Janeway knocks on Darod's door. There is no reply. Caylem: "This is a waste of time. We don't need him anyway." Janeway: "I need him. If he's a member of the Resistance, he may be able to help me contact my ship."
	Augris and a patrol enter the street. When Caylem sees him he mutters with loathing: "Monster!"
	Quickly Janeway takes Caylem into hiding, afraid that Caylem will attract attention.
	In hiding, Janeway learns the reason for Caylem's hatred: "Please, Ralkana. He's the one. He took your mother! We have to-" Janeway: "They want a fight? Don't give them one."

They watch as Augris intimidates several people. One, who is frightened, protests: "I've done nothing."
Augris accosts another individual: "You look like a helpful citizen. So tell me, you might've seen some strangers in the marketplace earlier today."
Frightened citizen: "No, sir. I've seen no one. Please-"

	She watches aghast as Darod, the member of the Resistance she was hoping to contact, is accosted by the Mokra patrol. Augris: "You! I'm looking for someone, a woman." Darod: "I haven't seen any woman."
	Augris turns him to point him at two prostitutes. Mockingly: "There are two, right over here. You see them, don't you?"
	Augris' tone is calm but threatening. "Maybe we should discuss this elsewhere." His guards start to drag Darod away.
	Suddenly Caylem rushes into the street. "Caylem!" Janeway is unable to stop him in time. Deliberately Caylem plays a mad old fool, making people laugh at him. For as they laugh at him, they do not consider him dangerous.
	Caylem, his antics designed to draw Augris' attention, goes up to various people in the crowd: "Good morning!" With inane bright grins and making silly faces which make people laugh at him: "I seem to have lost my hat! Have you seen my hat?"
	Augris is not as amused. "Run along, old man." Caylem: "Without my hat?"

While the attention of Augris and the soldiers is fixed on Caylem, Darod slips quietly away.

	Janeway looks on.
	Augris has his own sense of humour. He takes a piece of fruit from a stall and upends it on Caylem's head as a mock hat, and stuffs another piece in Caylem's mouth, cruelly humilating him: "There you go."

Augris' jest amuses his accompanying guards and the crowd plays along with this senior Mokra official by also laughing. Augris and the guards leave the street. As one guard leaves, he cheerily pats Caylem on his right cheek.

Janeway hurries over. Already fond of the old man, she is upset and sad on his behalf that people laughed at him, but she is moved by his bravery. Caylem: "It's alright now. They've gone." Hastily she removes the "hat" and hurries him away.

	In the prison cell, Torres removes the bench's thin hard mattress and upends the base of the bench to use as a ladder.
	As she climbs up, in the distance she hears a man's scream as he is tortured, a harrowing sound.

On Voyager's bridge, at the helm, there is a council of war. Neelix: "The prison is in the north-east corner of the city. My sources tell me it's surrounded by metaphasic shields."

Chakotay: "Can we find a way to beam through them? The Mokra aren't familiar with transporter technology?" Kim: "There is a periodic fluctuation in the shield's energy pattern. I'm working on a way to take advantage of it." Neelix: "There's only one problem with that. If the Mokra detect us breaking through their shields we'll be surrounded by soldiers in seconds." Paris: "If we could beam in close enough to where the away team is being held, we might be able to get in and out of there before the Mokra have a chance to react."

Kim: "We can't locate the away team from here. The detention level is subterranean and the rock is too dense for our sensors to penetrate. You'll have to look for them after you beam into the prison." Chakotay: "Too dangerous. We can't risk beaming in. We'll have to find another way that the Mokra won't detect. Sounds like a challenge for you, Mr Kim."

Janeway, Darod and Caylem meet. Janeway and Darod talk, while Caylem hovers a little distance away, watching and listening. They talk in low voices so as not attract attention. Darod: "You'd be welcome to use our transmitter if we still had it. The Mokra confiscated it this morning." Janeway: "Then I'll have to find my crewmembers myself. I know two of them were arrested. What about Neelix?" Darod: "He stayed inside with me then got transported up to your ship." Janeway: "Good. What can you tell me about the prison?" Caylem interjects: "I know about the prison." Janeway: "We need all the information we can get. I have to reach my crew." Darod: "Don't you think there are people in there I'd like to get out? Any sane person would tell you it's impossible." Caylem: "Spoken like a coward." Darod turns on Caylem: "I've heard about you, old man. You're the coward." Janeway: "Enough." Darod to Janeway: "What are you doing with this lunatic? Has he been telling you stories of his brave deeds? They're fantasies. Taking him along on this rescue mission is suicide." Janeway: "He's already saved me from the Mokra once, and he saved you from those soldiers today." Darod: "Alright. Stay with him. Go after the prison. Get yourself killed." Janeway: "I don't have to get killed if you tell me what you know." Darod: "There are access tunnels on the north side. They'll get you in a little closer but they're guarded." Janeway: "Then I'll need weapons." Darod: "They're not free." Janeway: "I don't have anything to trade." Darod indicates the necklace. "That's worth some weapons." Janeway: "I can't." Caylem: "Yes you can. If it'll help to bring her back to us." Janeway to Caylem: "Thank you." Darod: "I can have someone meet you on the street in three hours to make the trade. He'll be wearing a blue vest. Watch for him." Janeway: "We will. Thank you." Darod: "I'd wish you luck but what you'll need is a miracle."

	Part of the city.
	Janeway and Caylem are waiting for the contact. Janeway: "He's more than three hours late. We have to consider the possibility that he's been arrested." What Darod told Janeway has been eating at Caylem. At last he tells her: "You mustn't believe what he told you about me." Janeway: "I don't believe it. You're not a coward." Caylem confesses: "I had to keep my little girl safe. It was just too dangerous to get involved, can you understand? Your mother wouldn't listen. She wanted to fight. She was always so passionate about what she believed in. She didn't care about the risk." Janeway: "You're proud of her."
	Caylem: "I didn't want to lose her. I didn't want you to grow up without a mother. I tried so hard to change her mind, then finally she changed mine. She convinced me to go with her. They said I would meet her by the river. She was leading a raid against a Mokra supply centre. I said I would meet her, but I didn't. I couldn't, I was too afraid. She was still waiting for me when they arrested her. I never told you about this. I knew you would hate me. I couldn't bear that. Please, Ralkana, if you can ever forgive me."
	Janeway hugs him.
	Janeway sees something. Caylem: "What is it?" Janeway: "A blue vest." Caylem: "Then it's time to go."
	They walk up behind the Alsaurian man wearing the blue vest, but just as Janeway is about to contact him....
	.....she notices that he has polished black boots. Quickly she moves herself and Caylem away.
	Caylem: "What happened?" Janeway: "He was wearing military boots like the Mokra. It was a trap." Caylem: "Trap? And you saw it, my clever girl. We'll be alright. We have each other. That's all we'll need." Janeway: "It's not that simple. We can't just walk into the prison without weapons."
	Her attention is drawn as prostitutes walk past laughing and chatting to each other. This gives Janeway an idea. She tells Caylem: "Maybe we'll have to try a different strategy."
