Janeway: "Were any other gel-packs infected?"
Doctor: "No, just the one in the Messhall. The ship is healthy. It's the crew we have to worry about. Your bones have healed but the surrounding tissue will be sensitive for a few days.
Janeway: "It's getting warmer in here."
Doctor: "I'm afraid it's not just the ship, Captain. It's also you. You've been infected with the macrovirus. You're experiencing a high fever."
Janeway: "Yes, on the Bridge, I was bitten by one of them."
Doctor: "Your glandular system's already being infected. If I don't treat you now you'll end up like the rest of the crew. I've spent the past few hours perfecting the antigen but I haven't tested it on a live subject yet."

Janeway: "Looks like I'll have to be your guinea pig, Doctor." audio: hypospray injectionhypospray injection
Janeway asks: "The crew, why are they all in the Messhall and the cargo bays?"
Doctor: "I believe the larger macroviruses are driven by some sort of instinct to assemble their host population."
Janeway: "Tell me what happened, after B'Elanna was exposed to the infected gel-pack."
Doctor: "I was faced with an imminent epidemic...."

Most of the crew in the Messhall are feeling unwell. the Doctor scans Torres with a medical tricorder. "Oh no. Doctor to the Bridge. The macrovirus is on board Voyager and appears to be airborne. I suggest a level 4 quarantine of the Messhall and all adjoining sections."

Chakotay, on the Bridge, via comms: "Acknowledged." Contact between himself and the Doctor is closed. "Red alert." To Tuvok: "Initiate level 4 quarantine protocols on deck 2."
Tuvok: "Aye, sir."
Chakotay: "All hands, this is Commander Chakotay. We've detected an airborne virus in the Messhall. Deck 2's under quarantine. No crewmember, repeat no crewmember, is to enter or leave any section on deck 2. Stand by for further instructions."

Tuvok: "I've erected the bio-containment fields. The area has been sealed."

Doctor: "We managed to avoid a shipwide outbreak, but every crewmember on deck 2 had been contaminated. I collected a single live specimen of the macrovirus and returned to Sickbay in hopes of finding a cure."

In the Sickbay lab, Kes is ready at the microscope. "Ready, Doctor."
Doctor: "Optimal magnification."
Kes: "The specimen has synthesised B'Elanna's growth hormone into its own structure."
Doctor: "Excellent. That should give us the information we need to destroy the virus without killing its host cells."
Kes: "The virus has grown by 150 microns."
Doctor: "Its rate of growth shouldn't hinder our analysis as long as it's genetic structure stays the same."
Suddenly Kes sees that the specimen is no longer under the microscope. Where is it?! She backs away from the microscope. "Doctor!"
Doctor: "Computer, erect a level 3 forcefield around the microscope station!"
Just in time the specimen, now the size of a small insect, is contained within the forcefield.

Messhall.
Paris: "Well, so much for lunch."
Torres: "I may never look at food again."
Paris: "I thought Klingons didn't get nauseated. You have a redundant stomach."
Torres: "Well, right now, they're both unhappy."
As Torres moves her head, Paris sees several macroviruses emerging from wounds on her neck.
Paris moves away from Torres so as not to let her overhear disturbing news. He taps his combadge. audio: combadgecombadge "Paris to Sickbay."
Doctor, via comms.: "Go ahead, Lieutenant."
Paris, via comms: "I just saw two macroviruses come out of B'Elanna's neck."
Doctor, via comms: "Stand by, Mr Paris. We're close to formulating an antigen."

Kes: "The virus has grown to .3 metres."
Doctor: "On the microscopic level the virus uses that needle-like projection to penetrate a cell membrane. On our level it probably impales its victim in much the same way, infusing it with its own genetic code. The antigen is ready. Kes." She moves to a safe distance. "Computer, deactivate forcefield." He seizes hold of the macrovirus and wrestles with it until he can inject it with the antigen. The macrovirus dies and falls to the floor. "Well, one down, ten billion to go." audio clip

Eager to innoculate all those infected I quickly headed for the quarantined area. Their condition had grown worse. It was the least of our problems.

The Doctor goes to Torres in the Messhall. "Lieutenant, if you can hear me I'm going to give you an injection. It should eliminate the virus."
Paris, who is feeling unwell, stirs as a loud buzzing sound is heard. "What is that?"
Doctor, remembering what he has dealt with in the Sickbay lab: "You don't want to know."
The Doctor sees two macroviruses and turns to dive for cover.

The Doctor is attacked by a macrovirus before he can innoculate anyone and it manages to hit his mobile emitter, making him realise that he needs to leave. "Doctor to the Bridge. Intruder alert. Deck 2, section 13."

Doctor: "Within minutes, dozens of the larger organisms forced their way beyond deck 2 and overwhelmed the ship. It wasn't long before the crew was incapacitated."

Doctor: "Although I've developed an effective vaccine, I can't administer it! Every time I get to the crew I'm attacked. Perhaps with your help-"
Janeway: "How many of the larger macroviruses are there?"
Doctor: "I have no way of knowing. Dozens, perhaps hundreds. They're replicating at an exponential rate. By this time tomorrow there could be thousands."
The macroviruses arrive at the Sickbay door and start trying to get in. Janeway comments: "Speak of the devil."
The Doctor scans her with a medical tricorder and reports: "You're cured."
Janeway: "Question is: how do we cure the rest of the crew? This antigen, can it be distributed in a gaseous form?"
Doctor: "For absorption via the respiratory system? I've already considered dispensing it through environmental controls but they're offline and I have limited engineering expertise."
Janeway: "Leave that to me. All we have to do is get to environmental control on deck 12."
Doctor: "Easier said than done. We'll run into the same problem I faced when I tried to get to the Messhall."
Janeway: "Not if I can help it. Prepare two cannisters of antigen." The Doctor starts to do so. "We'll split up and take different routes to environmental control. It'll double our chances. If you get there first, call me and I'll talk you through the repairs."
The Doctor speaks as he finishes preparing the antigen cannisters. "Macroviruses are attracted to infrared radiation. Set your tricorder to emit a thermal scattering signal. It'll make it more difficult to target you."
The Doctor hands Janeway a cannister of antigen. "Ready when you are."

They go over to the hatch giving access to the Jefferies tubes. As she is about to get into the Jefferies tube crawlway, Janeway looks back at the Sickbay doors where the macroviruses are trying to get in. "We'll be right with you," she tells them.

Janeway leads the way through the Jefferies tubes.

They reach a junction in the Jefferies tube network.

Janeway: "Take Jefferies tube 11. What's wrong?"
Doctor: "I've been studying the ship's infrastructures and I'm familiar with most of it, but how do I get there from here?"
Janeway: "Jefferies tube 11. Take a left at section 31 and straight down past the tractor beam emitter until you hit deck 10. Get out at section 3 and follow the corridor all the way around until-"
Doctor: "Until you hit the Shuttlebay, then I crawl through access port 9, go past three airlocks and then two decks down, environmental controls at the end of the hall. Now I remember. Who designed this ship anyway?!"
Janeway: "Good luck."

The Doctor sets off along a crawlway.

Janeway forces open a hatchway. Three macroviruses approach. She fires at them and destroys them.

Doctor, via comms: "Doctor to Captain Janeway."
Janeway, via comms: "Go ahead."
Doctor, via comms: "I won't be joining you as soon as I'd hoped. The macroviruses overwhelmed me on deck 10 and my portable emitter was nearly destroyed. I've taken refuge inside the Shuttlebay, in a shuttlecraft."
Janeway: "Stay put, Doctor. I'm close to environmental control."
