Third Magistrate Augris.Augris, a senior Mokra magistrate, talks with Chakotay, first via bridge viewscreen then in Voyager's Briefing Room. Chakotay requests the return of the missing crew members, but when it is clear the Mokra intend to be obstructive he decides to formulate a rescue plan.

Torres with Tuvok after he is returned to the cell after being tortured.Augris visits the prison cell in which Torres and Tuvok are being detained. Augris demands the names of their contacts in the Alsaurian resistance. Tuvok is removed for questioning and is later returned to the cell, having been tortured. Torres is unable to find any way of escape from the cell.

Caylem. In Caylem's home, Janeway regains consciousness to find that Caylem has treated her wound. He believes she is his daughter. She learns that Torres and Tuvok have been taken to the Mokra's escape-proof and impenetrable prison. Caylem insists on giving Janeway his wife's necklace, believing Janeway to be their daughter. Hoping to find his long-imprisoned wife, Caylem asks Janeway if he can accompany her there. He gives her his wife's necklace. Janeway refuses, but the discussion is interrupted when Mokra soldiers arrive in a house-to-house hunt for her. The pair slip out of Caylem's home seconds before the soldiers burst in.

Janeway and Caylem visit Darod to ask him for help in obtaining weapons so that they can break into the prison. While they wait for him to return home, they see him arriving only for him to be apprehended by Augris and a Mokra patrol. Spontaneously, to distract the Mokra while Darod slips away, Caylem plays the lunatic fool in front of Augris. After the Mokra leave, Darod agrees to give Janeway weapons in exchange for the necklace, and tells them when to meet their contact. He warns her that Caylem is known as a coward who will probably get her killed.

Caylem allows Augris to humiliate him
in order to facilitate Darod's escape.

Janeway, accompanied by
Caylem, asks Darod for weapons.

Unable to dissuade Caylem from accompanying her despite warning him of the dangers, Janeway continues to the meeting with Darod's contact. As they wait for the contact, Caylem elaborates on Darod's accusation: it was Caylem's fault that his wife and daughter, who were members of the Alsaurian resistance, were arrested. When the 'contact' shows up, Janeway notices just in time that he is wearing military boots - it is a trap. They avoid the 'contact' and she realises that she must forego the weapons. Instead she resorts to guile and disguises herself as a street girl to distract and disable two guards protecting the prison's access tunnels.

Caylem confesses to Janeway why
the Alsaurians consider him to be a coward.

Janeway, disguised as a goodtime girl,
breaks into the prison.

Janeway gets into the prison, re-erecting the security forcefield so as to leave Caylem safe outside.

Meanwhile, Voyager comes under hostile fire by the Mokra, and the ship is ordered to leave the area immediately.

Janeway disconnects the power to the prison's security net, which frees Tuvok and Torres. On Voyager, Paris argues that this is the best opportunity to take a rescue team into the prison. Before Janeway finds her missing crewmen, she finds Darod, and then unexpectedly comes across Caylem who says he could not leave his daughter to conduct the search for his wife alone. But they are captured by Augris, who reveals that Caylem's wife and daughter are dead.

Janeway meets up with Tuvok and Torres.

Caylem is taunted by Augris with the fact
the Mokra killed Caylem's wife and daughter.

Overcome by grief and guilt, Caylem stabs the magistrate dead, but takes a fatal phaser shot from a prison guard. As Caylem lies dying, Janeway plays the role of his daughter and assures him that both she and her mother forgive him.

above: Caylem stabs Augris.

right: Janeway makes sure that Caylem
dies at peace with himself.

Moments later, Paris arrives and the entire away team beams back to the ship.

Later, in her Ready Room, Janeway reflects on the events that led to the death of her temporary adoptive father. She holds the gift he gave her - his wife's necklace.
