![]() | In Sickbay the Doctor does a scan of Janeway.
Doctor: "I don't detect anything so far: no evidence of aneurism, subdural haematoma, stroke..." Janeway: "Could it be stress?" Doctor: "Possibly. Did you go to the Holodeck as I ordered?" Janeway: "Yes." Doctor: "And was that relaxing?" Janeway: "It was interesting. I'm not sure how relaxing it was." |
![]() | Doctor: "There are other possibilities we should consider. I want to scan for airborne bacteria and viruses; we should investigate the possibility of an alien intruder. And I'd like to do a cerebral cortical scan on you." Suddenly Kes shivers violently. "Kes?"
Kes: "I don't know. Strange! Suddenly I felt cold, shivery." Janeway: "Someone was walking on your grave." She explains: "Just an old saying on Earth - a way of describing an odd feeling like that." Doctor: "How macabre." Janeway: "It's a human expression, Doctor. I'd think you'd've heard it." Doctor: "My programmers didn't clutter me up with pithy Earth trivia. They programmed me with far more important data. Kes, would you please get my subneural scanner from the medlab?" Kes: "Yes, Doctor." She goes into the medlab. |
![]() | Suddenly Beatrice appears and challenges Janeway. "What about my mother's grave?! There's no one inside. The coffin is empty."
Janeway: "Doctor! Doctor, who do you see?" Doctor: "I see you." Janeway: "And I see you. But I also see a little girl from my holodeck program." |
![]() | Kes returns from the medlab. She sees Beatrice! | ![]() |
![]() | She mentally staggers, as if attacked. But then Kes's mind reasserts itself and she sees the image of Beatrice rushing towards Janeway.....and then right into her! | ![]() |
![]() | Doctor: "What happened?"
Janeway: "I'm not sure. The image of the little girl suddenly rushed at me." |
![]() | So Janeway enters her private quarters. She goes to the replicator. "Vegetable bouillon. No, cancel that. Coffee ice cream."
|
![]() | While eating the ice cream, she hears a noise from the bedroom. "Hello?" She puts down the ice cream and goes to investigate. "Is anyone there?" | ![]() |
![]() | Janeway: "Computer, is there anyone in these quarters except me?"
Computer: "Negative." She hears what sounds like Mark's voice, saying, "Kath, are you there?" "Who's that? Mark?" She even hears the bark of her pet dog! She turns on the light in her bedroom. |
![]() | But the room is empty! | ![]() |
![]() | Warily Janeway returns to the living room. |
![]() | As she sits down, she looks across to the picture of Mark, herself and her pet dog.
The voice of Mark says: "I've missed you so much, Kath. When are you coming back? I don't think you've missed me. Someone else is in your thoughts now." She knows he means Lord Burleigh. |

![]() | Janeway goes to leave her quarters but the door does not open. She tries the door control. The voice continues: "Isn't that true? Isn't there someone you're thinking of?" |
![]() | Janeway orders: "Computer, open the door."
It opens....to reveal the holographic character Mrs Templeton - carrying a large knife! Mrs Templeton bears down on Janeway, hissing at her: "Everything was fine until you came here. I took care of him. He trusted me. When you arrived, all that changed." Janeway clicks her combadge: "Janeway to security. Intruder alert." Mrs Templeton: "You've done nothing but cause trouble. We don't want more trouble in our lives!" |
![]() | Mrs Templeton attacks, and the blade wounds Janeway in the hand! | ![]() |
![]() | Janeway struggles with Mrs Templeton, shouting desperately, "Security to the captain's quarters! Tuvok! Please respond!" She manages to wrestle Mrs Templeton to the ground but the struggle continues.... |
![]() | ....but Janeway is really in Sickbay, hallucinating, and there is no Mrs Templeton! Tuvok calls to her: "Captain!"
The Doctor asks Kes: "Can you still see the hallucination?" Kes: "Yes, the woman with the knife is receding into the captain, just like before." |
![]() | Tuvok again calls to Janeway: "Captain, listen to me! You are in Sickbay. You are alright. Captain!"
She finally hears him and the hallucination ends. She looks at her hands - there is no wound! |
![]() | Tuvok, Kes and the Doctor watch Janeway, very concerned about her. | ![]() |

![]() | In Sickbay, Janeway is briefing Chakotay to take over from her for a few days while she remains in Sickbay. Chakotay listens patiently, but it is clear that he is more than capable of handling matters and he is amused at her eagerness to brief him on everything and the fact that she seems hardly aware that he is there as she concentrates on trying to remember to tell him everything that might be important.
Janeway: "I think Neelix can help you. No one knows much about the Botha but he has some information." Chakotay: "I know he's been doing research. I'll check with him." Janeway: "You'll probably want him on the Bridge with you when their ship arrives." Chakotay: "Good idea." Janeway: "I'm not sure how Torres and Kim are coming. You know they're trying to find a way to transfer the Doctor out of Sickbay? It's not a priority but you might want to stay on top of it." Chakotay: "Of course." Janeway: "Now let's see. There was a problem with one of the deflector shields. You'll want to follow up on that. And Stellar Cartography was hoping for a review of their latest report. I think Tuvok wanted to discuss something about weapons storage-" Finally Chakotay interrupts: "Captain, you've trained your crew well. We'll be able to do without you for a few days. In the meantime, we're continuing diagnostics on all ship's systems. There's a reason for what's happening to you and we're not stopping until we find it." Janeway: "Thank you, Commander." The Doctor and Kes come out of the office. The Doctor tells Chakotay firmly: "My patient has to rest now. I'm sure you'll want to get to the Bridge." Chakotay to Janeway as he leaves: "Call me if there's anything I can do." Janeway calls after him: "Just be sure to report to me after you meet with the Botha!" Chakotay: "Yes, ma'am." Doctor to Janeway: "Captain, if you'd like to take a seat on one of the beds, I'd like to do some further tests." To Kes: "Kes, please prepare the Captain for a cerebro-cortical scan. Kes: "Certainly." To Janeway: "Captain, I saw your hallucination again." Janeway: "What did you see?" Kes: "You were struggling with a woman. She had a knife. She was trying to hurt you." Janeway: "That's right." Kes: "As I focussed on you, it was just like with the little girl. The image seemed to reflect off of me and move back into you." Janeway: "Your telepathic abilities must be increasing." Kes: "I think it's more than that. I think something strange is happening on this ship and it's not just happening to you." |
