Inside the cave at the Voyager crew's camp on the planet, Ensign Wildman's baby is crying. Janeway comes over. Wildman: "She has a fever. I don't know what to do." Janeway: "Let me get her some water."

She comes outside and goes to a group of crewmembers. Janeway: "The baby needs water." A female crewmember hands her a cup of water. The ground shakes. Kim: "Those tremors seem to be getting stronger." Janeway: "Chakotay's team should have been back by now. We better look for them before it gets too hot. Get a few people together." Patting Kim on the back: "I'll join you in a second." She heads back to the cave with the water.

Outside the cave Chakotay's group are in, the tribe has started a fire to smoke out their quarry.

Inside the cave, as the group start coughing and spluttering, Chakotay tells them: "Come on. We have to see if there's another way out of here."

They move deeper inside the cave, following him, with Tuvok, the best armed with bow and arrows taking up the rear. As they go cautiously, there is a ground tremor and a slight rockfall. Further in, there is another tremor.

Kes: "I feel a breeze." Neelix: "It's coming from this way." They head the way he indicates, and enter a large cavern. Below them is a sleeping Hanonian land eel in its nest - this is the kind of creature that ate Hogan!

Outside the cave entrance, the tribe members are still chanting. The chief holds out a large talisman that he wears round his neck.

A little distance away, Janeway and Kim, armed with a rock and a crude wooden spear respectively, secretly spot them, then leave and head back to the rest of the main Voyager group.

Kim: "Do you really think Commander Chakotay would go in there after what happened to Hogan?" Janeway: "He may have had no other choice." Torres: "How do we get them away from the tunnels?" Kim: "A couple of phaser blasts would do the trick." Janeway: "Who are the fastest runners here?" Torres: "I was on the decathlon team before I quit the Academy. The track-and-field coach was furious with me." Janeway smiles. "Anyone else here who can run?"

Ayala volunteers, raising his hand: "Yeah." Janeway: "OK. You three will be the sprint team. Once you reach our camp, you should be safe."

Chakotay: "Which way do you like, Tuvok?" Tuvok: "From a tactical point of view, the options are not encouraging. However, moving past the creature might lead us to an exit." Chakotay: "Alright, let's take it slow. Single file."

They start to move past the creature.

Outside the cave, a spear suddenly lands in the ground among the tribe - it is a challenge!

The natives turn, to see three of the Voyager crew (Ayala, Torres and a female crewmember) gesturing confrontationally, hurling rocks at them. Torres: "Hey! Up here!" Ayala: "Come on!" Torres: "Up here. You want us? You want us? Come and get us! Come on! Come and get us!"

The angry natives give chase.

Janeway leads her group down to the cave entrance. Janeway, indicating the burning material: "Pull this." Gradually they clear the exit.

Inside the cave, Chakotay's group is moving gradually past the creature in single file. Suddenly a crewman slips and nearly falls off. They grab his arm, trying to haul him back up.

But the noise and movement wakes the creature!

Snarling, it rears up. Kes: "Look out!"

The creature snatches the crewman with its jaws and swallows him!

The rest of the group beat back the creature with sticks and arrows.

Outside the cave entrance, Janeway's group manages to clear a path into the cave. She hurries in, calling: "Chakotay! Tuvok!" Tuvok: "The tunnel is clear!" Chakotay, still beating back the creature with his spear: "Go! Everybody out!"

They flee. The creature rears up again, but only just in time the intruders escape its jaws. The creature climbs into the passageway in pursuit.

The Voyager crew, including Janeway's group, rush along the passageways. They reach the cave entrance. Janeway urges them into the open: "Move. Let's go. Go! Go! Go, go!" She peers back into the cave when Chakotay, Tuvok and Kim do not emerge.

Inside the cave, Tuvok calls to Chakotay: "Chakotay, your spear."

Together they lever down rocks from the ceiling, causing a rockfall that blocks off the tunnel between them and the pursuing creature. Chakotay: "Go, go, go!"

They reach the cave entrance. Janeway: "Come on, come on! Go!" All four rush away from the cave. They pause a short distance away, but as the dust rises and spews out from the entrance as the passage's roof gives way, Chakotay calls: "Come on!" They hurry off.

Meanwhile, on Voyager, inside a Jefferies tube, two Kazon, armed and wearing stolen Starfleet wrist-beacons, stop for a moment during their search for an intruder. Kazon engineer, looking at a tricoder: "I don't understand it. Thoron particles are leaking into the conduits from somewhere. I can't get any other readings. Check the next level." Kazon crewman: "Yes, sir."

The Kazon crewman climbs the ladder to the next level. He looks round, using the tricorder. He opens a hatch and continues the search. Nearby is Suder, in hiding.
