Part H

 

This is the start of Part Two as broadcast on television. Part Two starts Season Three.

Later, Janeway and Chakotay's team are walking out in the open. Ensign Samantha Wildman is carrying her baby. Ensign Brooks is just in front of her.

Chakotay hears Samantha Wildman's baby cry. He turns and goes to her. Chakotay: "Let me help you." Wildman: "No, really, I'm alright." Chakotay takes the baby: "Don't push yourself." He calls out: "That goes for everyone. Perspiring wastes water."

Janeway and Chakotay's group head toward a cave entrance.

Janeway: "Alright people, follow me. Let's take it slow."

The cave entrance widens into a cavern which is partly open to the sky. Janeway: "This is the most defensible location we've seen so far. The overhang should provide us with shelter, and the breeze should keep insects away. Alright, let's make camp!"

Elsewhere, Neelix's team is foraging and looking for shelter.

Hogan notices a cave entrance and calls Neelix over.

Hogan: "Neelix, look at this. They almost look constructed. Maybe the people on this world are cave-dwellers."

Neelix, referring to the set of bones at the entrance: "If that's true, I'd say this is a do-not-disturb sign, wouldn't you?"

He bends down and picks up one to look at. "They look humanoid. We might be able to use these as tools or weapons. Gather them up, Mr Hogan."

Hogan looks unhappy. Neelix: "Is there a problem?" Hogan: "No, sir. Do you want all of them?" Neelix: "Waste nothing. That's one of the first rules of survival." A female crewmember calls out: "Neelix, over here!" Neelix drops the bone and hurries over to her.

Hogan starts gathering the bones, his figure clearly visible from within the cave against the bright sunlight.

But a creature lives in the cave and senses him easily. It rushes toward him. Hogan hears it, turns, sees it, and screams.

Neelix and several crewmen rush over to the cave entrance. They cannot find him. Neelix shouts: "Hogan!"

Out in space, Paris is by an access panel in his shuttlecraft, trying to repair the damage the Kazon caused. Paris: "Computer, repeat stabiliser diagnostic." Computer: "Damage has been detected in the stabiliser acceleration sensors." Paris: "I just repaired the acceleration sensors." Computer: "Warning: vessel approaching on intercept course."

Paris: "Signature?" Computer: "Kazon patrol vessel." The shuttlecraft lurches as the Kazon ship opens fire. Paris, as he is rocked by the impact: "Uh!" He hurries back to the helm. "Damn it, I don't have time for this."

The Kazon ship fires five more times. "I don't have time for this!"

Paris: "Computer, all stop." The shuttlecraft stops dead and the Kazon ship is unable to react in time so that its momentum carries it past the shuttlecraft to leave it in Paris' sights. "Engage impulse."

He fires double phaser shots at the Kazon ship, firing three times (one volley is not seen on screen). The fourth shot is deadly - the Kazon ship explodes. Paris remarks: "I told you I don't have time for this." and the shuttlecraft veers away at impulse speed.

It is late evening, dark, and at the camp Chakotay shows Janeway's their grim find. Chakotay: "That's all that's left of Hogan's uniform, Captain. We didn't find anything else."

Neelix berates himself: "This is my fault. If I hadn't told Hogan to pick up those bones..." Kes: "You shouldn't blame yourself, Neelix."

Janeway, firmly: "Stop it. There's no time to worry about blame. Hogan was a fine officer and a good man. And our job is to make sure his death is the last one for a long time! I will not let this planet destroy my crew! Kes, see to it that everyone knows the tunnels are off-limits. I want clear safety protocols established. Mr Tuvok, we need weapons."

Tuvok: "I have already begun to design some rudimentary devices, Captain." Janeway: "What's our food and water status?" Chakotay: "I know it sounds grisly, but I can make solar stills with the material from this uniform. We could have water tomorrow." Janeway: "Do it."

Neelix: "Captain, none of the search teams were able to find plants of any nutritional value." Janeway: "Then tell the crew to start turning over rocks." She does so herself, finds and picks up a handful of grubs.

She holds out her hand to show people. "If anyone baulks at eating these, tell them it's an order from their captain. They may be the difference between life and death."
