
In Engineering, against the background of Torres' contempt and distrust, Seven continues working to open a transwarp conduit, in the hope that eventually they will be able to use one to travel swiftly to the Alpha Quadrant. The crew plan to create a transwarp conduit for only a short time to get as much sensor data as they can. However, during the first test of the modifications, an accident occurs when tachyons leak into the propulsion system and into the warp core to the point where it is likely to breach. Torres is forced to eject the warp core. At this point she feels this is the worst day of her life, but worse is to come.
Janeway orders Torres and Paris to take a shuttlecraft and retrieve the warp core which is millions of kilometres away. Because of their earlier argument, the atmosphere in the shuttlecraft Cochrane is tense.
They locate the warp core, but there is a Caatati ship salvaging it.
They warn the Caatati off, but the aliens fire at the shuttlecraft and collapse its structural integrity field. Torres and Paris manage to don environmental suits and beam into space just before the Cochrane explodes. By linking the communication systems in both of their space suits, they create a carrier wave that they hope will reach Voyager before they run out of air. One of the environmental suits is damaged by random ion turbulence, resulting in them having to share a limited supply of oxygen, reducing the chances that Voyager will find them in time.
Voyager picks up the carrier wave from Torres and Paris, but before they can retrieve them, an armada of twenty-seven Caatati ships arrive with Voyager's warp core. Lumas threatens to destroy Voyager unless Janeway gives them food, weapons and her entire supply of thorium, as well as hand over Seven. Despite knowing that the Caatati intend to take vengeance on her for their Borg-inflicted suffering, Seven volunteers to go, but Janeway refuses, telling her she is part of the group now and will be protected.
With the crisis over, Voyager is able to head for Paris and Torres. Facing death within moments, Torres finds the courage to admit to Paris that she loves him. With that courage she finds her honour. Then Voyager arrives and rescues them. The worst day of her life turns into one of the best.
