SUMMARY: Culluh of the Kazon-Nistrim has a new advisor who enables him to steal technology from Voyager, technology that Chakotay feels personally obliged to retrieve.
as a Kazon ship attacks Voyager, a small Kazon ship flies toward Voyager at high speed |
To the surprise of the Voyager crew, sensors pick up a transmission with a Federation signal. Hoping that Starfleet launched a probe to search for them, Janeway lays in a course toward the signal. A Kazon ship ambushes them and under covering fire a smaller vessel penetrates Voyager's shields and hull. Intruders gain access to the starship, steal a transporter module and beam away to their own ship. |

Janeway informs the Kazon leader, Culluh, that the module is useless without Federation know-how, but Culluh reveals his trump card - his advisor is Seska, a former Voyager officer and Cardassian spy. The implications of Seska's alliance with Culluh are clear - the Kazon can now call on someone with Starfleet, Maquis and Cardassian tactical experience. Now that she has joined forces with the Kazon there is no reason for her to retain her Bajoran disguise and she is in the process of reverting to her true Cardassian physiology.

Culluh plans to use the stolen module, which Seska has successfuly integrated into his ship's systems, to persuade rival sects to join forces with him to seize Voyager and thus capture a mighty power base and more new technology.

To demonstrate his new-found power, Culluh beams an enemy rival Maje and his aide into space using the transporter module, then issues a summons to other Majes interesting in exploiting the stolen technology and capturing Voyager.

Meanwhile, Voyager crew recover the Kazon bodies floating in space and Neelix, who is able to identify the bodies thanks to his knowledge of the region, helps the crew to deduce Culluh's plans.

Chakotay tells Torres he feels responsible for Seska's actions because he recruited her into the Maquis, and later he appropriates a shuttlecraft and leaves Voyager to go after the device alone. Torres pleads mitigation for Chakotay's flouting of orders but Janeway is both sympathetic and unsympathetic, but she adds that they should concentrate on first retrieving Chakotay before deciding his punishment.

Chakotay is able to beam undetected from the cockpit of his shuttlecraft onto the Kazon ship. To prevent the Kazon acquiring any more Federation technology, he wipes the shuttle's computer core. But Seska has detected him. Although Chakotay manages the benefit of surprise and destroys the stolen module, he is quickly captured.

| Chakotay destroys the stolen transporter module |
Culluh tortures him for Voyager's command codes, which he refuses to reveal. Possession of the command codes would make capturing Voyager a relatively simple task.
Seska's mix of cajolery and threats fail to elicit Voyager's command codes from Chakotay |
Culluh tortures Chakotay for the command codes but he resists |
Voyager intercepts a message beacon left by Chakotay in which he reports that he is already dead and has successfully destroyed the transporter module.
When Voyager arrives on the scene, the Kazon Majes who have gathered order Culluh to use the command codes to destroy the starship, and are annoyed when it becomes clear that he does not yet have them. Seska's quick thinking prevents Voyager from beaming Chakotay off the Kazon ship, so Janeway transports the Kazon Majes instead. At gunpoint, they agree to release Chakotay and his shuttlecraft in return for their freedom.

Janeway remonstrates with Chakotay for his behaviour, saying that it makes discipline on board difficult if the First Officer acts unilaterally. He apologises and is put on report.
They are called to the Bridge to receive a message from Seska. Chakotay is shocked when Seska informs him that while he was unconscious, she extracted some of his DNA and impregnated herself with his child.
 | | TORRES TO JANEWAY ABOUT SESKA: He never said it to me directly, but I think he was in love with her, and then he found out that everything he knew about her was a lie. You said that he publicly defied your authority. Can you imagine what it must have been like for someone as private as Chakotay to be publicly humiliated by someone he loved, and then as if that weren't enough, she came back to taunt him in front of the entire bridge crew. .... I know Chakotay. This is his way of taking responsibility. In his mind, he's trying to protect the rest of us from a dangerous situation which he created. .... It's just that Chakotay would never tell you any of this himself. |
