Q2 shrugs acknowledgement and Q sighs, mildly irritated. Q gestures with his hand. There is a bright white flash and all the men immediately appear, in the same positions as when they left.

The men are aware that something has happened and look round.

Kim looks round.
Chakotay, concerned at the appearance of intruders on the Bridge, steps towards Janeway and the Qs.

Q peers closely at Chakotay and remarks: "Facial art. How very wilderness of you."
When Chakotay queries, "Captain?"

Janeway holds up a hand to belay his understandable curiosity.

Q: "Alright, Q, we should be going."
Q2: "I'm not leaving! Captain Janeway, I demand asylum!"
Q: "This is a joke."
Q2: "No it isn't. I am officially asking you, Captain, to grant me asylum and give me protection from my enemies, which is him." He points at Q.

Q: "You would ask these puny humans to protect you from me? Fat chance."
As Q raises his arm to whisk himself and Q2 away in a Q-flash, Q2 makes his own sweeping gesture and Q disappears.

The ship starts shaking. The amount of juddering increases alarmingly.

Janeway: "What did you do to him?"
Q2: "Nothing. He's still there in the 24th century. I just took the rest of us to an old hiding place of mine."

When Janeway orders a report, Kim replies: "Captain, there are no stars outside."

Q2: "Well, that's partially correct. Actually, there's no universe outside."
Janeway: "On screen. Commander?"
Chakotay: "I'm showing a large buildup of baryon particles."
Q2: "Perfectly normal."

Tuvok: "Captain, based on our readings, it appears that we've been transported back in time to the birth of the universe."
Q2: "Very old hiding place."

There is a bright flash and Q appears next to Torres. He tells Q2: "No, I know all the hiding places, Q. I hid here from the Continuum myself once."

Torres to Janeway: "This ship will not survive the formation of the cosmos."
Q: "Yes, but just think of the honour of having your DNA spread from one corner of the universe to the other. Why you could be the origin of the humanoid form."

Janeway: "Q! Either Q! Get us out of here!"
Q to Q2: "You heard the lady, Q. Back to your cell."

But Q2 gestures and there is another flash. Q is suddenly gone, but now the ship is being bombarded.

Paris: "We're under attack."
Chakotay: "By a ship?"
Paris: "By, by, I'm not sure what they are."

Kim: "Captain, I don't believe this, but according to my readings, we're being attcked by protons! We've been reduced to subatomic proportions!"

Q2 waves his hand, there is another flash and Q is gone again. The ship is not being bombarded any more but it is not obvious where Voyager has ended up.

Q2: "He'll never find us here."
Janeway, walking over to Tuvok's station: "Mr Tuvok, see if you can release a positive ion charge to repel them."
There is a flash and Q appears on the Bridge again: "Ready or not, here I am." Janeway turns toward him.

A. Janeway, testily: "Now what?"

B. Paris: "Checking." He checks the instruments.

C. Paris: "We seem to be tethered to some kind of large plant."

D. Janeway: "Let's see it. Computer, I need a wider angle."

They are one of the decorations on the top of a Christmas tree!

As the viewscreen camera pans round, Q's face comes into close-up view as he peers into the Bridge.
Q: "You can't hide from me, Q."

Q2: "And you can't take me by force. I'll stalemate you for eternity if I have to."

Janeway, now angry: "The hell you will!" Addressing both Qs: "The vaunted Q Continuum, self-anointed guardians of the universe. How dare you come aboard this ship and endanger this crew with your personal tug-of-war."

Q to Janeway: "Did anyone ever tell you you're angry when you're beautiful?"
There is a flash and Q is back on the Bridge, and Paris reports: "We're back where we started from, Captain." i.e. near the comet which was once Q2's prison.

"Stop!"

Q: "Oh so touchably soft."

Q2: "If you rule in my favour, the Continuum must grant me mortality."

Q2 to Q: "Doesn't matter. I'm not going back into that cell again."
Q to Q2: "How would you like to spend eternity as a Gorokian midwife toad?"
Q2 to Q: "Oh just try it."
Janeway has finally had enough. "Stop!" To Q2: "You want asylum. Fine. We'll have a hearing."
Q: "A hearing? You would have me put his future into your delicate little hands?" He takes Janeway's left hand in his and comments: "Oh so touchably soft. What is your secret, my dear?"
Janeway removes her hand from his and addresses both Qs. "When the captain of a Starfleet vessel receives an official request for asylum there is a clear procedure to follow. I suggest, to end your deadlock and to save my ship, that we follow it to the letter."
Q: "Well, this could go on for a millennium or two, I suppose. Alright, I accept on behalf of the Continuum, on one condition - if you rule in our favour Q agrees to return to his confinement."
Q2: "I have a condition of my own. If you rule in my favour, the Continuum must grant me mortality."
Q: "Why? So you can kill yourself?"
Q2: "Exactly."
Janeway is concerned, a fact Q notices when he says: "Accepted. Well, this is going to make for an amusing diversion. Will you send him to prison for eternity or will you assist with his suicide plan? That's a toughie, but then that's why they made you captain, isn't it, to handle the tough ones? My, my, I guess now we'll get to find out if the pants really fit."
