PART B

"dream"/memory is shown in this font

Torres is in bed.

In her dream her character's father is talking.
Jareth: "I'm not one to dictate who your friends are, but I'm sure you can see as clearly as I can that some friends are less suitable than others."
Korenna (Torres): "Like Dathan?"
Jareth: "Yes. You promised you wouldn't see him any more, then I heard you were talking to him again the other day."
Korenna (Torres): "He came up to me on the street. I couldn't help it."
Jareth: "Korenna, don't you see I am thinking of him as well as you. Now, you only encourage him this way. It isn't fair, is it?"
Korenna (Torres): "What isn't fair is that you treat him like everybody else. He's different. If you just talk to him you'd understand that."
Jareth: "You know one of the things I love about you most is your compassion for others. But you're still young and you don't realise there are some people that might take advantage of that compassion. Now, I want you to promise me that if he comes up to you again you'll just walk away. That should be clear enough."
Korenna (Torres): "I'm sure."

Jareth goes to leave, turning to say at the door: "And finish your tarin juice. It's good for you."
She obediently lifts the cup to her lips and takes a sip. As soon as he has gone she puts it down.
Korenna (Torres): "He's gone."
At once Dathan Alaris appears from hiding.
Dathan: "Let him go."
Korenna (Torres): "He's leaving for work soon. It's easier to wait."
Dathan: "You. This will only encourage me."
Korenna (Torres): "I hope so!" They laugh.
They are kissing passionately. She is thoroughly enjoying it but then....

....she recoils, horrified - his face is suddenly covered with terrible burns! Frightened, she backs away.

This wakes Torres up. The memory stays shockingly vivid.

Torres is reporting to Chakotay in his office.
Torres: "We've completed the modifications on the primary EPS conduits. I have a crew starting on the back-up systems."
Chakotay: "Will you get it done before we drop off the Enarans?"
Torres: "Er, yes. We'll have to pull some longer shifts but two more days should do it."

Chakotay notices that she seems distracted and enquires: "Is there something else on your mind?"
Torres: "Those dreams I've been having. They're getting kind of strange."
Chakotay: "In what way?"
Torres: "Last night, in the middle of the dream, I was kissing him, my lover, and suddenly he was dead, burned."
Chakotay: "B'Elanna-"
Torres: "There's more going on than just a love affair. I'm having a relationship with this man, but my father doesn't approve, so we have to sneak around. It's like each new dream advances the story."
Chakotay: "It sounds like a holonovel."
Torres: "It feels like it's actually happening. And physically, emotionally, it's no different from real life. I've never had dreams like this before."
Chakotay: "This can't be coincidence that this is going on while we have a group of telepaths on board."
Torres: "Exactly. I want to find out more about what these Enarans can do."
Chakotay: "Why don't you ask your friend in Engineering?"
Torres: "I'm going to."
Chakotay: "I'll talk to the Captain. She should know about anything that might involve our guests."
Torres: "Right."

In the corridor on her way back to Engineering, Torres' mind is suddenly transported into the world of her dream!

the Enaran flag
Again she has the persona of Korenna, Jareth's daughter. There is an Enaran civic ceremony taking place, being conducted by Jareth who is a civic leader. He addresses the waiting line of uniformed Enarans and the audience.

Jareth: "Once I stood where you are during the early days of interstellar exploration. It was an important leap forward for our people and I was proud to be part of it. Today, with the advent of terraforming, we stand ready to take another leap forward into an era of expansion and colonisation. You will show us the way. There are some who resist progress. Do not let the voices of fear and ignorance discourage you. Claim your rightful place as leaders of a new era. The future of Enara is in your hands."
The crowd applauds.

Jareth: "Now today we honour a group of young people who represent our best hope for that future. It is a great pleasure to give this first award to my own daughter, Korenna."
There is more applause as Korenna/(Torres) steps up to the podium to receive her citizenship award.

As he gives her the award he tells her: "I'm so very proud of you."

After the ceremony, she wanders in a colonnade and admires her award in a reflective surface.

Her attention is caught by Dathan who approaches her discreetly. As she admires her award, he tells her: "Looks good on you."
They keep to the shadows and converse in hushed voices, being as inconspicuous as possible, as they talk secretly.
Korenna/(Torres): "What are you doing here?"
Dathan: "Today's important for you. I wanted to be here."
Korenna/(Torres): "I'm glad you came. I know this award will help me get to the District Education Centre. I could be a Junior Instructor in less than a year!"
Dathan: "I'm really happy for you."
Korenna/(Torres): "Maybe you could take the entrance examination too."
Dathan: "That's impossible. I can't go to the Centre."
Korenna/(Torres): "Nothing's impossible if you want it badly enough. I want us to be together."
Dathan: "I love you, Korenna. It's just so frustrating. I can't stand being away from you all the time."
Korenna/(Torres): "Oh, I know."
Dathan: "Oh, I wish I could hold you right now."
Korenna/(Torres): "What would you do if you could?"
Dathan: "I'll show you." He does so, through telepathy, and they enjoy an intimate moment together.

But they are interrupted by the curfew bell tolling.
Dathan has to leave. "See you tonight."
Korenna/(Torres): "No! There's going to be a big dinner with my father's friends."
Dathan: "Tomorrow night then."
Korenna/(Torres) clings hopefully to the promise: "Tomorrow!"

Reluctantly Dathan leaves her and goes to the gate. The guards are chivvying through the gate those like Dathan whose presence is unwanted. A guard calls: "Have identification ready!" Other guards tell people: "This way out." and "Let's go!" She looks longingly after Dathan as he leaves. The gate clangs shut behind him, separating them.

In Voyager's engineering, concerned crewmembers look on as Torres collapses.

Kes bends over her, calling, "B'Elanna, can you hear me?" Kes taps her combadge. audio: combadgecombadge "Kes to Sickbay. Medical emergency."
