PERSISTENCE OF VISION : Episode 24

Part B

Neelix and Janeway enter the Messhall.
Neelix: "Captain, you have a nasty habit of skipping meals and that can do horrible things to your electrolyte levels."
Janeway: "I know, but sometimes I just get too busy to eat."
On the serving counter are set a line of plates, each filled with mouthwatering food, ready for self-service.
Neelix: "All you have to do is give me a call. I'll be there in a trice with a tray of food so delectable you won't be able to resist. I do think I've outdone myself this time." He serves Janeway's plate himself: "An exquisite paté made from seltin wood fungus,..."

"....brine-soaked nessel strips, devilled wood throck."

But the next plate is a plate of cucumber sandwiches, just like in her holonovel!
Janeway: "Where did these come from?"
Neelix: "Lieutenant Hargrove asked for them. Is something wrong?"
Janeway: "Oh no, just a funny coincidence, something I saw on the Holodeck." She puts the sandwich back on the plate. "Thank you, Neelix. This all looks delicious and it's bound to boost my electrolyte levels."
(Crewman McKenzie can be seen at the counter, in the background.)
She suddenly stops as Neelix pours tea into a flower cup, just like the one the holocharacter Beatrice dropped and broke on the Holodeck!

Janeway: "Where did you get that cup?!"
Neelix: "Well, I'm not sure. I think I found several of them in storage. Unusual isn't it. Captain, is everything alright?"
Janeway: "Oh, perfectly alright, Neelix. I just have to remind myself that coincidences do happen."

Lt. Ayala passes Janeway in the corridor. As he stands and waits for the turbolift, Janeway suddenly hears the voice of Lord Burleigh: "I can't help myself. I've fallen in love with you." Startled, she turns to see if it is Ayala who has spoken, but he has said nothing. The turbolift doors open, and he enters.

Janeway then sees the back of Beatrice disappearing round the corner of the corridor!

She hurries after her, and comes upon Beatrice who confronts her: "My mother is alive, and my father loves her, not you!"

Janeway cannot believe her eyes!

The corridor is empty.

Janeway returns to Engineering to question Kim and Torres.
Janeway: "In the course of your experiments with the Doctor have you accessed any of the Holodeck programs?"
Torres: "No, we're bypassing the Holodecks."
Janeway: "Where did you get this holo-projector?"
Kim: "We found several of them in storage. We've been reconfiguring them one by one."
Janeway: "So you haven't worked directly with any of the projectors on the Holodeck?"
Torres: "No."

Janeway: "Is there anything you've done, anything you can think of, that might cause holographic objects and characters to appear outside the Holodeck?"
Torres: "Not that I'm aware of."
Janeway: "I was sure your experiments would explain it."
Torres: "Captain, there has to be a reason why you've had these delusions, and we're going to figure out what it is."
Janeway: "The Doctor pointed out that I've been under some stress. I can't ignore that."
Kim: "I think we should check out the imaging systems on the Holodeck. There might be a simple malfunction."
Janeway: "Good idea."
Torres: "We can run the diagnostic from here in Engineering, but you should activate the program first."
Janeway: "I'll contact you from the Holodeck."
She hurries away.

Janeway accesses the computer controls on the Holodeck, which are concealed within a Victorian cabinet. She activates the holocharacter Lord Burleigh.
Janeway, via comms: "Janeway to Engineering."
Torres, via comms: "Torres here."
Janeway, via comms: "Have you set up the diagnostic?"
Torres, via comms: "Ready, Captain."
Janeway, via comms: "Go ahead."
Immediately she closes comms. contact, the holocharacter Lord Burleigh hurries in, delighted to see her again.
Lord Burleigh: "Lucy, thank God you've come back! Why are you dressed so strangely?"
Janeway thinks quickly. "It's a costume."
Lord Burleigh: "You'd look lovely in anything. I've thought of you constantly, remembered your touch, your perfume, your lips-"
As he bends to kiss her, Janeway forces herself to concentrate on the diagnostic in hand. "Computer, delete character."
Torres, via comms: "Torres to Janeway. We're finished, Captain, but we didn't find any malfunctions."
Janeway, via comms: "Recalibrate and try it again. I'm going to check something else."
Torres, via comms: "Aye, Captain."

In the Galley, Neelix is preparing food when Janeway appears at the serving counter window.
Neelix: "Captain! I'm delighted to see you! Do you want a snack?"
Janeway: "No, I'm fine. But I wanted to ask you about lunch."
Neelix: "Didn't you like it?"
Janeway: "It was delicious. I was just trying to remember all the dishes you made. There was the seltin paté-"
Neelix: "Delectable."
Janeway: "The nessel strips-"
Neelix: "Exquisite!"
Janeway: "The devilled throck-"
Neelix: "Sublime."
Janeway: "And the cucumber sandwiches."
Neelix: "Cucumber sandwiches?"
Janeway: "Weren't there cucumber sandwiches?"
Neelix: "I don't even know what that is. The other item on the menu was a fried mirt cake - you ate one."
Janeway: "And the cup you served my tea in?"
Neelix: "One of these, the ones I found in storage."
Janeway: "I thought it had flowers on it."
Neelix: "Flowers. Well, no, no, I don't see any flowers. Maybe there was another cup but I don't think so. Would you like a cup with flowers on it? I'm sure I could replicate one."
Janeway: "It's alright, Neelix. You've told me what I need to know."
