On Voyager, the Doctor, assisted by Kes, tries to revive Janeway. They are watched by Janeway, but none of them are aware of her.

Back on Voyager, Chakotay watches hopefully.

Janeway is there too, watching her corpse.

Doctor: "Ten milligrams cordrazine. We'll use it in conjunction with the cortical stimulator. Now." Janeway's body jolts. Kes reports the instruments' readings: "No pulse nor blood pressure. Minimum electrical activity in the midbrain. No measurable response in the cerebral cortex." Doctor: "Again." Kes: "Doctor, we're getting a steady pulse." Doctor: "Quickly. 75 milligrams inaprovaline. I'll begin direct synaptic stimulation." Kes: "Pulse is weakening. We're losing her again." Doctor: "Cortical stimulator. Now!" Kes: "No vital signs. No brain activity." Doctor: "Again." Kes: "No change." Doctor: "Again!" Kes: "Doctor-" Doctor: "Don't question me! Again!" There is no response in Janeway's body. He closes his tricorder. "Make a note in the log. Death occurred at 0320 hours. Cause: massive cerebro-vascular collapse."

Chakotay is devastated. He leaves without a word.

Janeway says, "Computer, confirm Janeway's voice pattern." But there is no response.

"Kes, you're a telepath. You've been able to sense things others can't. Kes, can you sense me?" Kes does not sense, hear or see her. The Doctor tells her: "Kes, please go to the Science Lab and prepare the autopsy protocols."

Janeway hurries after her but when the doors close behind Kes, Janeway ends up walking through the doors as if she were a ghost.

Janeway hurries after Kes to walk beside her. "I'm here, Kes. I'm staying with you until you realise it." Kes still does not sense, hear or see her.

Janeway hurries round to in front of Kes so that Kes walks straight through her.

Kes turns and looks back, having sensed something: "Captain?" Janeway: "Did you feel that, Kes? It was me."

Kes activates her combadge combadge and breaks into a run. "Kes to Commander Chakotay. I need to talk to you right away." A delighted Janeway hurries to keep up with her.

There is a senior staff meeting in the Briefing Room. Kes: "Maybe it was nothing but I had the strongest feeling that the Captain was there in the corridor with me." Tuvok: "It is possible that in your distress over the Captain's death you imagined that you were aware of her." Kes: "It was more than that, I'm sure of it."

Chakotay: "In the past, Kes has shown an ability to detect an unseen presence. I think we have to take her seriously." Torres: "The Captain's consciousness might have phase-shifted out of our reality." She could be in some kind of alternate dimension in subspace." Paris: "We have to find her somehow." Torres: "Harry and I can run a full subspace sweep, see if we can come up with anything." Chakotay: "Get on it. It's your top priority. Neelix, help the crew with this. Keep their morale up until we can get some answers." Neelix: "Yes, sir. Right away." Tuvok: "Commander, I suggest that I work with Kes. I may be able to help her increase the range of her perceptions." Chakotay: "Good idea. Tom, we'll take duty stations."

As everyone leaves to get on with the new tasks, Janeway, who is there watching though no one senses her, approves and says aloud to herself: "That's more like it."

In engineering Torres and Kim are working. Janeway is watching them closely but of course they are unaware of her. Torres: "I've reconfigure the lateral sensor array to scan subspace." Janeway, even though no one can see or hear her: "Don't forget to run a magneton sweep." Kim: "The forward array is ready to scan for temporal phase-shifting, chronoton particles or field flux." Torres: "I'm going to activate the magneton scanner. It might pick up an anomalous presence."

Suddenly a bright light appears at the entrance to Engineering, not seen or heard by anyone except Janeway, who exclaims: "Now what?"

A figure walks through the light and into Engineering, seen only by Janeway.

Janeway is totally astonished: "Daddy!"
