Part E

Meanwhile, Chakotay tries to evade his pursuers.

One security guards tells another: "He turned into the accessway."
The other replies: "I'll call for reinforcements."

Suddenly Chakotay finds himself backed up against a forcefield, and no way down to the lower levels, with the security guards blocking his only way out.

the view of the city that the trapped Chakotay sees - the lower level is a long way down, and there is a forcefield in the way

Chakotay smashes the forcefield control panel, thus eliminating the forcefield.

A security guard arrives but finds the forcefield control panel smashed and no sign of the fugitive. Cautiously he moves toward the safety rail and reaches out a hand, to find the forcefield is down.

The security guard activates his Quarren combadge and signals control: "He's deactivated a safety field. Alert emergency medical. He may have tried to jump-"

Suddenly Chakotay attacks him from behind.

Chakotay wrestles the gun away from the guard. The gun clatters onto the gantry a short distance away.

Chakotay picks up the gun. The guard tackles him as he bends over to pick it up but Chakotay manages to throw him off.

The second security guard arrives, firing at Chakotay. Chakotay is hit in the arm. The pain and the force of the blast slam him back against the railing.

With desperate determination, Chakotay fights the pain and manages to fire at the approaching guard, felling him.

When the first guard tries to renew his attack, Chakotay turns and fires at him too. The blast knocks the guard to the ground.

Chakotay staggers away, stepping over the fallen guard in the accessway. Chakotay is carrying the gun and clutching his injury.

Voyager flees attacking ships whose weapons pound on Voyager's shields.

Kim: "I can't penetrate their shields!"

The Doctor is at the helm. He says: "Maybe we don't have to. The Battle of Orkada, it's in my tactical database: a Romulan captain disabled two attacking vessels by creating a photonic shockwave between the ships."
Kim: "How d'you do that?"

Voyager fires photon torpedoes.

Doctor: "Watch and learn." He fires a torpedo and explodes it, creating a shockwave. The attacking ships are disabled. "I don't think they'll be bothering us again."

Kim: "Good work. Let's go back for Chakotay."
Doctor: "Five more ships on an intercept course."
Kim: "What's your tactical database telling you now?"
Doctor: "Transporters are damaged. Shields are failing. We have to retreat, come up with a new plan."
Kim: "Agreed."

Chakotay returns cautiously to Umali's bar. No one takes any notice of him.

He takes a seat at an out-of-the-way table and discreetly assesses the extent of his wound.

Suddenly he has to hide his injury as Janeway approaches his table.
Janeway: "Listen, I'm sorry about my friend."
Chakotay: "Excuse me?"
Janeway: "Jaffen - he wasn't very nice when I invited you to join us." She notices he seems drawn and preoccupied. "Are you alright?"
Chakotay: "I'm just a little tired - first day on a new job."
Janeway: "I know how that can be. Well, I just thought I'd let you know you're more than welcome to sit with us."
Chakotay: "Actually, I was thinking about going home."
Janeway: "Well, if you change your mind - we're celebrating."
Chakotay: "What's the occasion?"
Janeway: "I've decided to move in with Jaffen."
Chakotay realises this makes things more complicated as regards restoring Janeway to Voyager, and he is also concerned because he is a very close friend to Captain Janeway. "Congratulations."

A Quarren officer enters Umali's bar accompanied by a security guard and introduces himself to Paris: "Yerid, Criminal Investigations."
Chakotay overhears the conversation.
Paris: "We run an honest business."
Yerid: "I'm looking for two people who disappeared after leaving here earlier this evening. One was a young pregnant woman-"
Paris: "B'Elanna?"
Yerid: "You know her?"
Paris: "I knew I should've walked her to the transport."
Yerid: "Why, did you think someone might try to hurt her?"
Paris: "The city is supposed to be safe!"
Yerid: "The person with her was described as being short, with mottled skin, facial hair."
Paris: "Sounds like someone who was in here earlier, a worker from the plant."
Yerid: "Do you know his name?"
Paris: "Er....Neelix, I think."
Yerid: "Did you see him talking to anyone else while he was here?"
Paris: "He had a friend, Amal something."
Yerid: "Can you describe him?"
Paris: "I don't have to." He turns to point. "He's sitting right over-"

But when they look at the table where Chakotay was sitting, they find he has gone.

Doctor: "ECH log, stardate 54622.4. I've found an ingenious place to hide while we make repairs: a moon with a paramagnetic core that masks our energy signature. I've turned my attention to Lieutenant Torres, whose treatment will also require ingenuity."

The Doctor shows Neelix two scans on a Sickbay monitor: "The scan on the left was performed during B'Elanna's last physical, the one on the right just a few minutes ago. The memory centres of her brain have been radically altered."
Neelix: "People from our crew seem to remember parts of their real lives, but they got a lot of the details wrong: Tom knew his name, that he was from Earth, but he said space travel made him sick."
Doctor: "Whoever did this is very sophisticated, capable of selectively manipulating memory engrams. Some have been suppressed, some altered, others left intact."

Neelix: "Can you undo the damage?"
Doctor: "I believe so, but it'll take some time."
Neelix: "I wish I could help."

Doctor: "Maybe you can. She requires several treatments. Inbetween, you could expose her to familiar sights and surroundings."
Neelix: "Say no more. I'll take her on a whirlwind tour of her own life."
Doctor: "Don't rush things. This is going to be very traumatic for her."

The Quarren capital city.

In the Quarren medical facility, Dr Kadan is discussing Tuvok's case with an assistant, Dr Ravoc.
Ravoc: "Acute anxiety, depression. When I interviewed him, he insisted that he's not who he's supposed to be, that we've stolen his katra, whatever that is."
Kadan: "Conclusions?"
Ravoc: "Trilobe regression complex? Polar effective disorder?"
Kadan: "Neuro-psychiatry isn't a guessing game, Dr Ravoc."
Ravoc: "Dysphoria syndrome."

Kadan: "You have been studying my research."
Ravoc: "According to your work, the condition is very rare."
Kadan: "It is. I treated this man before. Apparently he's suffered a relapse. Recommended treatment?"
Ravoc: "Engrammatic resequencing is typically indicated."
Kadan: "You seem sceptical."
Ravoc: "Resequencing is a radical procedure."

Kadan: "If he had a malignant tumour would you be afraid to cut it out?"
Ravoc: "No."
Kadan: "This syndrome is just as insidious. It requires aggressive treatment. Get started."

Tuvok: "Please, help me."
Ravoc: "That's what we're here to do."
