The awakened 37's, once they get over their initial disorientation, emerge from the stasis units and gather in the larger open area near the entrance, clamouring to know what is happening. Janeway faces them all and tries to calm them. "I know this must be very strange for you." One man (later identified as Noonan): "Who are you? What is going on here?" Japanese soldier (named Nogami): "I demand you release me immediately!"

Janeway: "If you just listen to me for a moment I'll try to explain." Nogami, amazed: "You are all speaking Japanese." Farmer to Nogami: "To me it sounds like you're speaking English!"

	Janeway: "It's because of a device we have - a universal translator." She indicates her combadge. "It allows us to talk to each other even though our languages aren't the same." Janeway explains about the universal translator
	Earhart: "Who are you people?" Farmer: "Look, just let us go. We won't tell anybody." Noonan: "The hell we won't! I'm going to let the world know what you people have done. Do you know who you kidnapped here? Amelia Earhart. I'm her navigator. This is going to be headline news. You people are in trouble."
	Earhart: "Fred, let her talk."

Janeway: "What I'm going to tell is going to sound hard to believe, even preposterous. We think you were abducted from Earth in the 1930s and brought millions of miles through space to a planet on the other side of the galaxy." The 37's respond with disbelief. "You were put into a kind of deep sleep for a very long time. It's not the 1930s any more. The year is 2371, over four hundred years from the time you were abducted."
Earhart: "You must think we're awfully gullible."
Janeway: "Tell me, what's the last thing you remember before waking up here?"
Earhart: "We were over the Pacific, running low on gas, and looking for an atoll to set down. We tried to send out an S.O.S. and suddenly there was this huge light in back of us, and the plane stopped dead, and then it started running backward toward the light. I must've blacked out, and I woke up here just now."
Farmer: "That's the way it was with me. I was in my truck heading into town when this big light come down from the sky, just about blinded me. Next thing I know the whole truck is lifted up off the ground."
Janeway: "I believe what happened was that you were abducted by aliens, and if we can find out how they got you here we might all be able to get back to Earth."

Noonan draws a gun and points it at Janeway. "I want some real answers now!" Janeway: "I assure you I am telling the truth." Noonan indicates one of his fellow-37's: "You," indicating the farmer. "Come on down here and get those funny-looking guns of theirs." The man does so. Noonan orders Kes: "You, get over there with the others."

	Earhart takes the tricorder from Kes' hand as she walks past. "What is this?" She opens it curiously. The lights and sounds as the tricorder starts up startles a 37's male watching them. Kes: "It's a medical device. I'm just trying to make sure everyone is alright."
	Noonan: "Now. How do we get out of here?" Chakotay, via comms: "Chakotay to away team." The 37's look up and around, wondering where his voice is coming from.
	Janeway, via comms: "Janeway here." Chakotay, via comms: "Captain, I'm picking some energy displacement on the surface. I think it may be alien humanoids. It looks like they're using some kind of deflection system to trick our sensors. I think you'd better get up here."
	Noonan demands: "Who's that talking?" Janeway: "It's Commander Chakotay, on our ship." Noonan: "Commander, huh? Ok, now hear this, Commander. There's a gun pointed at the lady's head right now, so you call Washington and you tell them we're holding your people prisoner. They're not going any where until I personally to J. Edgar Hoover. You've got one hour." Chakotay, via comms: "Captain?" Janeway: "It seems we're being held hostage, Commander. I suggest you pay attention to what the gentleman says." Chakotay, via comms: "I understand. Chakotay out."

Tuvok orders: "All security personnel report to the cargo bay immediately." He and Chakotay enter the turbolift.

Earhart taps her compass. She tells Noonan: "The compass isn't working."

Janeway: "I know what we've told you sounds hard to believe but there was a time when no one believed a woman could fly across the Atlantic. Now people are able to travel between the stars. The galaxy is full of many different species. For instance, this young woman," indicating Kes, "isn't human."

	Kes allows Janeway to turn her head to one side and move away her hair to reveal her left ear. "She's Ocampa." Earhart is sceptical. "I've been on expeditions all over the world and I've seen people do all kinds of strange things to their bodies. That doesn't mean that Martians have invaded Earth."
	Kim: "Actually, it was the other way around. Mars was colonised by people from Earth in 2103."
	Noonan: "That's enough. All of you just go over there and sit down, and keep quiet!" The Voyager crew obey.
	But Janeway has given Earhart pause for thought.

	In Voyager's cargo bay, Tuvok oversees the handing out of phaser rifles to the security personnel.
	Chakotay: "The trinimbic interference has affected the transporter's targetting scanners. We can't beam into the chamber so we'll have to go on foot." Tuvok: "We will deploy throughout the caves, sealing off any exit from the chamber." Chakotay: "Let's go."
