 | As they crawl through the Jefferies tubes and reach a junction Janeway asks: "Are you alright?"
Neelix: "Disgusting! but alright." Janeway scans him with her tricorder: "It's the same mucilaginous compound we saw in the transporter room. Come on." |  |
 | She stops, looking at her tricorder readings.
Neelix: "What is it?" Janeway: "Human lifesigns! Very faint. 30 or more." Neelix: "Where are they coming from?" Janeway: "Several decks above us. I can't pinpoint the location." Neelix: "Maybe the crew are hiding from the aliens and they've set up a defence perimeter." Janeway: "Maybe. One thing's for sure: whoever's up there, they're still alive. Once we get the main computer online we'll be able to get a fix on their location." |
 | Neelix: "So hot. My head is spinning."
Janeway: "You've got a high fever, fluid in your lungs." Neelix: "Lung." Janeway: "That alien compound is acting quickly. Try to hang on. Just three more decks." Neelix: "Aye, aye, Captain." So unsteady on his feet that he reels against the further wall, he collapses. |
 | Neelix: "Captain, go on without me."
Janeway: "I'm not going to leave you here, Neelix." Neelix: "I can't-" Janeway: "There should be an emergency medical kit up that tube. I'll bring you back something to get you on your feet. Don't go away." |
 | She climbs up a Jefferies tube ladder through several sections. |
 | While she is gone Neelix hears the buzzing sound again and moves to look for it in the crawlway they have come from; the crawlway hatch door is still open. |
 | Meanwhile Janeway reaches the medical kit, opens it and selects an instrument. She hears Neelix's desperate shout: "Help! Captain!" |
 | Janeway shouts back: "I'm coming, Neelix!" She hurries back down the ladder. She hears him scream. "Neelix!" |
 | But when she returns he is gone. There is just a pool of the mucilaginous compound where he was! And there is a trail of the substance leading away from there in the Jefferies tube crawlway! |  |
 | She looks along the crawlway but there is no sign of Neelix. Grimly she realises something terrible must have happened to him, and the rest of the crew, and she must somehow deal with it on her own. | |
 | With phaser at the ready, Janeway grimly and cautiously moves through engineering and climbs the ladder to the upper deck. See also the sequence of 6 screenshots below. |
Screenshots 1-12 below: Janeway opens a weapons locker (or chest). She gears herself up for an emergency situation and combat-readiness: she removes her jacket and grey top for comfort. She takes out a small backpack from the chest and puts several items into it. She puts a knife into a sheath on her left hip. Finally she takes out a phaser rifle and shuts the chest.

 | Back on the lower level of engineering, Janeway arms the phaser rifle and strides out. |
 1 Janeway forces open the doors so that she can enter the Bridge. |
 2 Cautiously Janeway moves across the apparently deserted bridge, phaser rifle ready. Not all the ship's systems are operating. |
 3 Janeway takes off an access panel at the science station to access the controls. |
 4 Janeway works but.... |
 5 ....she is unaware that one of the alien lifeforms is on bridge too. |
 6 The alien moves towards her. |
 7 Janeway speaks a message which is transmitted on all subspace channels: "This is Captain Kathryn Janeway of the Federation starship Voyager to anyone within range. My ship has been seized by unknown lifeforms. Require any and all assistance." |
 8 She is bit on the left arm. She swats what did it and looks at it before wiping her hand on her trousers. |
 9 She gets out a medical instrument from her knapsack and uses it to clean the wound and give it basic treatment. |
After setting the science monitor on the Bridge to scan for lifeforms and discovering the location of those found.....
