Janeway as Mrs Davenport in her holonovel, who has been hired as governess to Lord Burleigh's young children since Lady Burleigh's premature death. She practises her welcome to the children, but they enter while she is doing it and overhear her.
Young Henry Burleigh looks down on Mrs Davenport, and introduces himself and his sister Beatrice formally and stiffly. Beatrice curtseys on being introduced. The holoprogram unexpectedly shuts down.
In a corridor on Voyager, Tuvok takes Crewman Kenneth Dalby, one of Chakotay's former Maquis crew, to task for doing unauthorised repairs which interfered with ship's systems. One of the ship's bioneural gel packs had malfunctioned and Dalby had replaced it. Dalby responds to Tuvok's rebuke with Dalby is antagonism.

Chakotay, Tuvok and Janeway meet in her Ready Room to discuss the bioneural gel pack failure. There are 47 gel packs in reserve. It is almost impossible to damage gel packs but there is no way to replace them once the reserve runs out. Half of the ship's critical systems are run using the gel packs. Chakotay suggests converting some systems to run on traditional isolinear circuitry. Moving onto another matter, Janeway asks Chakotay to pick out those Maquis crewmembers who would benefit from a crash course in Starfleet procedures, since their difficult attitude is partly down to lack of training, "make them feel like they're part of a team."
Tuvok: "Commander Chakotay would be a more logical choice to be their instructor. He is a Maquis, as well as their former captain."
Janeway: "That's my point. He doesn't have to earn their respect. We do."
Chakotay jokes to Tuvok: "I'll tell them to take it easy on you."
Cargo bay: the recruits objects to being selected for this training. They are, left to right: Crewman Gerron, Crewman Henley and Crewman Dalby....and a male Bolian not in the picture, Crewman Chell.
Dalby objects to Tuvok "picking on" Gerron.
The recruits walk out, disobeying Tuvok's order to remain.
In the Messhall, the four crewmen agree they will not return to Tuvok's lessons. Henley says: "What are they going to do? Put us off the ship? Keep us in the Brig for seventy years?! Every person on this ship is needed. Nothing's going to happen."
Chakotay arrives and hears the trainees' version of events. Dalby says they are happy with the Maquis way of doing things.
Chakotay punches Dalby.
Dalby is flung onto the floor by the blow. Chakotay hauls him to his feet and tells him, and the others: "That's the Maquis way too, isn't it. And if you want to keep doing it the Maquis way that's fine with me. We can do that tomorrow, the next day, every day until you report to Lieutenant Tuvok. Do you understand me?"
The trainees return to Tuvok's lessons. In the cargo bay he hands out PADDs: "These are your study assignments for next week."
Tuvok inspects the recruits' uniforms. Henley must remove her headscarf. Chell explains to Tuvok that the medallion he is wearing is of Kazleti design which he got when he visited their planet. The technique took him weeks to learn. Tuvok then orders him to remove it. Gerron removes his ear-ring.
Torres takes the damaged gel pack to Sickbay and tells the Doctor: "It's your new patient."
The Doctor picks it up. He has heard of them. His jokes: "The patient is sick."
Tuvok takes the trainees on a long exhausting scramble-climb-scramble-climb through the Jefferies tubes as they travel from Deck 11 to Deck 13 via the Messhall which is on Deck 2.
Chell drinks some water while in the Messhall. Tuvok is waiting for him by the exit with hand outstretched for the glass.
On deck 13, the recruits are near collapse, exhausted following a 10 kilometre run. Tuvok tells them: "You may be experiencing difficulty because I increased the gravity on this deck by 10 per cent." He then orders Chell and Gerron to complete their laps.
