As the mag-lev carriage rises higher and higher through the planet's atmosphere, the air is getting thin. Neelix and everyone else, except Tuvok, have trouble breathing.

Tuvok goes over to Dr Vatm. "Doctor, I am going to inject you with a tri-ox compound. It will help to oxygenate your blood."
Dr Vatm nods. hypospray injection After Tuvok injects him using a hypospray, Vatm sips from his water bottle.

Tuvok goes over to Sklar.
Tuvok: "I've prepared an injection of-"
Sklar: "Yes, I know. I heard you. It won't be painful, will it?"
Tuvok: "No. It is a simple subdermal transfer."
Sklar: "Oh good, good. I despise needles. Any progress with the converters?"

Tuvok: "We were unable to salvage the damaged tank but Neelix is working to increase the efficiency of the functioning one."
Sklar: "And if he can't, we'll all suffocate."
Tuvok: "It is illogical to dwell on situations beyond your control. It will only serve to heighten your anxiety which, if I may say so, is heightened enough."
Sklar, with a touch of sarcasm: "Oh, well, thank you for your reassurance."

Tuvok goes over to the console. He packs away the medkit.
Neelix: "How is everybody?"
Tuvok: "They are suffering the initial stages of carbon monoxide poisoning."
Neelix: "And you?"
Tuvok: "My lungs are capable of respirating in an extremely thin atmosphere."
Neelix: "Then if we can't fix this air supply you may the only one left to pilot this thing. I'd better start showing you how to use the ascent thrusters." Tuvok comes round to Neelix's side of the console and they look at the relevant instruments. Neelix explains: "They must be kept at a minimum temperature-"

They are interrupted as Hanjuan calls out: "Stop! What are you doing?!"
They turn to see Dr Vatm trying to tap out the command sequence to open the carriage door.
Tuvok pulls him away from the door, but Vatm mutters desperately: "-get away, got to get out! Let me out! They call me, I need it!"
Lillias: "So now he wants to leave."
Hanjuan: "Let him!"
Vatm: "You don't understand."

Urgently Vatm tries to make Tuvok understand. "There's something out there!"
Tuvok: "What is out there?"
"The roof!" But as Vatm manages to get these words out, he falls to the floor.

Tuvok: "He's going into shock." He gets out his tricorder to get a diagnosis so that he can treat him, but then the tricorder signal changes to a level tone. "He's dead."

Neelix: "Can you revive him?"
Tuvok: "His cardio-pulmonary tissues have begun to deteriorate."
Hanjuan: "From lack of oxygen."
Tuvok: "No. I believe he was murdered."

Everyone is stunned. They stand motionless for a long moment as they contemplate the significance.
Finally Lillias manages to say: "Murdered?! How?"

Tuvok: "Poisoning. According to my tricorder readings, his water supply has been contaminated with a lydroxide corrosive."
Neelix: "Lydroxide. That's the coolant used in the tether couplings."

Hanjuan: "How do you know it wasn't an accident?"
Tuvok: "The coolant system's completely sealed and there is no lydroxide anywhere else on board."
Sklar: "Oh, now we have a choice between death by suffocation or death by poisoning."

Tuvok: "I will conduct an investigation once we return to the ship. For now we must focus on survival."
Hanjuan: "Again you take command. Again you decide our fate. How do we know you didn't kill him?"
Tuvok: "I have no motive."
Hanjuan: "Your motive would be the same as ours - revenge."
Tuvok: "I am Vulcan. I do not succumb to emotion."
Hanjuan: "Oh, we are expected to believe that?"

While Tuvok and Hanjuan have been arguing, Neelix has been thinking. Now he says: "I think we should stop the carriage."
Tuvok: "Why?"
Neelix: "Something Dr Vatm said, about getting up on the roof."
Tuvok: "Dr Vatm was delirious from lack of oxygen. He attempted to open the hatch of this vessel and go outside. It would have killed him and possibly all of us as well."
Neelix: "Exactly. He was desperate enough to risk his own life. I think we should go up and find out what he was talking about."
Tuvok: "If we stop the carriage we will risk losing mag-lev cohesion again. We'll check the roof upon returning to Voyager."

Neelix: "No. I've got a funny feeling about this."
Tuvok: "I am not interested in your funny feeling."
Neelix: "You're not listening to what I'm saying! Delirious or not, he said he needed whatever's up there. Now what if it's something that can help us?"

Tuvok: "I will not debate this with you. Please pilot the craft and remain silent."
Neelix, forcefully: "You're going to listen to me!"
He pulls a lever. The carriage judders to a halt. Everyone is thrown a little off balance by it.

Tuvok: "You are becoming emotionally distraught. There is little point in furthering this discussion."
Neelix: "I'll tell you who's being emotional. You. You hide it behind that Vulcan calm, but the truth is you're filled with contempt and sarcasm and I'm tired of being the target of all your hostility."
Tuvok: "You are mistaken."
Lillias: "No he's not. I can see it every time you talk to Neelix. You're dismissive and condescending."
Tuvok tells her: "You are projecting your own emotional bias onto my actions. I have no feelings towards Mr Neelix."

Neelix: "That's right! That's exactly what I'm talking about. You have no feelings for me. But you have feelings against me. For three years you've ridiculed me and made it obvious to everyone that you have no respect for me. And I've tolerated it. You know why? You know why? Because you are smarter than I am, Tuvok, and more logical, and stronger, and superior in almost every way. And I admire you. But you don't have any instincts, you don't have any gut feelings, and you don't really understand people. But non-Vulcans have feelings, and they have to listen to them. And I've got to listen to mine! And right now they're telling me we need to get up on that roof and find out what the doctor was talking about."

Tuvok: "I disagree."

Neelix: "Fine!" He flings himself into the pilot's seat. "But I'm the only one who can pilot this vessel. And we're not going anywhere until someone goes up on that roof."
Tuvok: "You leave me little choice."

Neelix: "Alright then. Now, one of us needs to go outside."
Hanjuan: "I'm not going out there."
Sklar: "Don't even think about me."
Neelix: "I'm willing to give it a-"
Tuvok: "I will go."
Neelix: "You?"
Tuvok: "I am the logical one to make the egress. I can breathe the rarified atmosphere."

He starts climbing the ladder to the gantry that leads to another ladder. Above that is the hatch to the roof.
Sklar says to Tuvok as he starts climbing the ladder to the gantry: "I can't believe you're going out there. You don't even know what you're looking for."
Tuvok turns and remarks: "I am looking for Mr Neelix's instinct. Perhaps it will be marked."

Lillias and Neelix watch as Tuvok finishes climbing the ladder, goes along the gantry, and climbs the next ladder up to the roof hatch.
Neelix to Lillias: "It's strange, but I really like him." Tuvok climbs up through the roof hatch. "I just wish the feeling were mutual."
