Part D
Chakotay's flashbacks to his youth are noted in this style, and words directly translated from the old tribal language are in this style.
The expedition is surrounded.
One of the youths in the expedition rushes to retrieve his weapon, but Kolopak holds him back just as a warning arrow lands in the ground.
Kolopak faces the man who appears to be the natives' leader. Kolopak removes his pack, then his hat, all the time keeping eye-contact with the leader and moving slowly so that the natives realise he is not a threat. Then he crouches on the ground.....
 | .....and draws a Chah-mooz-ee. |
 | Kolopak addresses the native Chief in the ancient tribal language: "Chah-mooz-ee. I honour the sacred land of the Sky Spirits. I have come very far to find you, my cousins." |
 | Native chief: "How do you know our language? |
 | Kolopak: "It is the language of my ancestors." |
As Kolopak gestures, the native Chief seizes his hands and examines them, concluding: "We are of the same hand."
They rise to their feet. The Chief seizes a spear, then dramatically makes the significant gesture of hurling it away - it means peace and friendship.
 | Kolopak, relieved, smiles broadly, nods and makes a gesture of friendship to the Chief. |
 | At this, the Chief signals to his people who then crowd back into the village, laughing and chatting, to make friends with the visitors. The pleased Chief gives a small smile, which Kolopak shares. |
 | Young Chakotay is shy but manages a nervous smile as the natives mill around him. |
 | The away team wander around the deserted village. Chakotay, recalling his experience in the jungle, raises his hands to those he suspects are watching. |
 | Suddenly a strong wind picks up.
Tuvok, having to shout to make himself heard: "I have no explanation, Commander. There is no storm activity indicated."
Chakotay: "Alright. Let's get back to the shuttle!" |
 | But as they make their way, a storm ensues. They dodge a falling tree, but while Torres and Tuvok go one way past it, Chakotay takes the other path and is separated from the others. |
As he travels, with difficulty keeping his step on the uneven terrain, he glimpses a native ahead of him who quickly disappears.
Chakotay calls to the alien native: "Hey, wait!" but it is too late.
 | Suddenly a tree falls towards him and he automatically flings up his arms to try and protect himself! |
 | The tree knocks him to the ground and he is pinned there. |
 | Tuvok: "We will never make it."
Torres: "Where is Chakotay?" |
 | Chakotay's combadge is also beamed up, but it has fallen off and he is not wearing it! |
 | | |
As Chakotay falls unconscious, he fleetingly glimpses the image of the stranger.
    | Voyager's bridge.
Torres: "He was right behind us. I don't understand what could've happened to him."
Janeway: "Was he wearing the combadge the last time you saw him?"
Tuvok: "Just before the storm, he was using it to speak with you, Captain."
Janeway: "Mr Paris, what are the current surface conditions near the shuttle?"
Paris: "Surface conditions are back to normal, Captain. Winds two knots. But I can't find any sign of their shuttle. It's not where they landed it."
Janeway: "And it isn't airborne?"
Paris: "No, ma'am."
Janeway: "I'll lead the away team back. Mr Tuvok, Lieutenant, you're with me. Mr Paris, you have the-"
The com. signal sounds. Via comms: "Captain Janeway, this is the Doctor. Please turn to your Emergency Medical Holographic channel."
Janeway: "What is it, Doctor?"
Doctor, on monitor: "Something terrible has happened. My program-" His voice is very hoarse and he is coughing.
Janeway: "Doctor, I think you're carrying this experiment of yours a little too far."
Doctor, on monitor: "One hour too far to be precise. I very specifically programmed a 29-hour Levodian flu, and it has now been 30 hours!"
Janeway, via comms: "Doctor, I'm sorry but we have more pressing matters to-"
Doctor, on monitor, with a whiny and cranky attitude: "You can't leave me like this. I need help! Now get me somebody who can tweak the computer and make me feel better, immediately." He coughs.
Janeway, via comms: "Very well. Mr Kim is on his way. Try to relax, Doctor." |
 | Kes, via comms: "I'll see to that, Captain."
Janeway, via comms: "I'm going to need you with me, Kes. Prepare a medkit and bring it with you to Transporter Room 3. Commander Chakotay is still on the surface and may be injured."
Janeway, via comms: "Janeway out." |
 | Doctor: "Oh, I don't understand it. I, I ran a computer diagnostic and it said my program was fine."
Kes helps him onto a biobed: "Just rest, Doctor."
Doctor: "Ah." |
 | Kes: "Here's a cool holographic towel for your forehead."
Doctor: "Thank you, thank you so much. Please, don't go yet."
Kes: "I have to. The Captain-"
Doctor, whining: "I feel like I'm fading, just fading away. You don't know what that means to a hologram." |
 | Doctor: "Oh, my simulated virus is leading me to a simulated death." |
 | Kes: "It's nothing to worry about. I just added a couple of hours to his computer program. He'll be fine in about 45 minutes. Knowing when it would end didn't exactly make it a fair test, did it, Doctor?" |
 | Kim is amused. Kes leaves Sickbay, heading for the transporter room. |
 | Doctor: "She is far more devious than I ever suspected." He has another coughing fit. |
