Janet's Star Trek Voyager Site

MACROCOSM

EPISODE 54

Part E

In environmental control Janeway works at a wall-mounted console then contacts the Doctor, via comms. "Janeway to Doctor. I've got the environmental controls back online."
Doctor, via comms: "Set the dispersal nodes to one part per thousand-" Suddenly the ship is jolted. "What's going on?"

Janeway, via comms, heading for a console monitor: "I'm not sure but I think someone's firing at Voyager. Doctor, use the shuttle's sensors to find out what's happening and patch the data to me."
Doctor, via comms: "Aye, Captain."

Janeway, identifying the starship on the monitor as it fires at Voyager, via comms: "It's the Tak Tak. Doctor, open a channel and hail their captain."
Doctor, via comms: "Stand by."

Janeway: "Consul, this is Captain Janeway. Why are you firing at us?"
Tak Tak Consul: "The Garan mining colony infected. We've purified them. Your distress call received. Voyager infected. We are purifying you."
Janeway: "Purifying? You're trying to destroy us!"
Tak Tak Consul: "No choice. No cure for the virus. Voyager's existence a threat. Your illness, our apologies."
Janeway: "Wait! We've developed a cure. Your torpedoes just stopped us getting it to our crew and putting an end to this."
Tak Tak Consul: "Cure?"
Janeway: "Yes, a synthetic antigen. We've tested it and it works. I can prove it to you and I'd be willing to share the antigen with your people but you've got to stop attacking my ship. Give me a chance to save my crew."
Tak Tak Consul: "A chance. One hour." Communication contact is closed.

Janeway, via comms: "Doctor, we've got a problem. That last torpedo destroyed the secondary power couplings. I can't get the environmental controls back online."
Doctor, via comms: "We appear to be low on options."
Janeway, via comms: "The only systems we still have access to are the ones with independent power sources: shuttlecraft, life support, holodecks- Doctor, you said the macroviruses are attracted to infrared signatures."
Doctor, via comms: "That's right."
Janeway, via comms: "Right now, you and I are the only targets left on board. What if we gave them something new to sink their teeth into?"
Doctor, via comms: "What are you suggesting?"

The Paxau resort holoprogram is activated on Holodeck 2. Its inhabitants are overwhelmed by macroviruses.

Janeway, via comms: "Doctor, it seems to be working. I've programmed the holocharacters to react to the virus. We don't have much time. Grab your hypospray and get to the crew. You've got a clear path to the Messhall and both cargobays."
Doctor, via comms: "Acknowledged. What about you, Captain?"
Janeway, via comms: "I've put together what you might call an antigen bomb. Now all I have to do is drop it."

Janeway walks briskly to the Holodeck where the macroviruses have now congregated.

As she stands by the entrance, in front of the Holodeck control panel, Janeway sets the antigen bomb at 41 seconds.mouseover to set the antigen bomb
mouseover to activate the antigen bomb

She starts to throw the antigen bomb inside when a macrovirus attacks and knocks her to the floor and attacks her!

The bomb rolls out of reach and the phaser rifle slides away where she cannot reach it.

Janeway fights to avoid being pierced by the macrovirus' murderous-looking needle-like projection.

As Janeway fights, the seconds fly by. The antigen bomb registers 26 seconds before detonation, and counting down!

Janeway manages to throw the macrovirus off. As it starts to lift off in order to attack her again, she draws her knife.

The macrovirus wraps a tentacle around her wrist. She hacks it off. Unable to fly properly, it falls to the floor.

She stabs the microvirus. It falls to the ground, dead.

With just seconds to spare, Janeway picks up the antigen bomb and hurls it into the Holodeck.

She races away around the corner and dives for cover around the corner. The antigen bomb explodes.

Janeway, taking cover.

Doctor, via comms.: "Doctor to Captain Janeway. Captain, please respond."
Janeway: "Go ahead."

Doctor: "It worked. The macroviruses have been destroyed."
Janeway: "And the ship?"
Doctor: "There was heavy damage suffered on Holodeck 2 but there are no hull breaches in evidence."

Back in the lab, Janeway communicates with the Tak Tak Consul.

Tak Tak Consul: "Astonishment. Your vessel: purified."
Janeway: "And we'd be willing to share the cure with you if you'd be kind enough to forego destroying our ship."
Tak Tak Consul: "Of course, of course. Purification will cease. My word. Many thanks to captain of Voyager. Good health."
Janeway: "Good health."

Tak Tak Consul: "Good health."

She ends contact and puts her hands on her hips. She realises she has again made a very rude gesture in the Tak Tak language, but this time is not bothered considering that the Tak Tak opened fire on Voyager.

USS Voyager, back on course for the Alpha Quadrant, with the crew back in full health and almost all the ship's systems functioning normally.

In her Ready Room, Janeway is relaxing, doing a painting. The door signal sounds. audio: Door signaldoor signal
Janeway: "Come in."

Chakotay enters. "Morning, Captain. Here's an update on repairs." He hands her a PADD.

Janeway: "How's the crew holding up?"
Chakotay: "They're fine, although the Doctor tells me that a few people are still reporting post-viral queasiness."

Janeway: "I'm not surprised." She sips her tea. "Inform the crew that I'm granting extended R&R for all personnel and work out the shift rotations."

Chakotay: "Aye, Captain. Speaking of R&R a few of us are going skiing on the Holodeck: the Ktarian glaciers - fresh air, good workout. Care to join us?"
Janeway: "No, thank you, but have fun."

Chakotay: "Not your cup of tea?"
Janeway: "Oh, on the contrary. I love to ski. Let's just say I've had enough of a workout for the time being."
Chakotay: "Understood." He leaves.
Janeway exercises her neck by moving her head, then returns to the calm and relaxing pleasure of painting.
