PART C

"dream"/memory is shown in this font

In Sickbay the Doctor examines her. Torres suddenly wakes and discovers she is in Sickbay.
Doctor: "Good to see you're awake, Lieutenant."
Torres: "What happened?"
Kes: "I found you unconscious in the corridor near engineering."
Torres surmises: "I was dreaming again."
Doctor: "Not according to your cortical theta-wave readings. The pattern clearly indicated that you were experiencing memories, specifically: implanted memories."
Torres: "Implanted? By the Enarans."
Doctor: "There is strong evidence of telepathic activity in your frontal lobe."
Janeway: "My experience with the Enarans' telepathy seems to be very different from yours. Jor Brel was standing near me when I received his memories. Were there any Enarans near when you had your dreams?"
Torres: "No, I was alone every time."
Janeway: "You've also been asleep or unconscious every time. The shared memories feel like vivid dreams to you."
Doctor: "In the Lieutenant's case, the memories seem to have been placed in her unconscious. They're only emerging when her conscious mind is inactive."
Kes: "Why did she pass out?"
Doctor: "The synpatic patterns of the implanted memories are not quite compatible with her neural pathways. There's been some minor cortical damage, which I've corrected."
Janeway: "Can you prevent further damage?"
Doctor: "This inhibitor will control her theta-wave activity." He places the device. "That should suppress the memories."
Torres: "I won't have any more of the dreams?"
Doctor: "That's the idea."
Torres: "Ah."
Kes: "What's wrong?"
Torres: "If the dreams stop, I'll never know what happens to these people. I mean, this woman, Korenna, I've- I feel what she feels and right now she is torn and confused about her loyalties, and I don't know what I'm, what she's going to do."
Doctor: "I don't think satisfying your curiosity is worth risking brain damage, Lieutenant."
Janeway: "I'm giving you the next two days off duty. Use them to rest. I'll speak with Brel, find out what's happening to you."
Torres: "I'd like to come with you, Captain. I'd rest a lot better if I had some answers."

In the Captain's Ready Room, there is a meeting between Janeway and Jor Brel, with Torres and Tuvok present.
Jor Brel: "I find it impossible that any of us could be doing this purposely."
Tuvok: "You do possess the capability to share your experiences without mutual consent?"
Jor Brel: "Yes, but er, this isn't done. I, I know that we had a misunderstanding before, Captain, but I assure you we have strict ethics."
Janeway: "I'm not suggesting otherwise. We're only trying to find out how this is happening."
Jor Brel: "Well, I have heard of instances where members of some alien races have been affected by the slight telepathic field we generate, but nothing as intense as the Lieutenant has described."
Janeway: "According to our Doctor they're memories."
Jor Brel: "It's possible. She could be picking up stray thoughts and memories from every Enaran on the ship. Must be terribly confusing. Perhaps that's why her mind has organised it into a kind of narrative."
Torres: "Are you saying that I'm making all this up?"
Jor Brel: "No, no, no. Some elements may very well have come our actual experiences. I confess I may crawled through a bedroom window or two in my youth. You mentioned the citizenship award. There are several past recipients in our group. We may be each some small details to your story."
Torres: "Nothing really happened the way I remember it?"
Jor Brel: "It's highly unlikely."
Janeway: "We appreciate your help, Jor Brel."
Jor Brel: "I wish there was something more that I could do. I truly regret any ill-effects that our presence here have caused you."
Janeway: "Fortunately those effects are under control now. The Doctor was able to suppress the memories."
Jor Brel: "I'm very glad to hear that."
He leaves. audio: standard doorsstandard doors

Tuvok: "His explanation is plausible."
Janeway: "B'Elanna?"
Torres: "I don't know. Those dreams are so real. Maybe he's right."
Janeway: "The Enarans haven't shown any hint of subterfuge, any hidden agenda. They've been nothing but straightforward and honest. You're in no immediate danger. They'll be gone in another day. The situation will resolve itself."
Tuvok to Janeway: "And yet you fully intend to continue investigating."
Janeway to Tuvok: "I wonder how long it's been since I did anything that's surprised you."
Tuvok: "I share your concern, Captain. We haven't ruled out the possibility this may be a deliberate act."
Janeway: "I want to talk to more of the Enarans, see what they have to say."
Torres: "I'll talk to Jessen and Mirell. They've been working with me in Engineering."
Janeway: "You've done enough already, B'Elanna. I want you to get some rest."
Torres: "But-"
Janeway, kindly but firmly: "You need to get away from this. We'll take it from here."

In her quarters Torres cannot stop thinking about the matter.
She holds the cortical inhibitor in her hand.
Then she firmly sets it aside and climbs onto her bed, determined to experience more of the memories.

Suddenly her mind is transported again. Again she is Korenna, and she is in Korenna's room at home. Jareth enters.
Jareth: "Korenna, are you ready?" He examines her, pleased with what he sees. "Ah, you'll do well. I'll be with you."
Korenna/(Torres): "This is all voluntary, isn't it? They want to be resettled?"
Jareth: "Of course, although it's impossible to understand what these Regressives want. They simply don't think like we do. How do we relate to people who refuse all but the most primitive technology, who live their lives without a communications interlink or microfusion generators?"
Korenna/(Torres): "If that's the way they want to live, why can't they?"
Jareth: "They can. That's why we're helping them to resettle, so that they can be completely comfortable by practising a way of life that they've chosen."
Korenna/(Torres): "They could do that here, in their village."
Jareth: "Well, you wouldn't say that if you've ever been inside that place. Do you realise they don't even use radioseptics to sterilise their homes, their hands before they eat? It's a miracle they haven't started a plague by now."
Korenna/(Torres): "Then it's dangerous to have them living here?"
Jareth: "Yes it is. And we've been tolerant for a very long time. But I think by now that even they realise that they'd be better off living somewhere else."
Korenna/(Torres): "But some of them want to stay here."
Jareth: "Well, there are always some people who resist change even if they know it's best for them. But once they see their friends and family happily settled in a new colony they'll want to go as well." He leaves.

Outside, the work Korenna/(Torres) participates in is the marshalling of the Regressives.

The Regressives are made to stand in a queue at the gate. When a name is called, the Regressive called shows his identity tag to her before being moved on to where, no doubt, transport awaits them to take them far away from their village, out of sight and mind of the other Enarans. It is part of the process of "resettling" the Regressives.

"Demalos! Sanric! Farran!" One by one the named Regressives come forward, show their identity tag, and

Korenna/(Torres) marks them off on her handheld data device.

A fearful female Regressive asks Korenna/(Torres): "What's going to happen to us?"

Korenna/(Torres): "You'll have a new place to live, with your own kind. You'll be happier there."

Woman: "Please, can you tell me-"

A guard orders her: "Move on!"

Woman, desperate: "I only want to know where we're going!"

But she is forced to move on.

The name: "Alaris! Dathan Alaris!" is called.

Korenna/(Torres) is shocked. But Dathan is not there.

Jareth goes over to her and demands: "Where is he?"

She is staring at her data device disbelievingly. "He can't be leaving today!"

Jareth: "Did you warn him? Did you tell him he was on the list?"

Korenna/(Torres): "I didn't even know that he was!" She turns accusingly on him: "You put his name there, didn't you? To keep him away from me?!"

Suddenly a Regressive attacks Korenna/(Torres). Before guards can take him away he scratches Korenna/(Torres) on the cheek, leaving a bloody wound.

Torres 'wakes' from the memory. She feels where the scratch would be on Korenna. Suddenly she knows which of the Enarans Korenna must be, for she has met an Enaran woman who has the scars from those scratches on her face!
