EPISODE GUIDES : Janet's Star Trek Voyager Site

LIVING WITNESS
Episode 91 : Part A

The episode's script uses "Revised" for certain characters. I shall do the same.

Captain Janeway's Ready Room looks rather different. There is a different table, chair and furnishings. Janeway herself is different. Her hairstyle, she wears a black shirt, no combadge and sinister-looking black leather-look gloves, all these are different - this is Revised Janeway. She is in discussion with the Vaskan Ambassador whose name is Daleth. He is actually Revised Daleth.

Revised Janeway: "When diplomacy fails, there's only one alternative - violence. Force must be applied without apology." She spreads her hands. "It's the Starfleet way."

Revised Daleth: "Then our philosophies are in agreement. Will you help us?"
Revised Janeway: "You're asking me to fight your war, destroy your enemy."
Revised Daleth: "I'm asking you to intimidate the Kyrians with your technology, help me capture their leader. This ship has superior firepower. He won't risk a conflict with you."
Revised Janeway: "We risk life and limb so that your people can annex Kyrian land. Sounds like a good deal for you. What do we get?"

Revised Daleth: "A way home."
She turns to him with a dangerous glint in her eyes. "You know more about Voyager than you've let on."
Revised Daleth: "Your reputation in this Quadrant precedes you. That's why we sought you out."
Revised Janeway: "I'm listening."
Revised Daleth: "There's a cyclic wormhole five days' journey from here. We know where it is and we can help you stabilise it."

Revised Janeway, dangerously: "If you're lying...."
He ignores the implied threat. "How far do you have to go, 60,000 light-years?"

Revised Janeway: "I want all tactical data regarding your little war, Kyrian defences, position of your own forces, everything."
Revised Daleth: "You'll have it within the hour."
He gives a courtesy salute and departs.

Later, a Kazon officer enters the Bridge during preparations for war against the Kyrians.

Revised Neelix, wearing the gold of the security department, is the Ops officer. He reports: "Eight Kyrian fighter ships approaching."

Revised Janeway: "Arm the assault probes. Fire at will. Hail them."
Revised Tuvok: "Channel open."

Revised Janeway speaks into the comline: "This is Captain Janeway of the Warship Voyager. Break off your attack or I'll destroy you."
Revised Tuvok: "They are not responding."
Revised Paris: "They're returning fire. Shields are holding."

Revised Janeway: "Chakotay," she pronounces it with the first syllable stressed, "any luck tracking down their leader?"
Revised Chakotay is standing next to Revised Daleth: "Not yet. We think Tedran has gone into hiding."
Revised Janeway: "I thought he might. We'll have to flush him out."

Revised Daleth: "What do you suggest?"
Revised Janeway: "Biogenic weapons. We'll infect the most populated Kyrian territory. The Doctor's nearly done working on a weapon."
Revised Daleth: "Our conflict is with Tedran himself, not with his people. They're innocent."
Revised Janeway: "The best way to bring down a people is to make his people suffer."
Revised Daleth: "Captain-"
Revised Janeway: "This is no time for half-measures. You wanted victory. You're going to get it." She opens a com. channel. "Bridge to Sickbay. Status?"

The Revised Doctor is an android. There are cable connections between the phaser array controls and his neural net.

Revised Doctor, via comms: "We have established a datalink between my neural net and a phaser array. I am reconfiguring the beam to carry a bio-agent into the planet's atmosphere."
Revised Janeway, via comms: "When will it be ready?"
Revised Doctor, via comms: "It is ready now."

Revised Tuvok: "Phasers are online."

Revised Janeway to Revised Tuvok: "Target the first city. And fire."

The Warship Voyager has phasers mounted on raised turret-like projections. Phasers fire at the planet, carrying the bio-agent and mass death.

The image freezes. It is actually part of a history simulation being shown in the Museum of Kyrian Heritage.

Quarren, the Curator of the Museum, turns from the control panel and the large display screen to address a group of Museum visitors.

Quarren: "The Warship Voyager, one of the most powerful vessels of its time. Armed with photonic torpedoes and particle weapons this ship of destruction could wipe out an entire civilisation within hours. On this particular day in history we were lucky. The death toll could have been much worse. By the time Voyager targetted our main cities Tedran had already begun an evacuation. Thousands of lives were saved. Unfortunately it was only the beginning of Captain Janeway's onslaught. As you'll see, her actions would have a lasting effect on our world. Even today, 700 years later, we are still feeling the impact of the Voyager Encounter. Before we continue the simulation, I'd like to answer any questions you might have."

Visitor #1: "I'm curious about Voyager itself. How many people were on board?"
Quarren: "We believe they had a complement of over 300 soldiers."

Visitor #2: "Did they attack other worlds as well?"
The screenshot shows members of the visitors group.

Quarren: "Well, we aren't certain. Records of Voyager's travels through our Quadrant are incomplete, but it's safe to assume that they interfered with many other cultures, yes."

The Museum's main viewscreen, on which the Voyager Encounter is displayed.

Visitor #3: "Tell us more about the Borg drones they kept on the ship."

Quarren: "Voyager had many weapons at their disposal, including species they'd assimilated along the way: Borg, Talaxian, Kazon. They were captured and made to work as part of Voyager's fighting force.

He continues: "Let's resume the simulation and you can see for yourself. It's a few hours after the initial bombardment. Janeway and her squad are on the Bridge mounting an assault."

He warns as he operates the control interface: "Now what you are about to see is graphic and unsettling."

In the re-creation, on the Bridge of the Revised Voyager, Revised Janeway says: "Status." When there is no immediate response she says with a harder tone indicating impatience: "Status."
Revised Tuvok: "Approximately 3,000 Kyrians dead."

Revised Daleth is concerned by the number of casualties.

Revised Janeway: "That's it?"
Revised Tuvok: "The bio-agent is still dispersing through the atmosphere. The fatality will be 300,000 soon enough."
Revised Janeway: "How soon?"
Revised Tuvok: "Best guess, one hour."

Revised Janeway, joking: "Why do you always keep me waiting, Tuvok?"
Revised Tuvok grins. "My apologies. Preparing to fire again."
Revised Janeway: "Double the yield."

Revised Daleth: "Captain! Don't you think that's excessive?"
Revised Janeway: "You picked a bad time to have second thoughts, Ambassador."
Revised Daleth: "I want them defeated but this is genocide!"
Revised Janeway: "Defeat, genocide - why quibble with semantics?"
Revised Daleth, insisting: "This wasn't our agreement."

Revised Janeway stands and confronts him: "We're going to defeat the Kyrians, and you're going to keep up your end of the bargain." To the Kazon officer: "Ensign?" The Kazon ensign comes forward. "Confine this gentleman to the Brig."

She tells Revised Daleth as he is forcefully escorted from the Bridge: "I'll let you know when it's over."

Revised Paris: "Three more Kyrian vessels approaching."

Revised Janeway: "Evade them."
Revised Paris: "Aye, aye, Sir."
