Tuvok, rendered blind by the explosion of the chronoton torpedo in the Jefferies tube, is in his quarters carefully shaving. Seven arrives to guide him on his rounds. She reports her inspiration on their effort to develop temporal shielding: they must not only match the ship's shields to the temporal variance of the chronoton torpedoes (1.47) but she believes they "must also match the deflector array to the inverse of that variance." The modifications are ready now but untested.

In the corridor Ensign Brooks walks by. Seven remarks that she is Seven's cabin mate (since the crew have to share quarters). Seven is unhappy with Brooks who is negligent - she leaves equipment lying around and her clothing on the floor. Tuvok notes that it has been his observation that humans are often lax with their personal habits.
Neelix accosts them with a tactical question for Tuvok. They are about done rebuilding the internal security sensors and are ready to program the audio signal. Would Tuvok like "intruder alert" or try something more daring such as "warning, intruder alert!" or "intruders among us, danger, danger, intruders among us!" Tuvok, standing with the air of being over-patient, prefers the first option. When Neelix has gone, he tells Seven, "And you believe you have difficulties."

Then Chakotay's voice is heard over the shipwide intercom: "All hands to battle stations! Krenim vessels approaching. Repeat, all hands to battle stations!"
Tuvok orders Seven to go to deflector control and bring the new modifications on line: "We will test them in battle."

State of the Bridge.

Janeway watches Tuvok take his station.

Tuvok orders the computer to activate the braille interface.

Seven brings the temporal shielding online just in the nick of time, and the Krenim attack is repulsed. Janeway informs the attacker that Voyager now has a defence against them. The Krenim do not respond. "Their mistake," says Janeway. "Bring the ship about. We're going through their space whether they like it or not."

Annorax goes to the Garenor homeworld and fires his weapon which starts to erase the species from history.

Obrist reports on the temporal incursion....

....Annorax receives the report. He seems unconcerned until Obrist reports a terrible error. This temporal incursion has caused the entire Krenim Imperium to revert to a pre-warp state!

The Krenim vessel is pursuing Voyager but is not attacking. Janeway says they (the Krenim) do not know what to do with them now that they are shielded against them. Kim reports a spatial distortion approaching, source unknown but it originated about 20 lightyears away: "It looks like a shockwave in the fabric of space-time." Paris says they cannot outrun it, so all Janeway can do is order, "All hands, brace for impact!"

The wavefront passes over Voyager and the Krenim ship.

The Krenim ship changes but Tuvok reports that Voyager was protected by its temporal shielding.
Kim: "It's definitely a Krenim ship. Identical hull markings, same bio-spectral frequency, but it's half the size, limited fire-power."
Janeway: "What happened to the warship?"
Paris: "I'm not picking it up on long-range sensors."
Janeway: "It looks like this entire part of space has changed somehow. Last time I checked this region was filled with Krenim colonies and vessels. I just ran a scan, and sensors show no colonies and just a handful of Krenim ships."
Janeway orders all information about the phenomenon to be directed to the Astrometrics Lab. Chakotay points out that the Astrometrics Lab took heavy damage a few days ago and is offline. Janeway says that they must bring it back online: "It appears that the Krenim Imperium has vanished. Our troubles could be over and I'd like to find out why."

Aboard the time-ship, the Krenim identify Voyager ("component 049 Beta") which they had classified as an inert component. However, due to its temporal shielding Voyager's presence has thrown off their calculations for the temporal incursion at the Garenor homeworld. Annorax gives the order to take the time-ship to Voyager.

DAY 70

In the repaired Astrometrics Lab, Janeway and Seven compare scans of 'before' and 'after' the shockwave.
Janeway: "The Krenim Imperium. Over 200 star systems, over 900 planets, thousands of warp-capable vessels, and now, after the shockwave everything seems to have changed. Run a new scan. .... Same space, different configuration, exactly as Chakotay said. The Imperium appears to have been reduced to a few planets and a smattering of vessels. It appears that someone, or something, has altered history. Well, why weren't we affected?"
Seven: "Perhaps we were protected from the changes by our temporal shielding."
Janeway: "Mmm. So the question remains: what caused that shockwave in the first place? See if you can track it back to its origin."
Seven: "The shockwave emanated from a planet 20 lightyears away, the Garenor homeworld."
Janeway: "The Garenor? We passed their planet 3 weeks ago."
Seven: "The planet is no longer populated."
Janeway: "What?"
Seven: "Astrometric data indicate that the instant the shockwave appeared the Garenor species vanished."
Janeway: "Erased from history."
Seven: "Captain?"
Janeway: "I'm no authority on time travel, in fact I've made it my goal in life to avoid it but this sounds to me like a causality paradox. Think about it: a temporal shockwave eliminates a single species and all of history changes as a result."
Seven: "An intriguing theory. Perhaps the Krenim are responsible. They do possess temporal technology."
Janeway: "But why would they alter history to undermine themselves. No, we're missing a big pieceof the puzzle. Run another scan of the-"

Annorax's time-ship arrives. It dwarfs Voyager. Obrist reports to Annorax that Voyager's temporal shielding is generating a level 9 temporal disruption. On Voyager Kim reports that the other ship is in a state of temporal flux as if it exists outside space-time.

Annorax orders Obrist to collect a 10 square metre sample of Voyager's hull and two living samples. The samples turn out to be Chakotay and Paris.

Janeway: "I'm Captain Janeway of the Federation starship Voyager. Who are you and where are my men?"
Annorax: "I am Annorax of the Krenim Imperium. We've transferred your crewmen to my vessel for analysis. Your ship does not come from this Quadrant."
Janeway: "We come from Earth, a planet 65,000 lightyears from here. We're on our way home."
Annorax: "I see."
Janeway: "We've been observing some rather unusual events in the region. It seems your Imperium never existed. Perhaps you could shed some light on this?"
Annorax: "That doesn't concern you. What is important is that you understand that I bear you no hostility. But you have diverted me from my mission."
Janeway: "Your mission? You're responsible for the changes in the timeline."
Annorax: "You're a long way from your world. In a manner of speaking, so am I. Unfortunately only one of us can go home again. Your sacrifice will restore the lives of countless millions. I'm sorry."
Kim: "I'm reading a massive energy build-up, some kind of weapon."
Janeway: "Shields."
Seven: "Temporal shields are weakening."
Kim: "Captain, that energy beam. It's pushing Voyager out of the space-time continuum."
Janeway: "He's trying to erase us from history."
Seven: "I have scanned their propulsion system. Their vessel's mass prevents them from exceeding warp 6. We can escape."
Tuvok: "Captain, I must remind you our structural integrity is still impaired. If we go to warp now the damage to Voyager will be extreme."
Kim: "What about Tom and Chakotay?"
Janeway: "We'll have to come back for them. All hands, clear the outer sections and prepare for wide-scale breaches. Tuvok, activate the transverse bulkheads."
Seven: "Temporal shields are failing."
Janeway: "Engage warp 7."
Kim: "They're not in pursuit!"
